I already thought Steely Dan was great, but when I heard this song, my mind was blown to new heights of respect and admiration. Still one of my very favorite Dan songs. Another masterpiece on this album is “Any Major Dude.”
Been waiting awhile for you guys to do this one. Funky as it gets is right. The late, great, Jeff Porcaro on drums. He elevated every track he played on and he played on lots. Also Skunk Baxter on lead guitar, incredible.
When I was a kid in the 70's, we used to quote that line all the time. We were living in a little bit of a safer area but the idea was, if the cops chased us out of somewhere, DON'T GO BACK! The second time they might not be so nice.
Night by Night is my favorite SD. Yet, you'll never hear it on the radio. Parkers Band is another gem. I'll play Pretzel Logic & Royal Scam till the day I die.
Ah finally! The one I've been waiting for! One of my favorite tracks.. glad you enjoyed it as well. Also we see you boys with your new podmics, better cam, fresh jerseys and hats! Keep improving and keep making content.. Happy to see your hard work translate into success!
Bought Pretzel Logic on a lark and was very pleasantly surprised by the song. Harmonies so tight, it is impossible to tell which instrument is which. The guitar work is stellar.
You guys know Jeff Porcaro as the drummer from Boz Skaggs "Lowdown" , Michael MacDonald's "I Keep Forgettin"" and drummer and founding member of "Toto".
I loved your reactions, guys! This is the first track that let me know how bad a groove Steely Dan could lay down!!! It's been among my many SD favorites from the first time I heard it! As you felt, too, this one was shades of Steely Dan to come!
Hey fellas. This song is why I will always be a fan of the Album Concept, that is buy an artist's album and then discover songs that you like even more than the hit. This was one of those songs for me. So glad you reacted to this one, it brings back great memories for me. Peace
Sweet! I’ve been waiting for y’all to do this song. The drummer on this song was a 19 year old Jeff Porcaro. To me, I can hear a lot of the roots of R&B in that drum groove, especially that solo in the middle.
Is there any bad Steely Dan song? I think not. They are fire. This is the music they'd play in mall music shops back in the day. All the high-end music lovers dug SD. I dig the fact that you young bucks like SD.
Once again a great reaction to a great tune. I was in high school when this record dropped. It was a mind expanding experience the first time I played it. They actually cover a legendary Duke Ellington song, "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo". It would be cool to get to see you do like a back-to-back reaction of one of Duke's versions and the Steely Dan cover. IDIC🖖 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
I just love the expressions on your faces when SD go beyond. That's exactly how I reacted back in the 70s. Love listening to you guys all the way from Sydney Aust.
Damn, I really miss the 70's! So many memories and good times as a kid growing up! Thanks, La and Che for letting me groove with you for a moment! Peace, Love & Blessings my Brothers!!!
Thank you guys!! I was so happy to see you were going to react to this song, one of my all-time favourites, in any genre. I first heard this song, I'm sure it was a cover, in Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada in 1977 when I was 19. Maybe I was 18 and it was 1976. Not sure. Anyways, this was the song and I was enthralled because I'd never heard something so groovy or funky before. It's the only thing I remember that night and you can take that any way you want to. Lol So, as these weird and synchronistic events go, here I am in 2023, almost 50 years later, watching you two just get hooked. I understand why. As usual, you've given me another gem of a reaction. Keep it coming!! Peace.
One of my favorites from this album. Not widely played but an excellent tune…very funky! Early in the Dan evolution, it fits seamlessly in the album that started it all for me back in 1974! Your reaction was spot on as usual, thanks guys for spinning it!
The coolest band in the universe. Y'all have listened to them enough by now to know that. PBS had a concert special of them many years ago. It's still available I think. You would really enjoy it. My kids watched it with me when they were around 14yo. They became instant Steely Dan fans.
One of my very favorite SD tunes- it hooked me the first time I heard it! Fun to see new fans discovering the incredibleness of my favorite band! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
I heard this gem of a song on the 2000 tour, incredible energy early in the concert! I was in the first 3 rows. What a rush!! Great reaction guys. This is one of those underrated gems 💎.
