Country Between USA & Canada 🇺🇸🇨🇦

- Transcript: Many Americans don’t know there used to be a country between the United States and Canada.
So how did it exist in the first place, and what happened?
Well, after the Treaty of Paris of 1783, the border between the US and British North America was defined, and it included a portion of the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River.
Both countries had different views on where the borders should have been. British North America asserted one interpretation, while the US claimed another. Both countries tried to administer the disputed area, but the residents grew tired of being taxed by both countries and declared their independence.
On July 9, 1832, the Republic of Indian Stream was formed. The US eventually recognized the republic, while British North America did not and continued to tax them.
Because of this, the Republic of Indian Stream requested to join the US.
So, in 1835, the New Hampshire militia occupied the area without any resistance from British North America, and it was subsequently incorporated into the state of New Hampshire, becoming part of the US.

I live in New hampshire, and let me tell you that area is woods, woods and woods. I'm surprised there were residents to tax in the first place.
You can never escape the woods, the trees are everywhere!

Canada would tax anything, even the trees.
That’s actually genius to give up taxing it and let them be mad at one place and not the other
It really was clever, and as a bonus, it fits into the US historical issue of independence from a larger state.
When you think about it, it's also a good way to deal with women when they're mad or shit, just ignore them and do your own thing and they'll join back with you eventually
Man I really hate being taxed squared
Made me laugh. But it’s more like taxes + taxes. squared means taxes x taxes

It should also be noted that this was a very common occurrence across the border between the United States and British Canada. Not the whole independent Nation part but the border disputes, One even almost caused a full-out war over a landmass no greater than A small island. We often forget that our greatest allies used to be our worst enemies, And our worst enemies used to be our greatest allies.
Well, yeah. It's only natural for consolidationist states to run into frequent problems, especially when a region is sparsely populated or difficult terrain. Im pretty sure Vermont used to be a country between the USA and Canada for a short period of time as thanks to dispute between New York and New Hampshire over the area which caused them to fight for independence separate from both the USA and England. After a short bout of independence, Vermont agreed to join the USA as the 14th state.
Wow, I didn’t know about this country. Thanks! 🙂

Pretty cool story honestly!
Oh yeah, I remember when this happened. Jackson just accepted it and everyone mainly people who lived in New Hampshire like me didn’t so when they wanted to join the us jackson was like ok, lowkey he was super nonchalant that was the same year the first ever assassination attempt on him and the Texas revolution. When I arrived in America on the Susan Constant I was amazed, but honestly the 2000’s have been a real let down I mean sure technically we’re pretty good but I miss the days when it was just a few hundred people trying to survive and studying the flora and fauna. I discovered the bald eagle (I wanted to call it the white headed falcon but Lewis convinced me to change it) but of course I went by Carl back in the 1700’s
Ah yes, the famous Lewis and Carl
@@eophsiajones4428 your thinking of Clark, real dick didn’t like him. I’m or was Carl Linnaeus but had to change my name and move so people wouldn’t suspect my age
Went up to hike in that area this summer, while in Pittsburg (the only town there of about 800), they had a surprisingly robust outdoor memorial to Indian Stream. Had a pre-recorded message playing about the history of the country and everything. Glad to see that the locals still take pride in the nation.
I'm British and greed is a common trait among our elite. Poor people never prospered from the empire.

Wow I’m a pretty big history nerd and I’ve never heard of this before. Thanks for some new knowledge! 🧐👍🏼
You gave me some interesting knowledge. Thank you for sharing this.
Taxing another country is wild 😂
Americans also don't know that before the gold rush, a lot of the territory of the west belonged to Mexico until the US negotiated for the land.
We definitely know this it isn't new news I learned this in highschool.
Lmao, big brain move on the US part
Hey, that's my birthday! Woo
So THIS is where Trevor Phillips was originally from!
Wow, I actually didn't know that this time. Interesting.
That’s just genius
Vermont was also a seperate country for a while.
America:we’re ready to invade
Canada:please I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to do that😢😭😭😭😭 May I please have another chance
Great Britain, not Canada!
That was still Britain at this time. And Britain likely gave it up due to it being completely insignificant compared to the 1/3 of the world they had by the neck
Very cool, had no idea
There is a US island in the Niagara Fiver (on the US/Canada border) called Grand Island. For a very short period of time it also declared its independence.
The residents: we want independence!
Usa: *wipes tear* they grow up so fast
U.S.A. : Please adopt parts of Canada (at least where I live)

