What do you remember most about Paul Lynde? 🤔
He did an episode of The Munsters that was hilarious. I think he played a plastic surgeon. The man was fantastic with perfect timing. Paul Lynde could have me still laughing hours after the TV show ended.
Hollywood Squares and his quick witted answers..... even though, as a kid I didn't understand most of them.

it's like people finding out that Liberace was gay. Are you Tommy? Deaf, dumb and blind. Same when Elton John came out. Did people not see the cover to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"? I was a kid and I knew and I lived in Podunk. Very sad that it makes a difference to so many "Ed Necks". Leave people the fuck alone.
A tragic & sad legacy??? He was pure genius & very gifted. Uncle Arthur & had an unforgettable laugh. He'd be 92 in 2020; May God rest his soul....
Actually, he'd be 94, the same age as Queen Elizabeth II. They were both born in 1926.

At the end of every Hollywood Squares show, the announcer would say "The stars are briefed before each show", so it was no secret that they fed Paul jokes, along with all the others. It was up to him whether he wanted to use his own material or theirs, and his great timing and delivery always helped make the joke better. A celebrity from the 60s and 70s with drinking/drugs and ego issues - this was more the rule rather than the exception - best to put these things in context. I think he was a really talented guy who worked in a lousy time for gays in the entertainment business - he was type-cast into a couple of shallow roles throughout his career and never got a chance to spread out.
you made your case perfectly. paul made my life happier every time .. every time i saw him and he made a joke and that smirk and those eyes... and his movements. pure paul. he was just himself. he suffered that sucked, but hey he did have some fame. he did dam good for all the mine fields he had to traverse.
In Paul's case, it wasn't always the joke itself that was funny. It was the way Paul delivered the punchline that was funny. Pure comic genius!!!
You’re dead on Brian. I believe Buddy’s issue was Paul success with pre-show info. They all had lead in info…many hit pop-ups and grounders, while Paul belted them out of the park.
I ❤️’d his self deprecating humor. Even as a kid. I’m sorry to hear of his demons. It reminds me of that saying, “Tears of a Clown”.

I remember as a kid, being fascinated by Paul. I enjoyed him so. I really wish he had found true happiness. Such a shame.
I was too young to understand a lot of his jokes but I loved him, specially on Hollywood Squares.

I never got to see him in person...but I did come across Bill Daley in Hawaii. He gave me the nastiest look that my whole opinion of him changed. He was not the happy funny Roger Healy any more.

Back in the mid-seventies I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Lynde after one of his one man shows. I just remember him being one of the nicest, kindest, gentlemen. He went out of his way to make all of us fans feel comfortable . I was heartbroken when he passed away.
When I heard of Paul's passing , I was more shocked than anything else.....I always loved his sense of humor; not only as Uncle Auther on 'Bewitched' but also the Center Square on 'Hollywood Squares' ....I remember watching an interview with Elizabeth Mongomery in which she said she felt like she and Paul became " buddy-buddy" behind the screen & that 'Sammy' knew what was going on with him & his ' career' or lack there of....I believe the one thing that clouded his personality was the fact that he couldn't be open and honest with everyone ; hence , him delving deeper into drugs..... While he was alive, he was one of my favorite actors. .......and I think alot of ppl felt that way.
I remember him so much; I liked a lot they way he gesticulated in each of his presentations. RIP Paul.
That's surprising that he only did 11 episodes of Bewitched. I remember that episode of Uncle Arthur and Serena losing their powers. It was so funny and it seemed that Paul Lynde and Elizabeth Montgomery were having a blast.
Paul's first episode of Bewitched was as a one time character. A clerk in a store or something, I don't remember right off hand, They had such a good time working with him that they created a recurring character for him...Uncle Arthur.
@@efandmk3382 Paul's first appearance on Bewitched was the driving instructor Harold Harold. He was hired to teach Samantha to drive. That was in the early Bewitched, when it was filmed in black and white. (Jan Griffiths).
My favorite Bewitched episodes always included Paul. I thoroughly enjoyed him even as a little kid.
Loved him when he was on the Dean Martin Show..Dean got a kick out of his showmanship.A great talent and quick witted.
Paul Lynde was so entertaining and memorable, I always wondered why I didn't see more of him--the epitome of "leave them wanting more." In fact I still feel that way about him, today.

