      @Warning56kb yer guide is great - I wrote a script that incrementally changes fan speed dependant on the highest sensor temps in the server. Works pretty good and 7% keeps me under 30C at idle. Ramps up to 98% in 3% increments... runs safely when I'm using the server but I'm not yet sure if I wanna run it in production when I'm not present - that's the goal tho. My other r330/320 1U servers fans are much less spicy. Even if I set iDrac to it's lowest 35% minimum fan speed it never gets that low 42% at idle. I can post my code maybe we could develop it to be trusted in production...

      @@paullee107 Nice, and thank you for the kind words! I've always wanted to sit down and play with RACADM to try different configurations, but that can keeps getting kicked down the road.
      What would be cool is to have a configuration where only specific fans or groups of fans would adjust speed. Say... only CPU 1 starts being loaded. Only fan 6 (or 5, 6 & 7) would really need to increase speed to cool the CPU, keeping the sound even lower than all increasing speed. That and for say, you have a transcoding GPU in some slot in Riser 1. If it's reporting temp to iDRAC you could increase the speed of just the last fan or the last pair.
      Do you have PSU fan control as well?

    • @paullee107
      @paullee107 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Warning56kb great ideas about the cpu 1/2 and possible different fans blowing. I'm currently changing mu script so that variables at the top allow users to enter their desired temp fan speeds - not just rely on what I prefer. For production I was also thinking about error control so that a dead script could be quickly restarted. (Although I haven't had any failures like that...)
      I haven't done ANYTHING with PSUs - mainly because I don't hear them. :P
      I'll get a github up and share my kick later.
      In the idrac RACADM can we change the fan curve? In my iDrac I can only change limited options and minimum fan speed is 35% which is way overkill IMO.

    YOU ARE THE MAN!!! I spent all day Sunday and most of Saturday googling and chatting with generative AI, trying to quiet my r730xd, which was pegged at 100% since doing some firmware updates. I had previously found the ipmitool command to reduce the fan speed manually down to 33%, which worked for my situation, but I got a wild hair to go and update my BIOS and IDRAC firmware, and after reboot, the fans went back to 100%, but this time it ignored my command to reduce back to 33%. The key that I got from your list of commands was the one to ENABLE MANUAL FAN CONTROL!!!!!! I used this one, and now, after a day and a half of listening to that jet engine running and not being able to use my office because of the noise, I have it back under control. Thank you so much!!!!!

      @Warning56kb  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MACMASTER01 You're very welcome! The only real catch is that the fan speeds will stay at that RPM the whole time independent of load. So, you just have to build into it what you think the 'sweet spot' RPM is so it'll never overheat.
      I'm wanting to make a similar video soon using RACADM where you can upload a script to the server and actually have a customizable RPM profile based on temp.

      Awesome! And you're very welcome! Situations like that is exactly why I made the video. I might be preaching to the choir, but depending on how stressed your RAID card is be careful not to go too low on the RPMs. CPU temps can display as fine, but without RAID card temp reporting, too low of flow can cause seemingly random drive related issues. Just an fyi I wished i'd added to the video.

I was able to lower it all the way to 20% and the max CPU temps are hitting 45C under heavy load testing and the GPU's are hitting tops 75C, which is totally acceptable in most situations and my home lab setup. • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kwb1714 that's the one and only caveat with this method of full control... the fan speeds always stay at what you set them, regardless of CPU temp or load. The fans will go through their cycle at reboot, but lower back to the percentage you previously set.
      There are ways to set your own custom fan speed ranges based on temp/load, but it's pretty lengthy to explain. Was wanting to make another video some day covering that.

    • @Warning56kb
      @Warning56kb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The fans do not adjust with usage when manually set. When you set the desired RPM you'll need to account for CPU heat generated with your anticipated CPU workloads. I'd recommend loading the CPUs to the maximum anticipated workload while manually varying the fan speeds with IPMI tool to see what the minimum required RPM would be. If you have a very low ambient temp, that goes a long way with being able to keep the fan speeds low.
