    A 20 yr old Jeff Porcaro crushing that shuffle on drum. He did the whole album before jumping ship to form Toto. Though he did sessions for EVERYBODY in the 70's and 80's. One of The greats.

    Coming back from a college trip to Italy, just off the ferry late at night back in the UK there was a cassette player in the hire van we were traveling in and the driver, our tutor, asked me to find a tape to put on. This was in the glove compartment. Whenever I hear this song I remember that journey, Summer '76 that was!

    Just as you think you're going to hear a good swinging upbeat SDan song, Fagen hits you with "and catch the gray men when they dive from the 14th floor" lmao 🤣.
    This song foreshadows what themes they will tackle more on Royal Scam about the corporate greed screwing the common man and selling consumers short with their shams/scams.
    And you're right, this song could really swing live in concert and they would stretch it out. The horns would join in and extend the outro. Good concert tune and kind of a minor hit. You've only got a few left on Katy Lied I think and then you can backtrack to Pretzel Logic. Thanks for doing the Dan!

    our band covered this tune back in the day, usually in the third set....needless to say, the crowds went absolutely nuts, and occasionally we would throw it in as an encore. Still not sure who wanted to play it more, the crowd or the band. Like they say, if you aren't moving to this one, you're either hard of hearing, or your dead!

      @@leemcclements8889I've been listening to, and loving their music since their beginning. One of my all time favorite bands. And what's interesting is, I've never tried to understand the meanings of their songs. It's all about the music for me. But I'm like that with the majority of rock music. I think the musical part is what gets my brain's attention. Now someone like John Prine, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Kristofferson etc, basically leaves you no choice but to focus on the lyrics.
      I'm gonna start listening to some Steely Dan songs from a different perspective.

      @@hog7203 start listening to it from a " dark perspective" they are one of my all time favorite bands, incredible musicians. But....a lot of songs are very drug oriented..as you may well know. Some are geared toward other issues I don't want to get into on this board, but think Babylon Sisters, Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Cousin Dupree. Brilliant stuff, yet said topics are taboo. I love analyzing their music!

  • @alphaomega6062

    You say it was well put together and recorded - it sounds great - but their engineer, the late Roger "The Immortal" Nichols has said that when they were recording the tracks for this album the noise reduction system they were using was affected by a local radio station's radio frequency interference which affected the calibration of the equipment. When the station stopped broadcasting and they played back the master tapes the calibration was different and it didn't sound quite right and there was nothing they could do to recover how they'd wanted it to sound - even though they tried many things to fix it. So Donald and Walter were never truly satisfied with how Katie Lied sounded. Sounds pretty good to me though!

    • @mr.snicker-doodles7081
      @mr.snicker-doodles7081 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kbrewski1 Hmm, I think the gist of the "initial" comment was "Dancing in 1975.." not 1993. But with that said, they played a handful of dates in 72. Then 40-50 or so per year in 73-75. One show in 77 and ONE in 78...wasn't until 93 that they went back out, and even that was spotty. Only 20 or so dates...hence my comment. But I guess "Technically" they toured, but if you weren't in CA the odds of seeing them were slim at best!

    • @kbrewski1
      @kbrewski1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mr.snicker-doodles7081
      They stopped touring after the 1974 tour was over. Never played live in 75 as far as I know. Skunk and McDonald moved on to the Doobie Bros. I don't know anything about live concerts in 77 and 78 when Aja came out. That would be breaking news to most diehard Dan fans.
      I'm also puzzled by your claim that they "toured spottily or sporadically" when they restarted in 1993. They first did 2 summers of the New York Rock and Soul Revue with Boz Scaggs, McDonald etc. in 91 and 92. They played a handful of SD songs on those 2 tours. That led to the full blown reunion of Live Steely Dan touring in 1993. I was in attendance on Sept 1, 1993 in the StLouis area to hear my first Steely Dan songs played live as Steely Dan (aside from the previous year's Rock and Soul Revue show I was also at). So cool to FINALLY hear this music live after being a fan for 20 years. And to hear songs from Katy Lied, Royal Scam and Aja etc never played live before ever! Mind blowing.
      I just checked the setlist. There it is>>>>>Black Friday was the final track before mid concert intermission! Boooyaaa!!
      Looks like they played BF at every show that tour. They toured again in 1994. Then they released their 1st live album from the 93-94 tours.
      I missed the 96 tour, so when they toured in 2000 I made sure I saw that one when Two Against Nature was released. That was a huge tour 60 dates, 39 in the US. Great setlist that year.
      Between 2003 and last year Steely Dan pretty much toured every summer. Between 1993 to the pandemic, I've seen Steely Dan live over 20 times.
      So I don't know if you're buried in a mudslide there out in LA, but Steely Dan has toured STEADILY FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS. And I've heard Black Friday live MANY times.

      @mr.snicker-doodles7081 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kbrewski1 Well once again, getting back to my initial comment when I said "They didn't tour!" Which you then ignored and said "Well the were dancing in 93!"
      SO yes, exactly that's what Ii was saying, to most ppl's knowledge they did not tour much in the 70's, like at ALL. I think we both seem to be on that page, correct!? Well, I did some poking around and found this amazing site. Has EVERY show the ever played, along with sets lists and opening bands, take a look, pretty neat. Down in the lower Right of the opening page, you will see a list of shows they played "by year" and how many gigs they played per year. Oh, I was wrong, they did not play a single solitary show in 77, they were prolly recording Aja. Not saying this is Gospel, but It's pretty dang good! Ok, cheers!
