Before attempting Borah last week, I watched literally every TH-cam video there is on the topic. The hike was BRUTAL for a 50+ guy but I summited! I can say, with absolute certainty, that this is the definitive video everyone who wants to attempt this hike needs to watch. The discussion about the 3 distinct phases of this climb is 100% accurate. One additional tip: After Chickenout, there is a brief stretch of flat trail before the final push. The final ascent is by far the steepest phase of the trail. I dropped my pack at this point and took a little food and water only, and it made that last stretch much easier.
Wow, thank you so much! I can't wait to show my wife all your kind words. Props off to you for summiting btw. This was such a hot year, I can't imagine doing it this year. That feeling of being on top of Idaho sure is hard to beat. Now that Borah has be tackled, what's next?
Great climb, great couple I saw the mountain from distance on my road trip last July Started in Michigan and ending in Oregon It's definitely on my list of climbing. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Okay, I was with you all the way until that ridge! 20 years ago I would have had no problem climbing that, but watching it now literally made me shake! Wow, kudos to you two, impressive!
This is the first video I've watched from you, and I am impressed. I have been eye-balling Mt Borah for sometime now and really want to do it. "Freakin Steep" is an understatement according to the video, but that doesn't scare me ;) Chicken Out Ridge sure lives up to its name and I will take your advice to take it slow. Giving me the motivation to FINALLY add this to my 2024 365 mile hiking challenge list, and to join the club. Looking forward to watching additional videos you'll have done. May the road rise to meet you.
Why thank you! I'm excited that you're going to give it a try next year. I think you'll great. We always start super early in the morning to give us ample time. And of course, hydration is always important. I made another video about Borah where we camped on top of the mountain. I was able to capture so beautiful footage. If you like this video, you definitely will like that one. Have a wonderful 2024
wow this is a great video, I was considering trying the climb next weekend, I think I'm gonna have to wait til next year lol. but I truly enjoyed your video. thank you for sharing your adventure, and for the tips about the climb.
Wow! I think you are cray cray! But I love seeing the beauty of our wonderful state through your lens! Thank you! Now test, eat and hydrate! I loved that tree with multi color trunk, what type of tree is it?
That is some intense stuff! Chicken Out Ridge looks like a crazy adrenaline blast! I cant imagine what happens when you meet someone coming from the other direction! That was a hell of a hike, and you had to film it all too! Great job guys! The stuff you are doing on a constant basis is unreal!
Awesome videos guys. I hope y’all get a bunch more views because I love the content. Just got back from the Bighorn Crags and I rewatched your videos there to relive all the places.
Great video - thank you! Is there a lot of route-finding on the way up? Some parts of the video looked like pure scrambling - no trail. Did you use a GPS tool for route-finding or did you wing it? Thanks so much!
Have you been up Mt. Breitenback or Leatherman peak a few miles to the southeast of borah? That area looks soooo pretty on google earth- the geology from about 10,000 feet- gorgeous and weird.
Oh my god you guys! My knees were shaking watching you go across chicken out ridge. You two really impress us. Richard and I decided you will NEVER catch us up there. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Night sky was beautiful, by the way.
Hey frank I'm looking to climb Borah after I get through this next surgery on my feet... any advice or tips for training?? And I'm curious can you camp at the Summit overnight or no? That would be cool.. I've been to the campground, just not the summit ...YET... I'm in Jerome and thinking about using the canyon here as training + the gym haha
If you have access to a gym, LOTS of the stair climber/master is really helpful. Covering lots of miles on a trail is great too. Make sure your hiking shoe have great support because standing on rock all day will wear your feet out. Get a early start to the hike. Some people start as early as 4am to you avoid the afternoon heat. Stay hydrated of course. My goal next year is to camp at the summit. I think that will be a totally wild ride. I've heard of people camping before chicken out ridge. Keep me posted on how you do! Thanks for watching
Thank you! It took us 6 hours to get to the top. We took our time and filming definitely adds to that. For the way down, we did it in about 3ish hours. The afternoon was hot so we were in a hurry. Thank you for watching.
Thanks dude! Definitely start as early as you can, bring lots of water and snacks, and take your time. It's a long day to be out under the sun. Enjoy every moment of it because it's a wild time
@@FinneysOutdoorAdventure oh I plan on it! Not sure if I want to lug up my dslr on that treck though. You snowshoe? I saw your hell roaring lake vid... That is a fantastic overnight snowshoe excursion.
My wife and I always talk about getting a pair of snowshoes but we never get around to doing it. I really want to add winter backpacking. How cold did it get up there for your snowshoe trip?

