  • The Emergent Technologies and Design program (EmTech) at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, focuses on the dynamics of complex systems of the natural world, together with an identification of the operative spatial and temporal scales of their phenomena and their critical thresholds. The students applied Wallacei as part of EmTech’s research agenda to investigate and evolve given tower primitives towards a set of objectives derived from distinct environmental and geographical contexts through applications of evolutionary computation.
From the seminar course, 'Emergence and Evolutionary Computation’ Felipe Oeyen and Depolina Ray used Wallacei to evolve morphological variations of Bank of America Tower by CookFox architects with respects to its urban and environmental contexts. The group’s evolutionary simulation comprises 10 objectives that address the tower and its urban context simultaneously in one design experiment. Connecting the important nodes of the selected urban fabric such as The Grand Central Station and The Empire State Building and Increasing the designated public areas were amongst the objectives addressing the urban configuration. Controlling the shadow of the building on its context and designating the connection spots to the newly generated urban path were amongst objectives evolving the morphology of the tower itself. The group took advantage of the machine learning algorithms embedded in #Wallacei to filter down the generated population to a candidate set of solutions.
