Leatherman mult-tools are still made in the USA and are great. I carry a Leatherman Micra everyday along with a Chinese made small Workpro utility knife.

Well said, sadly American manufacturing is not what it used to be. The country got upset when a Japanese politician called us lazy and fat back in the early 90’s. But on a generalisation, he was correct. Yes there are craftsmen out there who care about their work, but they are few compared to the masses that just want a pay check. The trades have become desperate not for just skilled labour but for people who even have an interest in doing them. Unions and labour laws that were originally designed to protect the work now promote laziness. As another subscriber mentioned, people need to demand better, not just from producers, but from people.

everything i seen made in america has been overpriced, inferior materials and in alot of cases very poorly assembled, pinched wires, loose fasteners, stripped fasteners so on so forth, american workers really dont care about some little widget they have to assemble 100 of a day.. everything ive had that was made in taiwan specifically has really impressed me.. when you get up into industrial tools, hydaulics ect im sure it changes and starts to lean back in the US mades direction as machinists, and specialty workers do care about their work and generally speaking or much better trained and equipped compared to the same worker in china
a side note, made in germany still seems to be a valid stamp for high quality consumer tools, knipex, fein, metabo, wiha, wera, ect im sure they offer made in china stuff but in general youre not overpaying for junk just because it has a made in germany/czech stamp youre actually getting good engineering, good materials, good ideas.. i think thats where some of the problem is, people arent asking how can they make a great high quality tool the best in its category, theyre just asking how can we take this crappy tool an produce it in the USA and theyre solution is usually to skimp on as much as possible to cover the extra cost of labour

You're right, we're losing it. Years ago I wouldn't think of going into a Harbor Freight, junk, junk, junk. Today's a different story. Much improved better junk. I shouldn't say "junk", now I say stuff and there is some decent "stuff". The other day I bought a mower lift from HF 99.99 -74.99 w/ coup. HD 135.09 Northern Tool 539.99, there wasn't too much difference other than price, a no brainer. After putting together and using it I patted myself on my back. Just saying.

It's not that companies are selling out because they are greedy. I could get a lot of arguments on this statement but it's the workers in the US that are greedy. I mean look we have put forth health insurance and what not for someone who works in a factory producing a product that is worth one dollar be worth the same as someone who is making something for one thousand dollars. The companies need to make their money. If you don't like what a company is doing, it might sound mean but why don't you go out and create a company with your ideals here in the USA. Because, if you didn't realize it, here we are able to do more like get loans for anything. Don't hate companies for doing what they are doing. You are the consumer. Just buy the tools you know are best. Don't buy tools based on name brand in this day and age because they are only trying to keep you buying their brand. If you look closely some brands even have different tiers for that same reason.

The companies are greedy by going offshore to increase profit margins. Tell me how many of these companies that moved production to China are selling their vacation homes? They aren’t because their pockets are deep.

Great video. I have a perspective where I try to buy made in America because I used to work for Stanley black and decker for 20 years before outsourcing changed that. I work in industrial maintenance for a large Us company now and use a variety of brand tools. Craftsman, dewalt, Stanley, kolbalt, Pittsburg, gearwrench, lang, crecent, and many more. I find some tools like crecent made in US or even ten year or older craftsman great and high quality. But new craftsman and most of the stanley subsidiary stuff even when made in US are junk. A Pittsburg impact socket is 1000 times better quality than a current craftsman. Also I find Kolbalt lowes brand surviving the industrial beatdown better than most any of the brands I use. Made in America is not mean the best any more but I still like hunting down the good made in US tools but dont lock my self into them. Long story short it would be great to see you guys review some now US tools as well. Harbor frieght has some that beatdown alot of brands out there.

Hey, I am glad to watch your video. I am from China and travel to USA for work several times in years. In my opinion, American has too much predudice for China, this is come from American knows less about China. Lets talk about the tools, now the 90% hand tools in Homedeop, Lowes, Menards, Walwart, Harbor fright etc..are made in China really, even Milwaukee, Stanley. China is not only prodcing the poor quality products, it depends on the customers requirement, by honest, China producing all level products...We know now the US had added the imported tariff from China, it is really a big punch for China supplier, but it is also really a big hurt for US customers, the retail price was increased in market. The made in US brand products are gets the benefit, but for us, it is really don't have any influence, nothing going to change. But I have to see, I am admire some US made products, like Klein, Gerber. They are innovation.

  • @davidwong8393
    @davidwong8393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem with the US market everybody is looking for cheap products MIC. Only a niche consumers is looking for really Made in USA. My view would be purchase a tool a little bit more expensive Made in USA and can stand for several years of use instead of cheap products in which at the end would be useless in the long run and create garbage in the country. The market is used to buying cheap, useless and garbage. This n is not a wise consume behavior.

  • @Perspectologist

I appreciate your perspective on this. I’m just a hobbyist. I don’t focus too much on a tool, but what I can do with that tool. I consider the value/capability proposition. I would like to support American manufacturing, but I find it hard to justify a big price premium, especially if the quality and support isn’t much better. Affordable foreign made tools can actually empower American makers, builders and workers to be more productive and cost-effective.
Cheaper foreign labor is a factor, but I also think that in some cases more lax intellectual property protections come in to play. That can allow more foreign competition to drive down prices. Certainly there are ethical and quality concerns about this. It can be hard to know what one is actually getting.
In 10-20 years we will see a continued big rise in automation. We may have more American manufacturing, but we will be supporting American robots more than American workers. This will be a huge issue we will have to tackle as a society and it will extend beyond geo-political boundaries.

Personally, I never did care for the Gerber multitools so perhaps I'm bias like that. Leatherman was always what I thought of for a multitools. I have owned both and everything else equal, I feel Leatherman is better.
Cheap "Made in the America" tools are going to be the norm. It's about cost vs profit margins. I don't mind manufacturers sourcing and using global components because that is just how it is because the US doesn't have the producers like it did. The producers it does have, there is a price markup for American labor and CEOs rediculus salaries and bonuses, so those goods are at a premium price.

This video reminds me of buying a car in the mid-late 1970s. In the early 1970s, 98% of the cars sold in the US were 'Merican made, and very few made it to 100,000.
Imports arrived and gave consumers a better product. Why? They held their workers to better accountability from the top down.
America needs to hold their workers to a superior standard than what is produced from other countries.
If we don't step up, Made in America will be mostly a slogan.

We need to ask for things made here and if they don’t have it demand USA made products. It will take years to get it turned around but, it has to start somewhere and sometime, why not now?