I watched him last night on Carol Burnett show 1971. The 'As the Stomach Turns' skit where Harvey Korman is in his funniest female character whipping Lynde with a frying pan is into pain in this Mr. Miserable character and it is hysterical!!🤣

Aw, I feel bad about his struggles and disappointments now that I know of this. You said to let you know what we think is his best one liner or zinger. Ok. It's not a one liner or zinger. It's his presence, persona, laugh, smile, eye expressions, facial expressions, head movements, eye rolls, VOICE, perfection in timing and delivery, and being more prepared than anyone else. What he doesn't know is that he was more loved and known from TV than he could have been from movies. Often imitated; NEVER duplicated. I'll bet he was a HOOT at stand-up comedy. Did he do any? He would have nailed it every time if he was on "Whose Line Is It Anyway."
I think his quick wit was by far the best of anyone in Hollywood history, all things/situations considered.

Isn’t it a shame that some of the funniest, talented people are in real life depressed and insecure. It is such a shame they didn’t see what we see. I just loved his voice. I remember listening to all his animated characters with my grandfather. His characters were always my favourite as they had a naughty side but you couldn’t help but love them 💖
I think in his case he was depressed and insecure because his being gay would not have been accepted by middle America as it is today and he had to hide it from the public and his fans. Your career could be ruined if the public found out. Like could you imagine Rock Hudson coming out as gay at the height of his fame in the 50's and 60's? He was such a studly heartthrob women would have been in shock and disbelief had they known then that he was gay, and his career would have been over before it really started.

20 yrs ago, I tried to enter acting, and I often saw many unhappy aspiring performers, I gave up after a yr., it's a very tough profession to survive in, the constant rejection and dealing with auditions can really tear you down

Paul in Bye Bye Birdie was our favorite for me and my 5 Sisters. First, his facial expressions then what came next out of his mouth kept us laughing so hard we were in tears !! Sad to hear of his tragic behind the scenes persona !!

Blake: Everyone remembers "Kids" from that musical (and I've taught the song in my Humor class), but still today, when I hear Paul Lynde (and his on screen family) singing the "Hymn [to Ed Sullivan] for a Sunday Evening," I crack up every time. He and Alice Ghostley were both in the film edition of _New Faces_ and they played male and female versions of the same sort of long-suffering character, much like Harry McAfee in BBB. Neither was ever able to shed the typecasting. She dealt with it much better, living to 84, and actually getting a role in _The Graduate_ . I was studying in Columbus when Lynde got into an altercation in or in front of a gay bar. I can't remember now if he was arrested or his bodyguards whisked him away before he got in trouble with the law, but we heard about it on campus and heard that he was definitely not a happy drunk. His long interview with Johnny Carson, in which he talks about his weight problem, and his appearance on _I've Got a Secret_ in which his secret is having lost 95 lbs, are really quite moving. He tells Carson he resisted doing talk shows because it was so hard for him to be himself in public. How sad that he suffered so much and caused others to suffer too. Were he 25 years old today, he might have turned out a much happier man and maybe had a wider ranging career. I wonder if he ever realized how much laughter he brought to viewers on every one of what apparently turned out to be 1,346 daytime and evening Hollywood Squares appearances, and how much better they felt after that half hour of silliness.
I remember arguing with my mother back in the 1970's (during my coming out) that both Paul Lynde and Liberace were gay. She was a fan of both men and totally convinced that they were both straight arrows, who were just a bit flamboyant.

in the 50's and 60's being on TV was considered second class. Doing a commercial was an embarrassment. So even being on a successful TV show would be disappointing. First class actors were on broadway or in the movies. Now of course, things are totally different.

@M S certainly know Cary Grant, Errol Flynn, Randolph Scott and many others were bi or gay. Never heard that about Spencer Tracy. Odd that he not only was married to a woman but maintained a very close relationship with Kate Hepburn all those years, in that case. In an episode of "Bewitched," Uncle Arthur is asking Samantha and Darin why he's not being invited to dinner. He makes
reference to a rather big roast that Samantha has in the oven. U-A states, "This roast is big enough to serve EIGHT people,
and a roast for EIGHT should NOT be ATEN by TWO." I was in elementary school at the time (I'm 64 now). I realize that
this statement is such a DUD NOW, but at the time it just had me in absolute hysterics. -- But also, I believe it was Paul
Lynde who once said that when he moved to New York City, he was in New Jersey. He was out shopping with this friend
when some Noo Joyzie type heard him talking loudly and being himself. This Joyzie tough guy says to Paul, "Yaz know
wut dey oughta do with you queerz? Dey oughta round yaz all up and put yaz on an island somewheyah!" To which Paul
responded, "They have, and they call it Manhattan."

