Hey Rod, I've been watching you videos for years and you have helped me so much. I'm think I'm more like you, I love spoons and spinners more than twitching jigs. I tied up some twitching jigs this year and its fun to catch coho on them, but I just LOVE it when they hit a spinner. This year I was successful throwing spinners in calmer water, especially when the river is high like it has been. Also really love your video about the floods and I'm so happy the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition exists to re-wild areas for our salmon to spawn and survive. It will be the key to sustaining salmon for many years to come. Thanks again for all your great work!
I’ve always really loved your tackle videos Rod! You’ve got to get on the twitching jig train! Personally, I like using twitching in all types of water especially moving water, you have to know your depths but it changes how I retrieve and jig, as it’s more jigging and less retrieving (let the current do the work). Anyway, it’s been a game changer this season for me. Appreciate the video!
Thanks! It's definitely difficult to let go of your favourite method to try something new when the fish are biting so much. I know twitching jigs can do magic, I've seen it done many times. One of these days I'll invest more time on it for sure. :)
I have a Fenwick coho rod 9ft 8 to 15lb.......not to fast moderate maybe..?..the whole rod flexes and its awesome.....I would always advise going a little heavier on the rod as big fish/current/Chinook can happen......using a 3000 fuego lt with 15 braid and 12lb leader

Hello Rod and knowledgeable others, would these spoons and spinners be a good match for a larger river like the Skagit? I have had very limited success this season with a chartreuse spinner, and am trying to find deeper and slower moving water to target. What would be a good way to tweak things to optimize fishing on a larger river? Thanks in advance to any who respond!
One year i was just reeling in moderate speed.. saw some shine behind it.. slowed the retrieve right down which was 3 feet from my feet and BAM Fish on! Just to do the..... AWWWW WILD. such a beauty coho though.
Got two coho this year within 10ft of my feet. One followed my spoon in all the way to literally right in front of me. I just stopped reeling and watched him gulp the spoon down, while it fluttered in the current.
Hi Rod, It appears I have been doing it right as far as technique and lures. You mentioned that you like to use spinners as well. I caught a couple large brown trout using a Mepps Flying C 7/8 oz (#5) last fall. Is this the type of spinners you have been using? I also like that you replace the treble hooks on the spoons with single hooks. I do that as well. Better hookup and easier release too.
I actually make my own spinners to customize them for what I need. I tend to make 1/8 and 1/4oz ones with a sieze 3 or 4 French blade. Here in British Columbia, we legally have to use a single barbless hook to fish in streams. In fact, yes I use a single barbless for pretty much all fisheries these days, it's just a lot easier.
Thanks for the educational video. Sometime soon I am going to pick up some fire stripe spoons for coho. I have never found a lure that coho specifically like, and I feel like it will be the one.
Yeah both the Crocs and Kohos are my two go-to lures for coho. I'm sure many others work too but if I think if you invest enough time on a particular lure and get good at using it, it'll produce for you. :)

I don't have any experience with Daiwa so can't really comment on that, but I have a few Sahara 1000s and 2500s. Before using the Nasci, I've used the Sahara as backup reels and also reels for friends to borrow. They have been great for coho salmon too. I've used the smaller Sahara 1000 for rainbow trout. No problem with mine so far in the past five years. For brown trout that size, I'd go with the 2500. :)
Fishing with Rod Thanks Rod, I have an Exage which I really like. We have a great angling shop in Scotland called the Glasgow Angling Centre. So I’ll go in and try some and see which feels nice. I think when it’s Perch the finesse reels and rods have to be really comfortable 😁 tight lines

Just picked up a shimano Sedona fI and fenwick hmx 8’6” medium action. Would you consider that a good all round set up? I’m just getting into the whole spinning game. Thanks. That should be a very good setup for it. 8'6" medium can be used for both casting and retrieving spoons/spinners, as well as twitching jigs. The Sedona, as long as it is 2500 or larger, it is big enough for coho salmon etc.

