Shoulder width, but also stem length and bars with sweep and rise vs flat are all other factors to consider.

Thanks Jon, I am new to this sport, as 52 year old I need all the advantages I can get with some of the better, younger riders! Maximizing efficiency of effort goes along way to keeping up!

Excellent explanation and thought process! I've heard "try different widths" before but no real reasoning or framework was given. Your video made something click for me as I realized that the standard bent over row, pushup, or bench press width is what I was really looking for. This would be where my hands would naturally go because it would give me the best hand positioning biomechanically. For me, I just grabbed an olympic barbell with a comfortable grip to do a push or pull exercise and then measured the width: 780mm. Makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Struggling to help my wife with her setup because I can guess all day but in the end it is all personal preference. When people are new to riding it is hard to nail this down because everything is so new. I have gotten her in the ballpark and given her some items to pay attention to while riding. This video helped me confirm that are in the right area. Going to start with 760 and work down from there to see what she likes.

Thanks. Generally speaking it seems that folks tend to make bar width calculation more complicated than it needs to be. For me, I just drop to the ground and do a push-up and take note of where my body naturally places my hands and use that as my bar width guide.

trail riding & xc that is also my rule of thumb, more aggressive riding where you need more leverage my bars are 1/2 my hand width wider on each side. push up rule for most while more towards bench press when you need power & control of the bar

I tried this and measured about 800mm, but I use 760-780 bars, wider just feels too wide. But this is good way to get started.

Going from 700 to 760 (installed but not tested), every test I do, including yours, tends to 800m, weird for a XCO 29er HT... I'll try the 760 first... nice video!!!

This is a great video, Like bench pressing, i have the most strength over the bar when my arms are wide enough to be comfortable, I,m 52 and want to upgrade my Super V.

Great video! How do you translate that to real numbers now? Would you measure from tape to tape? Outside of the hands?

I reckon this method only suit for flat 0 degree sweep handlebar...but still, stem lenght is the question...

This video was the best I've seen on this subject. I am 5 ft 3 and ride 800mm which I know is not normal but it feels perfect and I have great control no issues what so ever. Is this ok?

Oliver Wadeson 800mm is better for smaller riders? I'm 5'5 13 years old

I think 1 meter wide is perfect; 1.2 meters for big guys! 🤪