9/22/20 ..... I was a faithful watcher of the Hollywood Squares for the longest time. I used to love when contestants picked on Paul Lynde. He owned that square !!!! OMG ... I think all of us held our breath in anticipation of not knowing what zingers Paul would say. I thought he was one of the greatest comic actors of his time. Shame he couldn't see what we saw. I miss the show and I sure do miss him. I hope wherever you are, you are finally getting top billing.

I have always loved Paul Lynde, growing up watching his hilarity on tv. I notice even today how some actors use his mannerisms and vocal nuances. I feel bad that he didn’t have peace in his life. I hope he is at peace now.

I was just a kid, but I loved Paul Lynde. The best line I heard on the " Squares" was: "How would you let your spouse know that you were not in a romantic mood?" Part of his ongoing success was the fact that his home was within walking distance of the TV studios he worked at. Producers in a casting pinch could simply call him in if they were short an actor.
To be a celeb now, unfortunately, would mean him sacrificing his soul and pledging himself to darkness in order to have the opportunities of a career. You'd see pictures of him steepling his hands together to make a triangle, or covering one eye to reference the All-Seeing Eye. Its gatekeepers would expect him to participate fully in their degrading power ceremonies, and his backing out, at any point, would lead directly to his celebrity obituary.
Paul Lynde may have felt trapped, but his situation could well be a lot worse now.
I remember his Hollywood Squares answer to the question, “is the Sphinx male or female?” His response was, “ I can’t tell, because it’s laying down in the sand”

Paul Lynde was a comedic genius - his humor is irreplaceable. His snarky, deprecating style has been the underpinning for so many successful comedies. He gave us a part of himself that we can carry in our hearts forever. :D
I remember watching Paul growing up from a kid & on up on tv. He was always funny on Hollywood Squares & bewitched. Thanks Paul for the laughs!

Hard life? It seems fairly obvious that the only hardship he encountered after his breakthrough was his own narcissism. He was constantly in very well paid work and, more often than not, high as a kite. Of course I'm sorry the guy was unhappy but more sorry he was unable to see that his unhappiness (at least about his work) was completely ridiculous.

Did you know the voice of Roger the Alien on American Dad is a tribute to Paul Lynde?
I think that one of the best ways to describe him would be high-strung. Always full of an eternal energy like a power transformer. The constant sarcasm clearly shows his discontented inner self. Even if they were scripted, the delivery shows the truth behind. I hope he found peace at last when he died.

Look up Frankie Howerd & Larry Grayson in the U.K. Both "camp" gay comedians who were big telivision stars from the `50`s until the `80`s.The same kind of humour as Paul Lynde. Both had troubled lives. Frankie was treated for depression at one point. Larry felt guilty about his sexuality. There is rather a good T.V. drama about Frankie`s life called "Rather You Than Me."
Hollywood was probably the easiest and most accepting atmosphere to be gay. Plenty of straight frustrated actors have drunk and drugged themselves to death.
That's what happened to Natalie Woods. She got mad because of RJ and Walken. Probably threatened to tell everyone and that was a big no no at that time. Robert was known as a ladies-man, from It Takes A Thief, thru Switch then Hart to Hart. Natalie telling the World she caught him in bed with another Man would have sunk both their careers and might've hurt her reputation as well. I find rather painful that these Men had to hide who they were and how they felt. Nowadays it wouldn't matter. What a shame that it was like that.

I was in middle school when he was the center square in the 1970's. He was hilarious. Even at the time, a lot of people knew he was gay and didn't care. My mom even pointed it out while we were watching it together, but again that didn't matter.
The 70s were much more accepting. Elton John and Freddie Mercury were at their peak, even in rock circles. No one cares. David Bowie came out as bi, and again, people didn’t care. Maybe figures in fashion also were at their peak.

Paul Lynde wasn’t exactly in the closet, but he was a gay man in Hollywood at a time when that was socially taboo (and illegal). That must have been hard for him.
It’s interesting that he was inspired to become an actor by “Ben Hur,” since the homosexual subtext of that film is one of its most-discussed aspects.

Yes. The character that was Ben Hur’s best friend when they were young &the one he ended up racing in the chariot race. I think the part was played by Hurd Hatfield. Take another look at the film. See what you think.
@chris wilber calm down. It has been so many years since I have seen Ben Hur, a rather mediocre movie, that I can’t say who is right, but your outrage is disproportionate to the statement. Not unlike Carmela Soprano’s reaction when told that the famous novel “Billy Budd” had a clear homosexual subtext, which it certainly does.