Thank you for doing a hiking video that was about the hike and not the climbers personalities. I'll watch more by you two!
Why thank you. I appreciate the feedback
Susie: talking about mental toughness
Frank: "trail mix is so good"
haha! I went back and re watched that part... Too true

I agree. I've watched a lot of Borah vids and the camera work was great in this video.
@@jbcrunchy why thank you!
Wow on 228 likes??? That's not a enough! Huge accomplishment guys! I don't know you but I'm proud of both of you! I finished scotchmans this weekend.
Why thank you! What's funny is that I've never climbing Scotchmanns and I grew up in North Idaho! I need to put it on the list.
Watched a ton of climbing Borah videos. This one is the best. Great camera work and super informative. Thank you.
Thank you Aaron. I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
Love all your videos, clear easy to understand, fun and informative

@@FinneysOutdoorAdventure I feel inspired to make the climb someday.
Holy cow guys!! Fricken good job on the hike lol. My legs got soar watching!! Looks beautiful!! Loved it

Sweet video! This is on my short list, Idaho is so beautiful!
Thank you! Hopefully you get to climb it next year.
Great video! Amazing that she can nap while she hikes. I have a friend who can do that and I wish I could. I'm hiking Borah in a couple of weeks!

this is a great borah video. it gives a true perspective on the hike
why thank you!
Ok that was terrifying and fantastic to watch. Great job! Love the night sky photos you took as well. Superb.

The official trail ends at chicken out ridge. However, you can find the trail relatively easily. It's a hard day but will worth the payoff at the top
That was a great day to touch with amazing natures outdoor .
Yes it was. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great video. Very helpful.
Thanks Ken!

Great share enjoyed watching stay connected friend
Thank you friend
I describe that hike as a slow murder. You guys are going into White Cloud!? Can’t wait to see that video. 🤙🏻
I may need to barrow that term from you my friend
Whoa Frank, those pics tho! Awesome!
Thank you!
Hi Mrs. Finney it's a student from your class aka Dodson I just want you to now that I still watch your channel
Thank you Dodson!! I miss ya kid!
What day and month did you do this? Awesome video, thanks for all the info by the way :)
And how much water did you guys take?
This video was at the end of July. We each packed over half a gallon each. July can be very hot.
How gorgeous is that?! ♡ Too tough for me.
awesome video!
Thank you!
Awesome hike! How was the downclimb of Chicken-out ridge compared to the upclimb?
Thank you! It wasn't as bad but it was getting pretty hot by then and we were starting to get tired as well. Going down, it's easier to see the path.

Great video on Borah. Summited 2004
Thank you!
Nice video and congrats on the climb. Was that all filmed with a GoPro? I saw a Hero 7 black on there. Just curious, thanks.
Thank you! Yes, we used the hero 7 along with a nikon z6. I've gotten a lot of use out of those gopro 7's
How much water did you take?
We each packed 3 (24 ounce) water bottles. It wasn't enough on that day
How many hours round trip?
6 hours to the top
1 hour hang out
3 hours down
What time of year is the video from?
This was in mid July
Thanks!
How was going down? Harder than going up?
The down is harder on the joints but it takes half the time from going up
Its a spine. I followed the train and ended up on the left side terrified. walked the spine back and it was very easy.
Bro mad respect have any tips for someone wanting to climb Bora
