This looks so clean and nice, I love it! Made a C64 Raspberry Pi using the original bread bin model (which had a defective mainboard inside) and a Keyrah v2h myself slightly before the tiny THEC64 variant has been announced. Right now it holds a Pi 3B+ and a 500GB 2.5" hard drive which can either run on its own or thanks to unpopulated pins on the Keyrah, I can actually still use the Commodore keyboard for my other computers.
Hello, excellent video! I had this idea in mind and was thinking about how to execute it. Congratulations on your great work and patience in documenting. Hugs from Brazil!
Excellent video. The C64 Maxi arrives on the US market next month, and I had already planned to install a Pi in mine when it arrives. This is more ambitious than I had originally planned, but i like the idea of the integral PSU and the SSD. You have also saved me a lot of time working out what the connectors are called. I didn't want to cut the cables either!
You should mount the Raspberry Pi board upside down and rotate 90 degrees. Then you can use a thermal pad on the APU and use the whole aluminum sheet as a heatsink.
that c64 maxi is completely empty thats insane. i mean of course it is... but still what a stupid product! glad you are finding a good use for the lovely plastic case
Excellent project and excellent making! What about using a smaller C7 powercord instead of the massive C13? I guess for your PSU rating would be more than enough and looks much neat.
Confirmation - TheC64mini does not have a rasberry pi installed It does however have a "similar micropc" under the hood. Yet, thw raspberry pi is toting more horse-power

Nice project! However just how it's one in the Raspberry 400, you could use that large mounting plate as heat-sink! On the 400, it already proved how effective it can be. Ok, then maybe mounting the pi would be kinda different, that's true ... upside down?
@@christophbartneck Indeed. I am not sure if there is space for it (because of the kbd), but maybe the pi can be mounted upside down, with spacers, and putting a chunk of metal to conduct heat between the plate and the SoC on the pi. With thick enough metal+spacers that connectors can fit.
I couldn't find a c64 mini with 3 usb ports only 2. It doesn't change anything but I was wondering if anybody knows why this is like maybe its a older or newer version
@@christophbartneck I understand, just really talking bout the form factor. it seems like enthusiasts like yourself have inspired developers to adopt the form factor.
I would say good job. But you are using too much energy on the build. Next time. Instead of buying a metal plate and searching for plugs/extenders. Then use some epoxy two component glue and use a drill to mount spacers in the bottom case.
I see why, THEC64 is not hacker friendly with it having 256mb memory and its firmware is a ass, trying it get VICE working on its too hard to get it to work, I have tried and its not worth the effort, this is the best way to do it, THEC64 has been build with as little money as possible to make a profit and because it never got funded on Indiegogo, that's why the board has low memory and a very small nand chip(only about 700mb for the firmware), more info here about THEC64... thec64community.online/
No... It is not called Full size eighter. Official name is "TheC64" and that is about it. It is the original version, just launched after a cut down version was released. You know it by the name Mini, because it is a mini edition of the real version.

Meanwell makes some nice little power supplies. I've used many of them. Especially like the LRS-35-12
This is great improvement C64 & Pi, C64 was my first PC back in 1982.

Did it ever? I haven’t seen any for sale in the US at all
This is super impressive. You have some mad skills. :)
please do a shot of your wiring for power /
or post schematic
Impressive project Christoph! Nice little video too.
It would be cooler if the company that does the C64 starts doing a version of the Amiga 500 or 1200 so the case can be moved this way to.
Then just build your own. A1200 cases can be bought brand new. Or buy a VampireV4. Or buy an A500++ board and solder your own Amiga.
my micro usb port on my maxi is dead
so i may be following your steps closely to get it running again
if it fails- ill be throwing a pi in as well

Good idea!
Amazing, looking forward to the improvements!
Also where did you buy the c64?
Just a local reseller. This is a new computer and hence widely available.
I'm considering building a headless version of that, possibly with a c64 style terminal. Have any ballpark numbers on how much this project costs?
woooooooow! that's like the best neo c64 / retro station ever! well done!
I am going to do this with my RPI lol... damn awesome!
Incredible work. Congratulations!!!

If this was for sale, I'd buy it
well, there is the raspberry pi 400 now.
I bought one C64 mini, that I believe It has the same raspberry pi inside. After Just 5 uses, It broked and never turn on more.

It's probably a much better keyboard than the pi 400
Nice work! But it is not necessary to have a SD card installed as boot drive. A single SSD can boot the Pi, too!
Hi, check out my "updated" video that includes the improvements I made to this computer since.
Cool project, but the TheC64 Maxi is way to expensive to start with. Be better off finding a Old C64 case with keyboard, with no mainboard
Wonderful job!
Looks like a very fun project. Does the power supply emit a lot of heat? Any issues with heat dissipation?
Not yet, but I ordered a heat sink and fan for the Pi, just in case.
How did you share the USB keyboard between both systems?
I've just asked the same.
Hi, this is great. One question, does the keyboard still work for the C64? I couldn't see how you made two connections to both the PI and the 64?
No, it only works for the Pi. The C64 only has one USB port left (back) and I connected the joystick to it.
@@christophbartneck many thanks. I'm wondering if you could splice into the cabling so both would operate as long as only one machine was powered?
You might need a KVM switch.
I couldn't find a c64 mini with 3 usb ports only 2. It doesn't change anything but I was wondering if anybody knows why this is like maybe its a older or newer version
Why wouldn't you use a mounting of plastic or even masonite for the mounting plate? Thin plywood even - anything non-conductive!
Nuts and bolts work nicely in aluminium.
Awesome!! Thanks!
It’s cool. Too bad you cannot buy the C64 outside of Europe.
Is this keyboard usb? I would guess that it is.
Yes, it is USB
Then the Pi 400 comes out
Yes, but it lacks an audio jack and internal USB ports to connect an internal SSD.

It's not called a Maxi - it's the TheC64 Full Size - a Maxi is a feminine product (or an old British car) - Bitte kannst du einer neuer video machen?

At least in the US, it is being released as the C64 Maxi
