I see "fold" in this song as like putting down a hand of cards and exiting a game.
I was going to say the same thing, wasn’t sure if she had gotten the reference to playing cards.
right! and i think this is so clever because when you fold you're saying "well, this is what i've got, this is me, i'm out" and that ties directly onto how she should keep her distance from this idealized image of a boy that she keeps daydreaming about, and putting hope on
this album is literally a 10/10 like definitely in my top 5 albums ever

They're so poetic and complex but still catchy and makes you want to sing-along

I love Fiona Apple, this was the first song I EVER heard of her.
Sadly... I had an eating disorder for more than 14 years and used this to fuel it, as many people did back then in most "pro-ana" sites.
"Hunger hurts but starving works" fueled it so much for me and led to misinterpretation of the whole meaning of this song.

Love love love this song. Your interpretation aligns with my own. As someone who has also struggled with disordered eating (I was an overweight young pre-teen-teenager in the 90’s during the Kate Moss/heroin chic craze) this one really hits home with another layer of starving myself to be loved. Thankfully I’ve healed A LOT since then and even though I still sometimes struggle with disordered eating I have a much healthier relationship with food now than I did then.
I love seeing you so excited about art and share your perspective! It's so fun to watch someone likeminded who also isn't afraid to delve as deep as one can go. Keep it up!

also with the folding of hands i believe she’s also referring to a hand of cards in a poker game, like folding them because the odds are too shaky, at least that’s always been my personal interpretation🙏
I've always looked at that line the same way, like she knows she's been dealt a bad hand and can't win, so rather than bet on this person and lose, it's best for her to fold instead and walk away. Total self-preservation.

I interpret “folding hands” as a card game reference. Folding, as in giving up, because these hands are too shaky/risky to continue playing.
I also think that as well. I actually think it works as a metaphor (card game reference) and also the literal meaning of holding and folding one's own hands. It's genius.

Fiona wrote this song without knowing she was creating the most powerful and meaningful song for a girl with BPD, that's how we feel with every relationship: you daydream, want to be loved, but deeply inside you know that this boy is not trying to understand your problems and your emotions, so you decide stop loving, because when you're in love and ypu have BPD is painful af.

For me, this is a song about a passionless/sexless marriage. Loving someone, holding out hope, but nothing changes.
Folding is acceptance. Hunger for that type of affection. Starving works to keep the peace.
