It certainly is a nice hike, Des. The Winking Man is the place I most pass going to the southern Peaks. On yesterday's hike, I heard a few Cuckoos, but sadly, I never saw them. But I did have an Adder encounter on Curbar Edge. First time I've ever seen one of them. I felt exactly like you did when I hiked Edale Moor with Steven. It was just a struggle. I hope you are fully recovered, Des, and thanks for sharing.
Hi Chris. Not the most traditional looking pub, but very welcoming and I had a good night there👍 Very jealous of you spotting an adder! I was on the lookout for one on the way up Ramshaw Rocks, as it was a warm day and it looked like good habitat. Whatever was up with me, it never turned into a cold or anything. Maybe just an off day (or I need to lose some weight! 😁). Many thanks for watching and see you soon 👍😊
The countryside all around is just amazing! Looks like there are plenty of hiking opportunities. We've got our bugs out...such biting blackflies...take a chuck right out of you. Sure wish we had such footpaths, would make walking and hiking so much better for everyone to get out and about. We don't mind a good breeze...keeps them blackflies at bay. Another great day, Des! Bruce and Otis
Hi Bruce and Otis! At least these flies just got in your face, they didn't seem to bite! 😁 We are very lucky to have such a network of footpaths in the UK. Historically, I think a lot used to be used to travel between villages and farmsteads and they remain public rights of way. We do have to work to keep them open though, as I'm sure a lot of landowners would prefer them not to be there! All the best and see you both soon👍😊
Hi Garry & Caroline! There's some great views and wonderful hiking around there👍 Not a bad place to stop over if you're ever in the area too. Thanks for watching & catch you soon👍😊
The plant life reminds me a little of what we find in west Texas. But the terraine reminds me more of Colorado. It's so pretty. Ramshaw Rocks are interesting looking. They just jut up out of the landscape. That bridge looked a bit sketchy. 😂😂. Love the rock formations in the Roaches as well. However, I will say that I don't envy it it's name. That was an amazing view. Enjoy the pub. Be safe, Bill and DeAnna
Hi Bill & DeAnna. Ramshaw Rocks would definitely look better with the Colorado River in the valley rather than that busy road! 😁 I did wonder what American viewers might make of the name The Roaches! 😂 Apparently it actually evolved from the French word Roches (rocks) so nothing to do with those awful critters! Many thanks for watching! You take care also👍😊
That was a great hike Des some great views too 🤠👍 But those rock formations are amazing aren’t they wind rain ice over eons if only we could stand in the same place for millions of years to watch it happen 🙏🏼 The cuckoo’s where nice to hear 👍 All the best Des give my regards to Maria Regards Simon
Hi Simon. The rock formations are amazing there...huge faces everywhere you look! 😁 But the layering on the rocks at The Roaches is really something special to see! It was really nice to hear tge cuckoos, and eventually see one (even if it wouldn't pose for the camera 😁). All the best to you and yours too👍
Hello, dear Des, I hope all is well! Another beautiful hike with fascinating views. There is always so much to discover, isn't there? This hike presents several possibilities, all of them beautiful. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. Insects are unfortunately a problem... But it's always worth hiking in nature, enjoying it to the fullest and appreciating these unique moments. Thank you for making me appreciate the English scenery more and more, which is truly extraordinary! A hug and happy weekend! Renata
Hello Renata! The flies were a little bit of a nuisance, but at least they weren't biting lumps out of me! 😁 It is a great area to hike. All those rock formations are amazing! Glad you enjoyed joining me👍 All the best & have lovely weekend👍😊
Great walk Des...i love Ramshaw rocks, one of the best places in the whole of the Peak..we have been lucky with Cuckoos this year, hearing them everyday on our week away in Sedbergh, lucky enough to see one in Mallerstang before our climb up to Wild boar fell.....keep the walks coming mate.
Hi Steve. I remember you doing a video of Ramshaw Rocka a year or so ago. Lovely area isn't it? I never realised it was so good for cuckoos, but even the next day's walk, up behind Flash, I heard plenty of them. Cheers for watching & catch you soon👍
Great hike Des! Enjoyed seeing the views and what the trail is like too. Sorry to hear about the fly fest… I think a few even made it on camera! I like hearing about how you plan your route since we don’t usually have that many choices on our trails here. Great that you can get out on a weekday, when generally there are less other people- and a super deal to stay per night! 👌👍👍😄 See you again soon! ~ Cheers, Jen
Hi Jennifer. Yes, the ones attacking the camera lens made them look quite vicious! 😁 But luckily they didn't seem to be biters! All good food for the swallows though! We are very lucky in the UK with our network of footpaths and excellent maps. Obviously many routes are already well known, but it's great fun planning your own or piecing them together as you hike. Many thanks for watching! Take care and catch you soon👍😊
I did enjoy that des end to end. It was nice and mellow helped by the decent weather. The Roaches sure are impressive. I trust you had a good stay at the Inn. All the best. Mark
Hi Mark. It was fantastic up there, but I was struggling! 😁 Every climb nearly wiped me out. Just one of those days, I guess! The pub was very welcoming. A strange looking place, that I've since found out used to be a transport cafe in the sixties! Hope all is good with you👍 Many thanks for watching!