Around 15 years ago or so, Pixie spoons were the go-to's in this region but somehow fizzled away after a couple of years. I actually just got a few last year and will be trying them again this season.
I was looking for some guidance on a pepper fishing rod, I’m getting a Shimano sustain 3000 and was wondering if you had any input I want the best rod would be for my application, I’m casting 1 ounce rotators with mini squids on them from the beach here on Whidbey Island, I went with the sustain spinning for its castability, I was wondering what kind of rod you’d recommend to pair with this to get the most longest cast with the tackle. I’m using somewhere from the 9 foot, up to, 10 foot length, looking for an all-around rod for pink salmon and coho salmon. Thanks and any input you have would be great and I’d like to keep the rod under $300.
I only know salt fishing rods, not pepper ones. 😂 A good one to consider is a Shimano Technium (TNS100MH2A) 10’ spinning rod, rated medium heavy. A little heavier for coho but since you want to chuck weights up to 1oz, you’d need a slightly heavier setup.
Could you do a video on how and when to set the hook? How you tell if you're getting a bite vs bouncing on the bottom? That type of video would be super super helpful! Thanks for the great video!
Ooh that's a hard one to do, but I'm always up for the challenge. All I can say is that when you've done enough spinning, it's fairly easy to distinguish between a proper bite, a snag or even a fish that's about to be foul hooked. There are definitely also ways to to avoid snags too. I'll work on it.
Adam Bolding-Jones it’s always better to start with a short leader because aggressive fish will attack bait or lures drifting past above them. That way you’ll get less snags and fewer foul hooked fish.
Thanks for the informative video Rod! Wish I saw it prior to heading out to Vedder last Sat. We saw fish jumping where we were, but no bites (again). Been casting all wrong (rooky). Was flyfishing so should I adjust how I present my fly (use heavier sinking tip with sinking fly), locate slower waters or just give-up flyfishing on the Vedder (didn’t see anyone else doing it) and pick-up a spinning rod?
Hi Selena, so keep in mind that the Chilliwack/Vedder River is probably the hardest river to catch a salmon/steelhead from in BC. Even though its returns of salmon are pretty abundant, it is the most heavily fished river in BC. If you are just starting out, I wouldn't recommend to go with fly fishing right away (I also rarely fly fish it). Fly fishing is a lot more challenging than other techniques because you're dealing with getting your presentation down to the fish in moving water. This is a lot harder to do with a fly line than a lure or bait. This means you're limiting yourself the number of chances for the fish to see your offering, therefore the number of bites you're going to get is a lot lower. Spoon fishing is still pretty difficult, but you'd have a lot more chances. Regarding coho, don't pay too much attention to fish that are jumping out of the water, those most likely are not coho salmon but are chinook or chum salmon. They are also usually not biters. What you're looking for are what we call coho rolling or "finning" near the surface. If you are fishing in a pool, or the tailout where the current is walking pace, and you see a fish poking its head/dorsal fin once awhile, or a small swirl, those are coho, and those are biting coho! Your chance of getting a fish goes up quite a bit when you are able to find these spots. Also don't focus too much on areas where water is really fast. As mentioned before, you're looking for water that is moving at your walking pace, depth should be anywhere from 2 to 6 feet. The bottom substrate should be a mix of gravel to small head-size rocks.

@@spoonfullife Definitely don't rule out of using the fly rod on the Vedder again though, but a spinning rod would cut down that learning curve by a lot. :) One suggestion that I have is to actually try fly fishing in lakes first before moving onto rivers, that's how I started and I actually still fly fish more in lakes than rivers. It is a lot easier and you can get into more fish. Good luck with the coho! We got three more weeks of good coho fishing on the Vedder, followed by good chum salmon fishing in the first three weeks of November. :D
Thank you Rod! I have been trying to do a bit more spinning on the Vedder. This is my first year in the Fraser Valley and despite many hours on the river trying different methods I haven't had much luck... I am always concerned that I am in the wrong spot for spinning as everybody around me seems to be float fishing with roe. Am I really in the wrong spots? Or is spinning just not as popular of a method? Thanks again Rod!
Aidan, there's nothing wrong with being the only spinning guy among float fishers (check out the Facebook and Instagram video I just put up today lol). The only problem is that you have to watch all the floats in the water and time your cast right to avoid them all. This means you would not get in as many casts as you would like. I tend to avoid it and only spin fish at places where there's no one around. Good spincasting spots are also not that ideal for float fishing. I tend to look for very tight pockets around log jams etc and make 20 to 40ft casts, the retrieves are usually only a few seconds long. It's almost like bass fishing in some way, sending the lure out and expecting a bite immediately if there is a fish in "the hole". As mentioned in the video, once we get into the second half of October and more fish are in the system, they become more aggressive and will take lures more readily than now. Keep trying! :)
Everyone is always drifting roe in the Vedder. Fly rod and spincasting is where it's at though, in my opinion! i had my best coho season ever this year and not one was caught on roe.
There are waters ideal for lures throughout the entire river. These spots change regularly, it just depends on the river height. I would walk the river with a spinning rod and find them.
Love the videos and find them very helpful. Since you solicited for questions--if you were going to Kodiak Island in early September to stream fish for cohos (silvers), what would be a few lure suggestions? (Anyone who wants to answer.)

Hi Rod, would the Technium be overkill if I were to use it casually on a kayak at Deer Lake? I'd like to own a rod that will allow me to catch smaller game and salmon as well! Should I get two rods instead? Thanks
I'd say ideally, you should have one spinning rod for lakes, and one spinning rod for salmon in rivers. It's really hard to find one particular rod which can accommodate both fisheries. If you really really have to, I'd say go with the Shimano Clarus 6', 4-10lb, shown in this video. That particular rod is slightly too heavy for small trout, but works great for bigger trout, bass, pike, pink salmon, coho salmon.
I own both spinning and casting setups, I'm planning on getting a expensive combo soon. Should I get a baitcaster or spinner combo, is one better than the other?
Well doesn't that depend on what style of fishing you intend to do? A spinning setup is better than a baitcasting setup if you are casting and retrieving lures, a baitcasting setup is better than a spinning setup if you are float fishing.

