IMO, it is really an attempt to stifle the students' rights by redefining the area from "open to public access" to "closed to public access", thereby taking it out of the category of public areas. Technically, Columbia University could then shut down protests under the guise that it is private property. It is a legal maneuver. I don't believe such a move would stand up under judicial review.
Professors just give everyone a pass now. They are terrified one of these kids will get upset and make up some fake allegation that will ruin their career. So they just pass them all now.......its easier.