It's sad that the best comedians have to draw on their pain to be so damn funny. Paul was one of my favorites growing up.
I knew him. He was a gentle, kind man and as a secondary talent, he went out of his way to help everyone he saw needed help; sort of like Mike Todd. I loved him and he was kind to me. He knew he was on a return as the real dramatic actor he was; and people around him knew that. He never showed bitterness that I saw. He told me about a number of events in his life. He was more concerned about his physical illnesses and surviving to work in dramas than any of this bitter babble. He gave much away. Would that his friends dropped this type of garbage talk and described him truthfully.

I'd heard he was devoted to his chosen family. He reminds me of a lot of gay men I know, like myself. We can be loyal to a fault to those who mean something to us, but always having to fend off people who would betray us and our 'filthy little secret everyone knows'. If he was ambitious he was no different than any other star who ever made it. He's another victim of show buisiness, one of the hardest and most rapaciously severe of all the arts. I don't know of one person that comes through it with a whole skin.

He was way ahead of his time. It's unfortunate Hollywood didn't see this unique and rear speciment of talent.
Always loved the sound of his voice.
I so enjoyed those zingers he gave on the Hollywood Squares and his appearances on Bewitched. However, what I most enjoyed was seeing him play Louis B. Latimer on Gidget Grows Up and I felt his voice was perfect for Templeton the rat in the animated hit Charlotte's Web. The actor may have been disappointed in never landing a major role on the big screen but he left behind innumerable viewers who remember him for his talents as a comedian.

lots of well delivered lines over the years, but one that stands out is when he's on Samantha's couch, w/ a six gun attached to each of his feet, firing caps at him. he says "excuse me not getting up, but my feet are killing me."
My father was a cab driver in Boston and one night he picked up Paul Lynde. Mr. Lynde got into the cab all laughing and giddy and proceeded to put his feet up on the seat of the cab. My father, who was always mindful of keeping his cab clean, asked Mr. Lynde to take his feet down off the seat. Mr. Lynde refused and said to my father, "Do you know who I am?" My father replied, "Yeah. And if you don't take your feet off the seat I'll throw you out of the cab." He took his feet down.
He was an underrated comedian.

Pamelyn Ferdin played his daughter on The Paul Lynde Show and she said that he was a troubled man. I asked her at what point she no longer wanted to do the show, and she said that she didn't want to do the pilot!
But Paul had an ad-lib that showed that he had his good side. In an episode entitled "Meet Aunt Charlotte", Paul was supposed to come in the door and reply to Pamelyn's greeting with a zinger. But instead he ad-libbed "Every time I see you, I weep for joy!:" Pamelyn was confused and glanced at her TV mother (Elizabeth Allen) who gestured to her to keep going. Paul then grabbed Pamelyn and kissed her. Whatever line she had after that, she said would no longer have made sense, so she simply left the scene. She says that she now sees it as a sweet father-daughter moment that was much better than what was originally written.

Personally, just my opinion, Paul carried two many insecurities around his whole life. The alcohol and drugs just triggered all his resentment from life long pain that when he was under the influence of alcohol and or drugs he had no filter of mercy for anyone. RIP PAUL you sure made me laugh over the years and as far as being gay anyone could see that but I still had a big crush on you. Very attractive man.
I recently came across his own tv show "The Paul Lynde Show" from 1972 that only lasted one season. It had the same humor and delivery that he was know for, not sure why it only lasted one season.
I liked the Show, I wish it had continued. He was great but I think something happened to him when he was a Child that kept him in tremendous pain. My heart hurts for Paul.
After a well recieved first episode, the show recieved bad publicity that subsequently resulted in a ratings collapse.

While I love his style and comedic genius, thats all he did....the same character no matter what role he was put in. So it makes sense that he was not a movie star and struggled for success. He really was one dimensional. I mean did he ever play a part where "Paul Lynde" didn't come screaming through? Exactly.
@@mannfan12 you have a very valid point but the character Paul Lynde was great, he was hilarious doing Paul which is evident by all the people that copied him. Even today Roger from American Dad sounds suspiciously alike. I think he had a tremendous amount of rage from Childhood and he never felt good enough on the inside to be a real Star.
I was a kid when Paul Lynne was on Hollywood Squares and I found him hilarious then. I was so saddened when I saw a biography about him on TH-cam and found out about his insecurities and unhappiness. I wished I had never watched it because you want to think someone who can make Millions of people laugh and feel better would be so happy themselves. I guess fame & fortune can't bring you happiness unless it truly comes from within your heart and soul. May God Bless his Soul.

I was lucky enough to stand next to him and get his autograph during a Jerry Lewis Telethon that was in our town. Sadly, I cannot locate my autograph book. But I do have my memories. Thank for this video. Very informative 😁👍
