  • Don Allphin and two of his sons, Chris Allphin and Mark Allphin, catch incredible lake trout in a short, 2.5-hour trip on Yellowstone Lake. Don, once again shows how he casts and retrieves after hooking a fish while trolling. All three Allphins master the cast and retrieve technique and catch 21 lake trout and at least a dozen cutthroats while experiencing the remnants of the massive 2022 flood. They found themselves in large expanses of floating debris including pollen from trees, grasses, flowers and who knows what else. Don and his sons use Kamloopers in Orange and Gold, Yellow with red dots and Jake's Spiin-A-Lures in the 3/4-ounce version to target post spawn cutthroats and fat healthy lake trout. The group caught more lake trout on this particular trip than they ever have on a single outing on the lake.

Just came upon your video. Nice. My son was fishing(?) on Yellowstone Lake that summer. They would haul in over one ton of lake trout per day per boat (4 boats). Remember that the lake trout in Yellowstone Lake are an invasive species but are good to eat. Glad you had a great day.

I spoke to one of those fishermen that told me my 24-pound lake trout was the largest they had seen in a long time.

To Mark & Chris; There will come a day when you won't go fishing and not think about your dad and wish he was there with you.
I'm 71 now.. and my dad loved fishing as much as your dad and he took me fishing every chance he could. Those are some great memories. I always said that dear old dad would fish in the neighbors bathtub if he thought he could catch a fish. Haha.
Your dad was genuinely happy out fishing but his deepest joy was sharing it with his sons.
Take care fellas. Good luck fishing and God bless ya!
    Mike

Mike, It sounds like you knew my dad. Did you? Yes, dad loved to take his five boys fishing. And, Yellowstone was always top on the list for where to go. He also taught his daughters to fish, but most of that ended when they married non-fishing husbands. Thankfully, at present, my boys, Don Jr., Chris and Mark still love to fish with me and we do it several times a year. I will share your comments with them so they don't forget to ask me to take them and their kids more often. Thanks again for your comment.

    Hi Don:
I thought you did a great job of describing fishing for lakers in Yellowstone Lake. Actually, I live in Cody, WY. A friend and I want to go and see if we can remove a bunch of them to help the cutts plus she likes eating lakers and rookies over all other trout. Do you have a particular area of the lake you could recommend (no need for specifics) and a preferred time to go for them? Since you fished out of Bridge Bay I expect that West Thumb is not a preferred area.
Did you pinch the hook barbs down with pliers or file them off?

Those lakers are really tasty when they come right out of the lake and into a pan with butter. 😋

They do indeed. We LOVE to eat lake trout while in the park.

We are heading to Yellowstone lake for the first time, any suggestions on where we start for lake trout?

I was just there for the past two weeks. The lake trout are in a little deeper water than the last couple of years. We found lake trout on the outside edges of Mary Bay, Steamboat Point, and Stevenson Island. We used Jake's spin-a-lures in gold with red dots and found the fish between 12 and 30 feet. There are so many places to try on Yellowstone Lake, just start on points and then just explore. It is a fantastic destination. Good Luck!!

It's pretty nice that they're invasive there. If the fishings good you won't have to stop because there is no limit to how many you can take.

That's a great point. And, what's more, there are so many areas of the lake that very few people fish, that if you find one that hold a bunch of lake trout, you could quite literally catch them all day long and put scores of them in your boat. However, the park service has been paying (for 20 years now) a professional netting crew to take nearly 500,000 lake trout out of the lake annually. So, if YOU find a good spot, and let people know about it, the netters will be all over the area within a few days. That's why we go up for a week or two, catch our fish, have the time of our lives, and simply go home and not worry about what is happening until the next year. Maybe next year, we won't find the lake trout and will just catch and release some great Yellowstone Cutthroat. Not a bad trade off in my view. Thanks for the comment.
