Had the misfortune to be sent to Countesthorpe College the year it opened. More than fifty years on, it still angers me to think of all those kids whose education was trashed as a result of its existence.
I taught there from its opening to 1972. Mixed feelings still about it. Many good ideas and teachers but perhaps too many new things introduced at the same time. I still wonder whether schools (certainly as they are now) are the best way to educate people.
Went to school in the 1980"s and saw many problems under funding, school mates that were from family's that could not feed them properly. Even the school teachers brought food in to help. It's still fresh in my mind who those teacher's were. Some have ended up doing time in state prison, because of the cuts by the conserve government. Will ever forget. Don't vote conserve
I started at Countesthorpe in 1986, and I can tell you it hadn’t changed much since this was filmed. Judging by the fashion it’s must of been filmed in the later 1970’s?
I attended Countesthorpe College 1979 > 1981. It was unbelievable. Learning areas had 3 to 4 classes of pupils (around 120) & were called "pods" . As the video reveals, a radio was allowed on each table in the pod (which was fine, if everyone's got the same radio station on!). Most of the time, it was chaos. The first thing you came across as you enter the college thro' the main doors, was a "smokers coffee bar"...for kids!! FFS, ofsted would throw away the key! - Teachers never really pushed you to achieve anything (the old left wing for you). I actually never played truant during the two years I attended. Sad really, I would've done my work if I had've done!
I went to primary scolopendre allot like and the headmaster real,y scared me I coukd go in any classroom I wanted to do spent all those school days avoiding the head and being a class ahead of him there were no door to classes and if felt like I had to decide what to do I didn’t learn anything then we moved and I went to normal school I respect anyone who’s trying to improve schools but you need to catch the people it doesn’t work for
I went to CC from 1980 to 1982, which was a complete waste of my time. If you wanted to work then the teachers would help you, if not then they didn't care if you turned up for lessons or not. I chose the latter and regretted it as soon as I left, (many years of expensive night school to catch up). The teachers were not much older than the students, this 'experiment' should never have been allowed to take place, IMHO.
Well I definitely am lol! It's weird seeing this as I was in the classroom next door. Unusually for us, we were quietly working and were looking through the door window to see what the noise was, so we were very indignant about this documentary. I can't remember being that young though!
A ridiculous social experiment. How the hell could anyone learn anything during one of those lessons. I know it's easy to criticise but bloody hell, a lot of well-meaning, modern educationalists trying to make a difference but creating more issues for the kids further down the line. It would be interesting to find what happened to the students once they left that school.
My dad is in this rip dad 3 months uve been gone
A special memory of him forever. ❤ sorry for your loss
amy davis who was your dad if you don’t mind me asking ? I went to this school from 79-81. Sorry for your loss

I went here in the 80s. Great memories
The term Lavatory has become archaic in English
My old school. I can remember many faces but only 3 names!
I don't remember the teacher's being so young! Mine you I'd only be age 13 myself.
The trip to London was to visit the Natural History and Science Museums.
Just.. perfect

Good education has boundaries. It must start with discipline and rules to benefit the majority and not pander to the few
These students will all be old fart knockers now LOL
