- Tomb of Annihilation…But Better - Trickster Gods Part 2
Having gods is usually a pretty good thing…unless they are dirty, dirty tricksters. That’s what the people of Chult had to deal with once their primary deity, Ubtao, abandoned them. The vacuum was filled by nine trickster ‘gods’ who rose to power masquerading as figures of local folklore and myth. To solidify their bona fides, they took on the totems of the indigenous animals of Chult: I’jin the almiraj, Kubazan the froghemoth, Moa the jaculi, Nangnang the grung, Obo’laka the zorbo, Papazotl the eblis, Shagambi the kamadan, Unkh the flail snail and Wongo the su-monster.
As written, these gods don’t really figure into the campaign until the players reach Omu and then progress to the Tomb of the Nine Gods. These gods were betrayed by Acererak and interred in the tomb that bears their name. They hate him as much as the party does.
Why not make them more prominent in the early half of the campaign? Make them more meaningful and make them more active participants in Acererak’s destruction? Why not indeed.
In this Part 2 video, I finish up my description of the nine jungle sanctuaries that I created to help my party get to know the trickster gods, and possibly get killed by them.
It will go without saying (mostly ‘cause I keep forgetting to say it) that this series will be SPOILER HEAVY and is meant for DMs only, and maybe players who’ve already foiled Acererack’s plans. Don’t ruin this amazing adventure by peeking under the curtain.

Dude I love this so much. This is exactly what is missing from TOA. There is a guy named Rich Stangle who has a game blog where he has a campaign diary for his group in TOA and he had a great bit in port nyanzaru where the Princes throw the Trickster Games. 3 days of games with 3 games each. Gives the players a chance to earn a little coin and they play against some of the guides. Introduces the trickster gods and their tenants early as well as showcase the strengths of the guides the party may want to hire. Great stuff. You should check it out. Again Love these videos. I am watching them piece by piece (between studying.. law school is a killer).
Thank you very much! I'm glad you found me. I'll have to check out that blog, I love seeing all the extra things DMs add to campaigns. I hope these videos are a nice break from your studies. Rock on!
Thanks again for another great video. I especially like the idea about the moral dilema with the tressure and the woman. Also i had some cool riddle ideas floating arround my mind, that i can finally incorporate in my campagne (Maby some normal riddles, or a situation were a weird, confused, dumb NPC-guardian of the sanctuary asks some really stupid anti-riddles like "When i close my eyes, where does the sun go?", "what is not my favourite color?" or "I have 43 Apples, 32 Bananas and 72 Pears, and i eat two of each. Why am i still hungry?").
Your videos never fail to get my creative juices flowing.
And being personaly mentioned in this video, put the biggest grin in my face. You not only made my day, you made my week!
Can't wait for Needle's Bones. Rock on!
These are all great ideas. I'm so happy that you're finding value in them. I'm doing my best to keep up! Thanks for your comments and your support. Rock on!
I worry that future you has a pulse rifle instead of a guitar amp...doesn't bode well, I feel.
@@inncubus666 no one expects the pulse rifle