I feel so blessed that I was around when these records were dropping. And it's shocking that so many didn't get it at the time. Great to see you guys discovering and appreciating this fantastic music.
The rhythm section is deadly. The deep pocket drums and that funky chopping guitar lets Becker's bass weave with the melody while still supporting the groove. These guys are on a level that eclipses "popular music". Night By Night is my bitter angel on my left shoulder.
THIS IS THE START OF THEIR ESSENCE. HORNS, SYCAPATION. LOVE ALL THEIR STUFF BUT THIS SONG WAS THE ONE THAT HOOKED ME. . NOT AS AIRY AS SOME OF THE EARLIER TUNES. TIGHT. GREAT SONGS THAT WERE MORE COUNTRYISH. THIS WAS WHERE IT CAME TOGETHER. AND I LOVE EM. I LISTEN TO THEM EVERYDAY. GREATEST BAND EVER FOR ME.
Quite possibly the best song on this album. You guys are lucky, there are a dozen or more SD songs as great as this one. Deep, deep catalog. I’m having fun watching you discover them.
For me "Steely Dan" never gets old.....been listening to them for 48 yrs.
The funk is real
Steely Dan rules. That’s it.
I already thought Steely Dan was great, but when I heard this song, my mind was blown to new heights of respect and admiration. Still one of my very favorite Dan songs. Another masterpiece on this album is “Any Major Dude.”
Yes...and this was a deep track!
That guitar solo is worth the price of admission!
Your favorite Steely Dan track will forever and always be, the one you just listened to…❤
hAHAHAHAHA BRILLIANT.
Perfect! I never knew how to put into words the way I feel when listening to the Dan.
What can you say, its the Dan man!!
Been waiting awhile for you guys to do this one.
Funky as it gets is right.
The late, great, Jeff Porcaro on drums.
He elevated every track he played on and he played on lots.
Also Skunk Baxter on lead guitar, incredible.
Porcaro was also only 19 years old when he cut this track. Amazing.
@@andrewtrotter9023
I didn’t realize Jeff passed ……… 😮
And Skunk is phenomenal !!!!!!
This is my all time favorite Steely song and while their songs have very personal meanings for me, this one hit the nail on the head when I was young.
Donald Fagen: lead vocals
Walter Becker: bass
Jeff Baxter: lead guitar
Dean Parks: rhythm guitar
Denny Dias: guitar
David Paich: clavinet
Jeff Porcaro: drums
Plas Johnson: sax
Jerome Richardson: sax
Ernie Watts: sax
Lew McCreary: trombone
Ollie Mitchell: trumpet
Timothy Schmit: Backing vocals
Two things: This song should've been a top ten hit AND the theme tune to a great TV Cop Show at the time.
Another very funk/jazz groovy, catchy fusion song from the great Becker & Fagan with their crew of studio pros. They never miss.
Top 5 Steely Dan song for me. Fan for 45 years. This song is often overlooked and underrated. Baxter’s guitar solo is filthy.
"When the dawn patrol got to tell you twice
they gon' do it with a shotgun"
Always sends a chill. I been to places like that.
Amen! Feel you I knew those kind of folks as well
When I was a kid in the 70's, we used to quote that line all the time. We were living in a little bit of a safer area but the idea was, if the cops chased us out of somewhere, DON'T GO BACK! The second time they might not be so nice.
Alluding to the pre dawn raid drug busts.
So I’m trading in this ten cent life for another one really puts u in the mindset
What does the Dan do when they find a Next Level groove ?
...Just go to the Next-Next level , gentlemen .
This vibe is Exhibit #A .
That sounds like it could be a song for a TV drama series in the 70s. Great funky beat.
Yup, exotic cars and even more exotic weapons, unstructured linen suits and shear sheath dresses, aboard yachts in a tropical harbor awash in cocaine
@@dogstar7 Just lets you're imagination run wild.
Oh, that was the 80's Miami Vice
@@dogstar7Yep, exactly that kind of show ❤; great comment!
Night by Night is my favorite SD. Yet, you'll never hear it on the radio. Parkers Band is another gem. I'll play Pretzel Logic & Royal Scam till the day I die.
Yes!! Thank you so much! This made my day and it’s only 9am.
David Crosby said in an interview "If you put on a Steely Dan record, if HAVE TO listen to all the tracks...."
These guys were the masters of the groove thang!
Been waiting for this one....!
"Any Major Dude Will Tell You" This is a jam...!
I don't really have any comment except that the genius just plays for itself. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
One great song after another - that's Steely Dan
That whole album is absurdly good.
Lots of miles cruising to this song and all the other great songs on this album! 😎🎸🎹
8 track greatness in you duece and a quarter drop top 🥃🥃🥃😉✌️
Ah finally! The one I've been waiting for! One of my favorite tracks.. glad you enjoyed it as well. Also we see you boys with your new podmics, better cam, fresh jerseys and hats! Keep improving and keep making content.. Happy to see your hard work translate into success!