@@DesGreene Good to hear of the good vibes up top bit sorry about the tiredness des. I get it - hope you're alright. Hey, we like weird eh? Me? On trail for the first time in 2 years this weekend. Testing my leg and ankle out. Feels OK. I'm excited. Peace.
Hello Kai! It's a great hike, but those flies! 😁 At least they didn't appear to bite! I was ready for that beer at the end👍😊 All the best & catch you soon👍
I always look forward to finding out what beer you enjoy at the end of your walks Des! 😄 I like a drop of Black Sheep too 🍺 Hope the Winking Man was a good stopover. A real cracker of a walk there, Ramshaw Rocks and the Roaches, possibly my favourite edges walk in the Peak District. Glad you got a see a cuckoo in the end. All the best 👍
Hi Patrick. It was a great little stopover, thanks👍 It is a lovely walking area, but nice to be able to do it mid week. It does attract a lot of visitors! 😁 I seem to have heard cuckoos on almost every hike this spring, but only had that single fleeting glimpse of one! Many thanks for watching! Hope your week is going well👍😊
Nice looking moors Des.....look good for wimberries in a couple of months. Well done on the cuckoo too. I've not heard one yet but have planned a walk with them in mind on Friday. Bye for now, Chris
Hi Chris. Yes, there were wimberry bushes all around, so should be plenty. It seems a good area for cuckoos. I did another walk a few miles away near Flash the next day, and there seemed to be a few around on that one as well. Hard to judge numbers, as they move about so much and the sound carries such a distance. I've always found Crowden a good spot for them in the past. Best of luck wherever you try!
Hi Des, what a lovely hike! I haven't heard of Ramshaw Rocks before; that's on the 'to-do' list now. You had very nice weather too, but early into the video, there appeared to be many fly bugs! Yikes!
Hi Rachel. Those flies were everywhere, but luckily didn't seem to be biting! These days I don't have much hair for them to get caught up in either! 😁 I think most people head for The Roaches but Ramshaw Rocks and Hen Cloud are both worth a visit👍 Many thanks for watching! See you soon👍😊
Nice one Des Looks a great stopover. I don’t think there are as many Cuckoos around this year. We have a few but not many. I’ve sort of discovered the trees where they call from - each year seems to be the same trees Nice place for a Geography Field trip - wished I had paid more attention on mine! We did Aberystwyth and Swanage. Far too many pubs per square mile for good learning!! This is a fantastic area Des, it’s on our list A good walk - but colds everywhere - slowing me down too mate. And you can’t beat a well kept Black Sheep to finish!! Have a good weekend 👍👍👍
Hi Dave. It seemed like a good area for cuckoos. Heard several on next day's walk also. I should have tagged along on the field trip...it might have reminded me to say sandstone instead of limestone! 😂 The pub was a strange looking place. Not your traditional country pub, but I since found out it was built as a transport cafe in the sixties! Very welcoming, decent beer and reasonable food prices though!👍😁 Cheers for watching & catch you soon👍👍
Hi Des the pub you stayed at was a great price at £5 ! That was a lovely 14km walk with some nice views and interesting rocks and barking dogs ! Shame about the insectfest, we had this at a fort we visited last week. I often wonder so if hikers like you in the UK use any form of insect spray . Do you ? I have just started using a natural one and this week while out in the mountains walking it did the trick and kept them well away from me ! Nice that you heard cuckoos and I know what you mean about having no energy sometimes. Hope you didn't get sick. Lovely hike ~ Anna 👍
Hi Anna. Yes, £5 was very reasonable. Some pubs let you stay for free if you eat there, but the food was a very reasonable price at this pub anyway! There were clouds of flies, but luckily they weren't biting 😁 I do wear repellant in Spain for the mozzies. Over here I carry a head net for midges but don't usually use sprays. Whatever was up with my energy levels, I don't seem to have come down with anything. Hopefully just having an off day 😁 Hwyl fawr, a cael penwythnos gwych👍😊
