I'm truly amazed at how much the looks of the entire room has changed with the extension of Wind River canyon. WOW! The motivation you find to accomplish so much in a month should be bottled and sold! Another stellar job this month and thank you for the ~30 minutes of viewing bliss! Until next time my friend....
Great update Mark and for me I like the length of the video. Really busy month and loads achieved. As for the Wind River Canyon, that is going to be one awesome piece of model railway/ railroad, fantastic, I’m so looking forward to seeing that come together! I also really enjoyed all the other segments Mark, always so interesting. Can’t wait for the next update, cheers for now, John
Thanks John! When the canyon is finished, it will probably look like a giant version of one of those old styrofoam tunnels we put over the Lionel tracks when we were kids. 😀
Busy month Mark! Have always loved the format. Telling us everything you've done I think makes us feel like we are doing it right along with you and don't miss a thing.

More great work on the layout! I have those Walthers heavyweights as well, but they seem to have derailing issues. Someday, I need to fix that. Hope yours don't have the same problem.
Hi Jeff, I sure hope mine don't show derailment problems. Derailments are one thing I won't tolerate. If something derails and I can't fix it within a few hours, it comes off the layout.
WOW!!!! I am totally amazed at how much a fellow at your age and in your condition could get so much done. Maybe you should ask the guys what other projects to do, as that seemed to spur you on very well. haha My, that backdrop looks real good. You did a Great job, considering the help you had that day....... or lack thereof??? You have certainly done a FINE job since the last update video. I knew you could do it. Thanks for the great video!!! Looking forward to coming down next year.
Yeah, pretty good for an old guy, right? With the help I had on the backdrop, I'm surprised it hasn't peeled off and hit the floor! 😁 Looking forward to your visitS next year as well as the two more this year.
Well...... it's getting dark pretty fast so I would only have 4 or 5 hours to get to mess up your layout. I need more time to do it right. haha. @@mapruitt
I bought those heavyweights when they first came out. I agree that they are great looking cars. The one thing I did find out was that they will find even the tiniest flaw in your track work and derail.
@@mapruitt I didn’t want to put too much in my first comment. But, before you tear up your track work carefully work a car through the trouble spot. I have 32’ & 36’ curves which were supposed to be more than enough for the cars, but I had to do some modifications on the underside of the cars with a hobby knife to get them to run smoothly through the curve. Hopefully you’ll have better luck. One last thing. If the cars are set up for lighting , the trucks may bind up on the metal lighting pads underneath the car body and they have to be removed before the car runs smoothly.
@@tczephyr3665 Thanks for the tips. My radii are all 30 inches or larger except for one spot right by the Casper roundhouse, where it's about 29 1/2 inches, and Himes curve, which is 28 inches. The cars have gone back and forth around the roundhouse okay, but that's about as far as I've taken them. It will be a week or two before I get to those cars, but I'll need to test them thoroughly before my next Ops Session, so I'll run them all over the layout to see how they perform before then.
Looking sweet, Mark! We need to get you back on Trackside Live! Dave is going to be with us on Sept. 30th so maybe you could come on the first part of November? Keep rollin'! ...Claude
Thanks Claude! I'm looking forward to Dave's spot on Trackside Live! Oh man. I just realized I should have mentioned it in the video. Maybe I'll do a short. I'd be happy to come back on the show again, if you're sure you're that desperate...
Fantastic update!!! Love it love it love it. And I love the rolling stock updates, And I agree it can be a nice way to fill in time. I am surprised by the length of the tunnels at the end of the turn back. I imagine you will have good access from the inside, but how about a window (maybe with detailed tunnel interior?) At a point so you can see your train more? Might be cool.
Great update Mark! Rocky Mountain Drilling is looking good, and the runcam video was nice. Wind River Canyon is looking great -- especially the overall height. It gives the same feeling as when you're actually in the Canyon looking up. Thanks for the shout out on the project voting, too. I get the feeling I shouldn't hold my breath waiting for the front coupler on the Mike! I've got a BNSF SD 9 with working couplers on both ends -- would you like to borrow it? 😂
Thanks Kevin! You won't get that Mikado again - until I can address the coupler it will be relegated to run-through or transfer service where it won't need to do any switching. A BNSF SD9 would be nice! I can use it as a hammer! 😁
Thanks Bob. Are you retired? That's MY secret. Burn-out happens. I gone through it several times the past year. What gets me over it is knowing I need to have some progress to show in the next update video. That's great motivation, and something I didn't expect when I started documenting the layout build.
@@bobainsworth5057 too bad about the round robin group. The ones I was in over the years were always a lot of fun. Maybe you can find some new modelers?
Very nice, I subbed you. Let me ask, how do you like using plywood for your benchwork? Is it cabinet grade standard, or hardwood ply? Species of hardwood ply? I’ve been toying with the idea of using 3/4” Birch and ripping them down to 3/4 x 4”.
Hi, thanks! I like the plywood benchwork very much. It has a couple of advantages over dimensional lumber - it's much less prone to warping/twisting over time, and even the expensive stuff I use is only about half the cost of standard pine lumber. I use 3/4" red oak veneer plywood. It's about $95 dollars a sheet. I cut it into 3" strips, which gives me 15 8' strips (plus one thin strip). There's also a couple of disadvantages to the plywood - it takes me over an hour to cut the sheet into the strips, using a Kreg circular saw guide, and because screws don't hold well in the edges of plywood, I use 2X2, 2X3 or 2X4 (whatever I have on hand) cleats so I'm screwing side rails and cross joists through the plywood face.
@@mapruitt Excellent, glad to hear about warpage issues, or lack thereof. Where do you find it for $65, a box type store like Lowe’s? Or, local lumber yard? With the prices, and lack of quality of the dimensional lumber is what lead me to look at plywood instead. I got a friend that can rip them on a table saw, with rollers, so it should go pretty fast. I have a YT channel, different from this I’m on, but I won’t put any links because YT deletes it. But I’ll be documenting everything from the beginning,.
@@mapruitt That’s about the price out west here at Lowe’s and Home Depot, about 95-110, remember when it was $60-65 a sheet. I figure six sheets should be plenty for now, and grab some blue foam as well which should keep me busy. I seen a short video about your being in the hospital, glad to see you are well. Being sick, let alone having to be hospitalized isn’t fun, I’ve had my fair share of hospital stays, my Mom was in for 38 days after her bout with Covid last December/January, that was hospital and rehab time, she’s doing great now thank god!
WOW, a lot accomplished!

Fantastic progress on the layout, and a great video explaining all the work!
