The CB&Q in Wyoming
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ม.ค. 2011
This channel is about my HO model railroad, The CB&Q in Wyoming, located in Casper Wyoming
2024 11 03 CB&Q V5 Monthly Update #60
This is layout construction update #60, for November 3rd, 2024, on my HO Scale model railroad layout.
In this update I talk about some small tasks I completed on the layout, a loco I dropped on the floor, several ebay purchases I made in the month, the October 22nd operating session, and how this was nearly the last update for this layout.
In this month's Cronkite Segment I talk about the CB&Q in Wyoming Version 2 in 2004.
The layout represents the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad and the Chicago & North Western Railway in central Wyoming during the timeframe 1930-1945. The layout is all steam except for the Doodlebugs that were used in passenger service between Casper and Lander. Model locomotives include Proto 2000, Broadway Limited, Spectrum and Bachmann.
The layout features Fast Tracks turnouts and fully weathered rolling stock. All mainline curves are superelevated. The layout is multi-deck with nearly nine scale miles of mainline track. One of the key scenic features is a twenty-plus foot long representation of the Wind River Canyon near the center of the state.
The layout is run by a radio NCE Power Pro DCC system, augmented with wi-fi using a Wifitrax WFD-31 and TCS UWT-50 throttle.
Backdrops are panoramic photos of the actual locations around the state. Track arrangements in most towns on the layout are based on Sanborn maps of the towns in the 1930's and 1940's. Industries, with only one or two exceptions, are representative of actual industries that existed in each town during my modeled period.
This series of videos is published monthly on the 3rd.

All of this work just to tear it down?
Well, not the way it looks now...
Glad to see you did some work on your railroad. It's about time!!! HAHA I enjoyed the video, and as always, another excellent job of video production!!!! Keep working on the Cody branch, and soon you'll have it up and running. Then you can finish the Lander Branch. That will be so much fun!!!!!
Three or four years and Cody trackwork should be done!
@@mapruitt Does that mean you're not moving?? You COULD have it done sooner if you wanted.
@@dmcry600 Yes I could, but I have a couple of guys badgering me about making changes to the layout elsewhere!!
Mark, that is why I model 1967 no steam locomotives and out of quarter drivers. I also quit buying on eBay I’ve had a lot of NIB that had been tampered with.
Hi Mark, Diesels would be easier, but steam is my thing. Other than the two purchases this past month, I've had good luck on ebay. Maybe I've just been lucky.
If you would like me to somehow send it to you, I have a picture of 5502 down here in the Joint Texas Division of the FW&D in the Teague Texas yard.
Thanks Dillon! A photo of the real thing would probably depress me with how different the BLI loco looks. 😀 You can get my email address from my channel homepage. Click on the channel description - not the website link - next to the round picture of the tracks, then click on "view email address." Send me a note and we'll go from there.
Layout looking good Mark and looks like you got stuff done, so sorry about the almost new house but I was afraid of seeing this layout start to be taken down., We can still enjoy this one for the time being., stay well and thanks for the update.
Thanks Rob! Don't know what the future holds, but I'll keep working whatever happens.
For not getting much done, seems like you got quite a bit done. Wish I live closer.
Thanks!
thanks, as usual. For operating session coverage is it possible to to set up several cameras and record the entire session? Easier to include interesting portions.
I'd like to, but we're usually using phones as throttles. Don't have cameras other than those.
Nice update. Lots of maintenance for those model steam locos mimics the prototype. :) Is your layout movable if you move?
Thanks Paul. Parts of the layout are movable. Casper was moved from New Jersey to Wyoming. I hope some of the other towns would be salvageable as well, but I'm not sure. Connecting track probably not.
lay your tape on a wedge so it faces the camera.
That's a good idea! Thanks!!
I feel your pain with the locos. I obtained 2 CB&Q brass locos from an auction. The prices were great, but neither one runs. I'm currently putting DCC in the Hudson, the mechanism works fine. Who puts 150 Amp service in a house these days? I have 200 and wish it was 250. And I only have one electric vehicle.
Hi Jeff! Apparently everyone around here installs 150 amp service now. Started a few years ago.
Very nice update !!! Wow what a difference 😊 👍👍 !!
Thanks Kraig!
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks. I did!
Thanks for the update Mark. Fascia looks great. And I am ALWAYS looking for things I put in a special place so as to not forget where they are.
Thanks Paul!
Thanks for another great update, Mark! And to answer your question, no, you are not the only one who leaves stuff laying somewhere and then not being able to find it. I have been training myself (no pun intended) to be disciplined specially when it comes to my cell phone. Take care. Scott
Thanks Scott! I haven't misplaced my cellphone yet, but I'm sure that's coming someday...
You're not the only one who misplaces items and spends long periods of time looking for them, believe me.
Thanks Jeff! That makes me feel better!
Can you do a tutorial on the changes you are making Operations Pro, I like to understand how use loads better.
Hello, I'll look into doing that as soon as I understand it better. It's a very involved process to create the custom loads, schedules and destinations that make it all work. Thanks for the suggestion!
Congrats great videos love your layout just recently found your channel and subscribed would love to have that car and have a wonderfull day.
