  • Join us for an early lunch in Nuremberg, Germany as we eat Nürnberger Rostbratwurst (Nuremberg Sausage) unique to this Bavarian city in the heart of the old town at a restaurant specializing in this dish (Bratwursthäusle). German bratwurst comes in over 1500+ different varieties which is more than all of the different types of cheese you can find in France. They take their sausages very seriously and exact configurations of the Nuremberg bratwurst must be exact. Overall, it was a great meal and we recommend this place highly.

Nürnberger Rostbratwurst - Eating German Sausages in Nuremberg, Germany Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well good morning from Nuremberg. It is shortly past 10 in the morning and why yes I am drinking beer already because this is Germany and this is how we do things. So let's have a sip.
    Cheers to you. Brost.
Anyways, today we're at a really famous restaurant here in Nuremberg to try a specialty dish. We have come to Bratwursthäusle to try their Nürnberg Bratwurst. So glad those German lessons paid off.
Oh my gosh. Yeah. So basically that is a Nuremberg sausage right? Yes.
And this is what it looks like. The food is already here. And it is cooked right in the middle of the restaurant. It is an open kitchen so you can watch them prepare it.
We got to watch them do that. Yeah, and it is six. Six to a plate. But you know what?
It usually comes in 6, 8, 10 or 12. And you can get 3 different side dishes with it. We ordered sauerkraut. Yeah, and then we also ordered an extra side of potato salad because we couldn't make up our mind. They both sounded so so good.
    Over here.
    Yeah.
And you can also just get it with horseradish.
And we've got some mustard at the table. So yeah, we just ordered one portion because I mean I just had breakfast maybe an hour ago. I'm not that hungry I think we can share this.
But yeah, we're going to dig in.
So we've come a long way for this very special sausage. Yeah. So what makes it so unique?
Well what makes it so unique is that it is basically its configurations.
It has to be between. Configurations? Isn't that mathematical. Between 7 to 9 centimeters. Yeah. And it weigh between 20 to 25 grams. Yeah. These are not small. You cannot deviate from that. Oh no. Because then it is not authentic. Exactly.
And apparently it is also seasoned with marjoram which isn't a spice I'm really familiar with. I'm not quite sure what it tastes like. Time for that very first bite. Yep. In he goes.
The famed Nuremberg sausage. Will it disappoint? Wow. No? No. No.
    It is good?
That is one of the best sausages I've ever had. Like that is just so good. Yeah? Yeah.
It is greasy but it is also tender, it is flavorful. It is just like checks off all the boxes of being really good. Ooh. Man, I can't wait to try it too. It is so nice and I thought six of them might be too much but because they are this small and because we are sharing them I'm almost thinking maybe we could have ordered the 10 or 12.
Maybe we'll come back for seconds. Maybe we'll have to come back again.
So going in for my first bite. Let's see how it tastes. I'm going to have it on its own first.
And let's put some mustard, some zenf I believe. Also we should mention the name of this sausage is protected. So it can only be a Nuremberg Bratwurst if it is from Nuremberg.
I was actually reading an article yesterday about this that said that basically there are over 1500 different kinds of sausages in Germany. There is more different kinds of sausages in Germany than there are cheeses in France. Woah! So yeah, we should do a sausage themed road trip maybe?
I'm not sure if we'd survive it but uh isn't that so good?
This is part of our Travel in Germany video series showcasing German food, German culture and German cuisine.

If you like to know: There are 2 different stories behind the size of the bratwurst. 1) The size is supposed to be as long as a finger 2) A few hundret years ago they sold them on the streets at night through the keyholes, so they had to be small.

Oh my god. Out of Nürnberg there are Thüringer Bratwurst also need to know. Beginning from Bamberg you come closer to Thüringen. Recommend to go to Bamberg too. And in Regensburg we have the Wurstkuchl too, with similar sausages as the short ones in Nürnberg. Audrey, you are reading German very good! Apfelstrudel, yes. You should come to Weltenburg where you can drink the beer from the oldest (monch) brewery of the world, too. The dark one is the standard there. You must try. May be you can see it elsewhere. And in Bamberg there is the Schlenkerla beer, a smoke beer need to check out. Greetings from Regensburg!!!

If you need any hints or anything else around Bavaria feel free to ask me. One nice place sometimes I go to vacation is Sylt, at the most northern position of Germany. Total friendly people there and "always a journey worth", as we often say in Germany for some trips. You should check that out in any time.

mhacker1812 Yes, by train. Westerland is the target city, or car (car is taken by train shuttle, or ferry from Denmark), or by plane. There is an airport too.

I resided in Nurnberg in the late 1980's. I frequented the stalls in the Christkindlesmarkt to the local neighborhood gasthause (bed & breakfast). "Drei im Weckla, bitte." In addition, the sauerkraut there is also different. It has a dark juice and special spices. I miss it so much. I also miss having this with a nice pint of Patrizier or Tucher (local brewery beer).

Best sausages in the known universe. The marjoram is but one of its secrets. Don't use mustard, though; it's plain wrong (though it's acceptable if you're getting three on a roll out on the street). Good call getting both sauerkraut and potato salad!

There are 3 basic Sausages, I think I heard you say Bratwurst if so it is made with Pork, Bockwurst is made with Pork and Veal and Weisswurst is Veal. Most people eat them with Senf (German Sweet Mustard). Most places they are also about 3 times thicker and a little longer. My mum used to make Apfelstrudel when I was a kid. We normally had Custard with ours so the Vanilla Sauce may be Custard

Well, def all the nice sausages, if you in Nurnberg try "Schaueffele", if you are going to Swabia (Stuttgart or Lake Constance area) try "Maultaschen" (super yummi dumplings). In Berlin "Koenigsberger Kloppse", in Hamburg "Labskaus"". So many dishes from so many areas. Difficult to tell. I doubt that Nürnberer have to come from Nürnberg as you can get them all over Germany and I am sure, just like Frankfurters do not have to come from Frankfurt.
Even Mc Donalds offers Nürnberers some time a year for a limited time. They call those Nürnburgers. 3 Sausages in a bun, they are rather good too

+ Alex Rajcevic You can get them all over Germany but they are all produced in Nürnberg. Uli Hoeneß owns a factory in Nuremberg which produces them for Aldi and McDonalds.

So, better then expected so it seems, is always nice, isn`t it?
Perhaps one should check his stereotypical attitudes, especially when one comes from the English-speaking space.
Why do Canadian, American men have trouble handling fork and knife?
The price smells very much of tourist trap. ;-)

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos
I think my favorite to grill is Krakauer bratwurst
(In most cases its 90% pork)
So it doesnt have this strong meatflavor some sausages have but tastes more like grilled bacon or grilled ham.
I think it goes great with sweet sauces like ketchup or cocktail.
As a un-grilled sausage i just love Wiener Würstchen
I get delicious ones at every weekly market for around 1€ eating it on the go....yum :3
