My 5 year old on the autism spectrum loves to play with me and I play chase, sing songs, dance , hide and seek and do simple pretend play with him. He likes to play chase game repetitively and even if I try a new game he would eventually convert it into a chase game. For example feeding the baby and running away with the baby and making me chase after him pretending he stole the baby. Cook some pretend food in kitchen and then running away with the food and me chasing him. Putting stuffed toys to sleep and he pushing them away to make me mad and then chase after him. Play hide and seek and in the middle suddenly running away and asking me to chase him. What should I do to in this situation and how to expand my play?

Hello and thank you for reaching out. It is good to hear that your child enjoys interactive plays such as chase. You can try modelling to him other appropriate ways to play with a certain item/activity (eg: setting up a list of things we can do with the baby and do it together with him). If he chooses to always run away and expects you to chase him, you can extinct the behavior (not give attention to it and not to respond) but can redirect him back to the other things you can do with that toy. Having visuals of when he can play chase would be very helpful as well as it will communicate and provide predictability to him on when it is appropriate for chase game (Eg: at the playground).
We hope this is helpful. If you do have further enquiries, do reach us at enquiries@autismmalaysia.com and our team would love to get in touch with you. Thank you and have a great day!

Thank you so much for your wonderful tips. Not paying attention to chase game abs redirecting him to the pretend play with toys worked very well. Thank you so much 🙂🙏