Thanks Larry! Sorry, but someone already got the car.
Hay Mark : Losing a bowl of screws is a problem ? If you are a gambling man; I will happily swap you with the affliction of * Walking Into A Room ... Only To Be Confused As To WHY You Are There In The First Place * ? ! ( PS : For some strange reason; this affliction does not present itself in respect of ANY Train-Room ) ! Nice to see ongoing Fascia + Backboard + General progress at Thermopolis. Regards / Johnny 🤙🚂🇿🇦
Hi Johnny! Sadly, I have the problem you mentioned too. I didn't want to sound like I've totally lost it in the video, so I didn't mention that one. Thanks!
Just look at all you accomplished without my help. Think I should stay away for several months at a time. Oh wait, I won't be there to help for 6 months now. You should have the layout completed by then. However, I plan to visit for the OP Sessions, but that's not work sessions. You're the lucky one!!! How many of those cars from way back are still rolling on this layout?? Enjoyed the video as always!!!! Nice Job!!! See you at your OP Session.
Since we'll be moving next month (😁) all there will be will be work sessions for a couple of years (at least). So you won't get out of helping that easy! All those cars are still running except the three iron ore cars. They're useable but don't fit the layout so they stay in boxes (like the diseasels).
Very nice, Mark! we need you on the show again!!
Thanks Claude! And anytime you need to depress your audience numbers again, just let me know! I'm available!!
I'd love to have all the time back I've spent looking for things I've absentmindedly set down. I think my layout would have been completed by now! Love tunnel portal and enjoy your op session Mark!
SO even the best of us do that, huh? Thanks Dennis! Come up for a op session some time!
Enjoyable as usual. I’ve never hidden anything in plain sight, at least not in the past few days. PT coming along well, I may even be able to walk well one day. Thanks for doing this. The detail you provide is excellent. See.you next month.
Thanks! Hope you recover rapidly with the PT. The few times I've had to do it they helped tremendously.
You're not alone on placing screws in plain sight
Thanks! I feel better knowing I'm not alone!! 😁
Great update, and great progress! The Mike looks terrific, as do the portal, fascia and staging yard. Can't wait to see it in person later this month. And Walter, I'm digging your paisley tie! 😉
Hi Kevin, Thanks! Looking forward to your visit (BOTH of you!).
At least you found the screws… more time than not, I never find lost parts…..
It was a close thing. I was all ready to order some online, with a nice hefty $11 shipping charge (twice the cost of a pack of 100 screws).
Looks like you got plenty done Mark. Cutting, shaping, painting and fitting those panels takes time but they look great. The portals turned out good, so you got a lot done. Have a good operating session and stay well.
Thanks Rob!
aNOTHER sUPERB mONTH..... tHANKS wALTER c//////
Thanks Tom!!
I would be giddy with delight if I got even half of what you did this last month done on my layout!
LOL! Thanks James!
Those tank cars look fantastic! It's great to see the staging yard up and running! Love your updates Mark!
Thanks Dennis!
Well, I finally watched your video. It was good to see how much work YOU accomplished all by yourself!!! However, I was happy to help install some backdrop and work on the staging yard with you. I'm glad to see you now have a good camera and monitor to view the end of the yard. Can't wait till YOU install the mid-yard camera. LOL. If my eyes don't start working right, I doubt I will attempt the drive to Casper this month, so you're gonna have to probably do everything yourself. I know you can do it!!!!! I would love to be there to mess things up for you, but...... we'll see what happens. Great video by the way!!!!! I ALWAYS enjoy your videos!!!!!
Well, if you're not coming down this month, I may not get much of anything done!
@@mapruitt I might be able to come later in the month, depending on my eye situation. You built 99% of that layout without me, so I expect you can do a lot without me. Of course, you'll say anything to get me to come and help you. haha
@@dmcry600 Of course I will! At heart I'm a lazy sob.
@@mapruitt And, you're truthful about it. HAHA
@@mapruitt I already knew that.
Roy will be missed. When you watched his videos it was if you were sharing great layout ideas with a friend. I also empathize with you. From my experience you don’t get much modeling done sitting in the doctor’s office
That's a great description of watching Roy's videos! Thanks!
Everything is coming along pretty nicely Mark. 😊.
Thanks Keith!
Nifty idea about the mobile control panel! And I also don't feel quite so bad about the rats nest of wiring behind mine. 😄
LOL! That wiring gets messy fast, doesn't it? Thanks for watching!
Wow, you've really been busy this past month! Thanks for the update. That backup camera is a great idea for hidden staging. And love the new CBQ Steam!
Thanks Paul!
Nice update Mark. Panel and cameras looking good., that is a lot of backdrop and the cars turned out nice. Nice to not have medical appts that take your time and also nice to be doing better. Nice tribute to those from the model railroad community that has left us. Stay well and Happy September.
Thanks Rob! Hopefully there won't be too many doctor appointments in the next few months. Have a few already scheduled though - check-ups and such. Sucks getting old!