High school junior and there’s nothing as smooth as a Steely Dan groove! Music at that time was no joke! Chiguy
65 Olds Delta 88 blasting this on 8 track..!!!😮1973 and beyond..!!!😊
Wow yet another Steely Dan masterpiece love you guys
I have had this same reaction every time I’ve listened to this over the last nearly 50 years and thousands of plays!!!!
You guys know Jeff Porcaro as the drummer from Boz Skaggs "Lowdown" , Michael MacDonald's "I Keep Forgettin"" and drummer and founding member of "Toto".
Yes Yes Yes!!! In my top 5 Steely Dan songs. SO smooth to drive to ❤ Funk!
I loved your reactions, guys! This is the first track that let me know how bad a groove Steely Dan could lay down!!! It's been among my many SD favorites from the first time I heard it! As you felt, too, this one was shades of Steely Dan to come!
This and Your Gold Teeth I from Countdown to Ecstasy.
@@jml-rj5re I had not realized that Your Gold Teeth I was also a groove that implied what was to come, until your comment here. It so was though!
I mean what can you say 😅 they are just smooth

Staccato instrumentnin the back is a clavinet!
This is an under the radar tune but that Guitar brings it to life!
The rhythm guitar and clavinet are strong on this one.
The clarinet was probably David Paich.
They have a great sound, and really funky. 🎶🎶🎶👍

I second that! You need to compare the Duke Ellington and Steely Dan versions of "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo". A classic jazz piece.
This is simply...... " FUNKADELIC ". That's Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on lead guitar. A masterpiece in my opinion. Take care.
Q. What's your favorite Steely Dan song?
A. Whichever one I happen to be listening to right now.
Awesome! Thank you. Drummer the Late Great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) drummer for TOTO. 🙃
I just love the expressions on your faces when SD go beyond. That's exactly how I reacted back in the 70s. Love listening to you guys all the way from Sydney Aust.
Been a fan since 1973 when I first listened to my older sisters LP, Can't Buy a Thrill! I got to have my daily dose of the Dan! You guys rock!
Jeff Porcaro the drummer had just turn 17years old when he recorded it ...groovism
Damn, I really miss the 70's! So many memories and good times as a kid growing up! Thanks, La and Che for letting me groove with you for a moment! Peace, Love & Blessings my Brothers!!!

I love the Dan. This is one of my favorites. But then they all are. ❤

One of my favorite Steely Dan albums 👍🏻💯😎

This song and sentiment is the very definition of "Pretzel Logic" but a banger Indeed!
The rhythm section is deadly. The deep pocket drums and that funky chopping guitar lets Becker's bass weave with the melody while still supporting the groove. These guys are on a level that eclipses "popular music". Night By Night is my bitter angel on my left shoulder.
Dan n.1. Never did a song less than awesome. Still unbelievable quality. Seen live some years ago : remained speechless a couple of hours afterwards😊
Such a banger. From start to finish.
One of the greatest albums ever made.
There are some really good songs on this album.
"Any Major Dude Will Tell You"..... ;)
💯🐐💪🏻 🔜King of the world /Bodhisattva/chain lightning/. Ciao 🇮🇹
Oh yeah, this one is brutal. Love it!
I like how the horns repeat the intro(at 2:28) with additional harmonies, to set up the guitar solo.
One of my favourite SD tracks, so funky
Groove the Rhythm. Baby. 🇺🇸🏁🪴
How good are Steely Dan? Peerless IMO. I have always loved this track and it is almost 50 years old!
Love the funk!!
Can’t you see Eddie Hazel going to town on this song? The Dan in all their funky glory. 🔥
This one and Your Gold Teeth II - those two !!!!
Good choice. Sizzle for shizzle...
Same reaction. All their tracks bang 💯🖤
GREAT SONG ……. Instruments/vocals
WOWWWW
I love this track, it's just nasty. That groove and the horns are awesome. The solo aint bad either.
Love that shit. ⭐️😁
Love this album😊

I think this was the song which showed us the future direction of Steely Dan for the first time.
Expos! Love the hat. Suits a Dan man.
That groove… so tight 🤩 Grab your sticks, this is a fun one
Funk yes!
Hey guys The Eagles just announced their final tour and Steely Dans opening! I’m gonna see them in ATL Nov 2nd!
One of my favorites. It sounds like a bad@$$ cop show theme.
Jeff Pacaro was the drummer from TOTO
Wow. Awesome tune!
I could just losd Steely Dan and listen to them all day
Yes sir!!!!
Dis my shit!! 🔥🔥
Keep up the great work. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤.
Loving those horns.
All hail Skunk Baxter!