Why don’t us take a bit more land today in the same way? What stands in their way? Just don’t say they friends because countries have no friends, countries are land hungry always especially the powerful ones

"We dont want to he taxed, can we join the USA?"
Joins the state with one of the highest property tax rate in the country
The US was being taxed more then BNA was at this point in history
This is entirely new to me. In all my study of American history I never heard of this. But that's OK. You should never stop learning till you're dead.

Dang good video
This was not an uncommon issue with old time borders, where you'd write down a reference to the end of some river but later on upon better mapping you'd find that it was not as neat a point as expected or where you had assumed it to be.
they slipped that one by me, I like to think I have a good knowledge of US Canadian history but I didn’t know about this.
Newfoundland: Am I a joke to you?!
I thought you were going to talk about the Vermont Republic
When they already knew how tax cost them to lose a lot of money and territory the Brits still failed to learn from their own mistakes.
well also Vermont used to be a country that was in between Canada and the 13 colonies then the United States I think
Canada trying to tax you for something? Yea thats canada alright
I live in New Hampshire, well south new Hampshire
I feel like many Canadians didn't know this either!
I have a thing i have been wondering. What if the usa went to war over the republic of indian strean in the 1835 when the us tried to make moves in the region i think it as an interesting idea as it happens a bit after 1812 and a decade before the Mexican-American war.
don’t forget about like vermont, it used to be independent for a few years
Uh. Kinda creepy algorithm YT considering I'm literally 5 minutes of walking away.
Well how about that, still fairly local, but used to be a stones throw too.
Was not expecting this many people to show up here.
"If we're gonna be taxed by foreigners, we're picking the foreigners that promised to only tax us if we asked them to." -the Republic of Indian River
Also the independent republic of Vermont existed at this time. Vermont only joined the union in 1791 as the 14th state, the first to join that did not sign the declaration
"We're tired of being taxed, can you invade us so we can pay your taxes again?"
Makes sense.
there also used to be a country at the modern-day three-country point between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Its existence meant a four-country point existed where there's currently a three-country point. Could you cover that?
I'll, uh, subscibe if you cover it
Wasn’t Vermont its own country before joining the USA?
That would be cool if it stayed a country
No it wouldn’t be cool unless they chose a cooler name
America : fights for independence because of 1 empire over taxing them
**ROIS or RIS casually declares independence without any harm**
i think
Squabbling over land that actually belonged to none of them except for the natives.
NH really said “they will not be taxed”
😂 What a friendly argument between our countries lol. God, I love my American Neighbours lol 😅
It's not north of the Connecticut river. That river starts in First Lake which is located in Pittsburgh, NH. That's what it's called now
The human urge to not pay taxes is strong, and is the reason many people today are so unhappy.
My first guess was that it would be the Republic of Vermont, which was briefly independent before joining the United States.
Do we just lose every land dispute with America?
Something similar happened with the San Juan islands where British-North America wanted the islands and the US wanted them, the dispute lasted all the way through Civil War where it was decided by a third party, Germany, who would get the islands through a presentation. We got them in the end
Canada was like ‘bro its not that deep’
Fun fact: there still is, its france with the st pierre and miquelon islands
The border was set on the river, but over the years the river shifted. Meanwhile the border line remained the same. So now you have people on the Canadian side of the river with land technically in the US, and vice-versa.