Great update, Mark! The staging yard looks fantastic, and should add a new dimension to your operating sessions. The same goes for the turntable at Thermopolis. It'll make running the Greybull-Thermopolis local SO much easier and realistic. Thanks also for recognizing departed icons from our hobby. Their work, and willingness to share their expertise, helped advance the hobby for all of us. RIP
Thanks Kevin! Want to be the staging yard operator for the October session? 😁
Thanks so much for sharing. I live vicariously through your videos. Sorry for the loss of your friends.
Thank you!
Howzit Mark : Great prog-gress in respect of the Staging Yard and the electronic control thereof. As previous; it is gonna make a major difference to your upcoming October OpS; as will the recent inclusion of additional Locos / Rolling-Stock. Oh by the by .... * Dave-The-Slave * is the friend that every sloth-like MR-er should demand to have at one's beck-and-call ! So until the next time .... Lakka + Cheers For Now / Johnny 🤙
PS : Much appreciate your tributes to those who have sadly passed-on. I was a Subscriber to Roy's channel and remember well his presentation that gave you that lift you mention... RIP Roy .... Much appreciate your contributions to MR-ing 🥺🙏✝️🚆
LOL! Thanks Johnny! We're going to miss you this October! Dave is a great friend. He helps me out a lot when he comes down. I just wish he'd let me help him with his railroad!
@@johnnyeveritt5695 Roy was a great guy. One thing I didn't mention is that his wife apparently died suddenly (no one said how) a few weeks before he passed.
@@mapruitt Mark, the next time you come up here, I will put you to work building fence, and then I'll show you how I build trees. There will NOT be a 3rd level added, nor overhead catenary added. You have the distinction of finishing the fence at Firestone and Jolley Propane, and building some trees to replace those store bought trees near Firestone. You also need to get up here and get some pictures of Greybull, or whatever it was you needed new pictures of. You'll have to stay till 9PM to get all that stuff done.
Hiya Johnny!!!! Hope all is well and that you are able to do some building of your railroad!!! Take care my friend!!! Cheers!!!!
I like the backup camera idea. I might have to employ that in my small staging yard and maybe inside the mountain! It's always sad when we lose people we admire and look to for guidance and ideas. May they rest in peace.
Hi Claude. The cameras work well, and they're not very expensive anymore. Remains to be seen how they'll hold up over time. A lot of guys I knew of and paid attention to died in August.
Yard is amazing. Nice of you to pay tribute to the guys that died. 👍👍👍
Thanks Fred!
Nice job, thanks for sharing. Dave
Thanks Dave!
That's the most work I have seen you do, EVER!!!!! haha Maybe I'll try that with my Yellow Dumpsters, as you refer to them. Nah, that would make you happy, and I just am not able to do such a thing!!!! See you tomorrow about 11, and then I have to leave about 1:00 so I don't drive in the dark.
That's because your eyes are always closed! We have a LOT of work to do tomorrow. Don't know if we'll get to the turntable or not. Got a new product today that we'll be trying to install tomorrow, I think.
I couldn't see any of the video! As soon as it started I lapsed into a spontaneous jig!
Sorry about that, Frank! Next time I'll look for something more dirge-like!
Mark, some of the old heads at my club recommend auto brake fluid and lots of scrubbing. That works too. 😀😀
Thanks Richard. Doesn't that also tend to take off the underlying paint?
Use Walthers Solvaset. Way faster and no need to scrub. The letter come right off and you can use a paint brush to gather up the lettering and wipe it right off.
Interesting. I'll look into that. Does it take off the paint as well?
@@mapruitt No.
@@modelrailwaybackshop Thanks.
Have you tried using IPA?
I tried IPA on a Bachmann loco, and it took the lettering and the paint off right down to the bare plastic.
@@mapruitt well, that would not be a good thing.
I really thought there'd be more scrubbing ;-D
LOL! Everybody's a comedian!
Staying healthy is number one! I have an afib heart, so I understand. Great work, and I always look forward to your entertaining videos and update on your magnificent layout!
Thanks! I have paroxysmal afib, and at least for now extended bouts are rare (last one in October 2022). Fortunately, it's not so severe that it limits my activities, but I sure have to be careful of triggers (stress being the biggest one). Hope you're doing well!
Hay Mark : GREAT to hear that once you had sussed out that Dr. Frankenstein had given you the complete wrong ( ! ) diagnosis and then by going CTRL /ALT / DEL; you have successfully reset your * Real-Time Clock * ! ✊️ ❤ Yes; wiring IS tedious and repetitive but once correctly accomplished; * Playing Trains * as guided by referenced feedback info; the reward is OpS enjoyment ! OK : Enough of the convalescing and Road-Name swapping already .... It is time to apply thyself young man ! Stay Well / Stay Safe 🤙🚂
Hi Johnny, and thanks! Going to see you again this October? 🤑🤑
@@mapruitt Altho MUCH appreciated; that is an invitation I am going to have to regretably decline with MAJOR tears in mine eyes as I will surely miss the OpS and the Band-of-Boyos ... ! 🥺
Hi Johnny!!!! Wish you could be here for the OP Session, but I understand. Stay healthy and keep moving forward with you layout and house.
We'll miss you too, Johnny!
Glad you are doing ok. Great update and thanks for sharing. Dave
