Wow! Arden! I realized that fear of the coloratura register was the reason I couldn't sing freely up there. You are a brilliant teacher! I just accessed those notes with an open throat! For the first time, I trusted that the breath support would be there, and it was! Thank you so much, again!

Thanks Tony! So how would you answer the question I pose? Do you notice if fear gets in the way of your singing technique at times? How would you sing if you weren't afraid? Thanks for joining the conversation!

      Hi Arden,
I've become a fan of yours by just watching a few of your videos, I agree fear does get in the way, it leads to nervousness, and you become unsure of yourself, I'm also a singer and pianist, doing standards, jazz and some pop music, but i work at improvising a lot, and it's very scary at times because i sometimes dont know where i'm going, it usually works out, and ends up in a good place, but i do understand how fear can affect you.
Heres a clip of my singing and playing, its an old clip, but its me :)

Glad to be part of the conversation, keep up the good work, i enjoy your videos and advice
      Tony :)

Tony you have a wonderful, rich voice! If you're interested in being part of a supportive community of singers all on this journey of finding their most powerful voices together, come over to my website and add your email to subscribe to my virtual studio. I send a bi-weekly email with either a technical tool, a mindful exercise, sometimes a video like this all to help singers get out of their head and get back in to trusting their body and their technique. Hope to see you there! www.ArdenKaywinVocalStudio.com

I agree with the tip you presented in answering this question! I was blocked in my singing, but then after I started recording my lessons and realized I lack confidence due to fear...I started having more confidence and became less fearful of those high notes (O mio babbino caro)!

Hi Felisha. Yes! Recording your lessons is SUCH a great tool. Were you able to identify what kind of fear reaction you were having and the way it was effecting your singing? (If you're not sure what I mean by the "kind" of fear reaction, I explain in this blog post: www.ardenkaywinvocalstudio.com/the-1-thing-you-can-do-to-make-the-hard-part-of-a-song-easier/)

      Hi Arden!
I think it's as you said here "we play defense and pull back to lessen the impact of what we perceive as bad". I get defensive and scared I can't hit the high note (even though I can..) and pull back. In doing so, my body also somewhat tenses up and actually causes me to not hit the note at all!

Exactly! The very thing you are doing to protect yourself from the fear actually causes the thing you fear to happen. Such good awareness! And that's half the battle. Singing is so much more a mental game then most singers realize! Would you mind posting what you said here on my blog too? I think it would be helpful for singers to understand your perspective on how it feels to have the defensive fear reaction (since in the video Lilian has the opposite fear reaction). Thank you for sharing your experience :)