That rod is rated 8 to 12lb, and personally I am comfortable using it for chinook salmon even up to 20ish lb (in slow current). Most of the rods can handle fish bigger than the rating, as long as you know how to operate them properly.
Is a longer rod necessary? I have a 6 foot rod and I've caught fish as big as 15 pounds, I've never had a problem with it and was wondering what the longer rod does?
A slightly longer rod does give you an advantage of casting and fighting. A longer and more flexible/slower rod is a bit more forgiving and really comes in handy for salmon fishing.
Hey there, would you recommend getting a medium or a fast Action Rod for fishing for salmon? And does it really matter if you are fishing with a spinnig or a casting Rod? Greetings from Germany
I think it really depends on what type of fishing you are doing. I always prefer a slow action rod to get a better bend on it when bringing in a salmon, but it really depends on what lures you are using. If I am jigging, then I would use a shorter and faster action rod like I explained in this video. If I am fishing with spoons and spinners, a slower action rod it is. If I am beach fishing with bigger lures, then I'd be using a longer and faster action rod.

That is more than ok. My favourite spinning rod for coho salmon is rated 6-10lb, but if there is a chance that you'd get into fish in the mid to high teens, I'd go with the rod you mentioned.

Happy American Yep! You certainly can use a low profile baitcasting reel with a 9’ baitcasting rod for this. The only time I would do this is when I decide to only carry one rod and still want to switch up between spoon casting and float fishing from time to time.
Hey rod. I got a new rod this year for coho 10,6 g loomis imx float rod 6-12 lbs I believe I seen a video a while ago u fished with it ? How did u like it for coho and would it hold for chinook?
Great choice! That is my favourite float rod for coho salmon. I’ve also caught chinook salmon, steelhead and chum salmon up to around 10 to 15lb. That works fine in slow to moderate flow, but you’d be pushing it in the fast current.
I have a spinning rod with a 6-10 line rating. I've been told to use 30lbs braid because it has the 8lbs diameter. I've also been told to use 15lbs braid for the 4lbs diameter. Which would be be more sutible?

Absolutely! That is a good spinning rods for casting and retrieving spoons and spinners, and you can also get away with twitching jig. 1/4oz lures are fine since it's between 3/8 and 3/4oz.

@@drodas1011 Yeah these ones in the video. Beside those, I can't give you any particular suggestions because you're not being very specific on what species you are targeting and what method of fishing you intend to use.
That would depend on the rating of the rod. If you are using a rod that's rated 10 to 20lb, for sure it is not too big. The rods being featured in this video are rated between 6 and 12lb, therefore we use a 2500 size spinning reel to go with these. There's no reason to use a 4000 size spinning reel if you are targeting coho salmon. A reel that size is quite a bit heavier and you'd get pretty tired if you are going to cast with it all day.
I always go for a 3000.....most reels it only adds a half oz or so from a 2500, usually the same reel with a bigger spool More line capacity that way for more or thicker line depending on what you want without any substantial weight increase
You certainly can if you are using monofilament. If you are using braided as your main line like in this video, then you'd want to tie a section of mono or fluorocarbon line to it.

Ooh that's a hard one to do, but I'm always up for the challenge. All I can say is that when you've done enough spinning, it's fairly easy to distinguish between a proper bite, a snag or even a fish that's about to be foul hooked. There are definitely also ways to to avoid snags too. I'll work on it.

Adam Bolding-Jones it’s always better to start with a short leader because aggressive fish will attack bait or lures drifting past above them. That way you’ll get less snags and fewer foul hooked fish.

Thanks for the informative video Rod! Wish I saw it prior to heading out to Vedder last Sat. We saw fish jumping where we were, but no bites (again). Been casting all wrong (rooky). Was flyfishing so should I adjust how I present my fly (use heavier sinking tip with sinking fly), locate slower waters or just give-up flyfishing on the Vedder (didn’t see anyone else doing it) and pick-up a spinning rod?
Hi Selena, so keep in mind that the Chilliwack/Vedder River is probably the hardest river to catch a salmon/steelhead from in BC. Even though its returns of salmon are pretty abundant, it is the most heavily fished river in BC. If you are just starting out, I wouldn't recommend to go with fly fishing right away (I also rarely fly fish it). Fly fishing is a lot more challenging than other techniques because you're dealing with getting your presentation down to the fish in moving water. This is a lot harder to do with a fly line than a lure or bait. This means you're limiting yourself the number of chances for the fish to see your offering, therefore the number of bites you're going to get is a lot lower. Spoon fishing is still pretty difficult, but you'd have a lot more chances. Regarding coho, don't pay too much attention to fish that are jumping out of the water, those most likely are not coho salmon but are chinook or chum salmon. They are also usually not biters. What you're looking for are what we call coho rolling or "finning" near the surface. If you are fishing in a pool, or the tailout where the current is walking pace, and you see a fish poking its head/dorsal fin once awhile, or a small swirl, those are coho, and those are biting coho! Your chance of getting a fish goes up quite a bit when you are able to find these spots. Also don't focus too much on areas where water is really fast. As mentioned before, you're looking for water that is moving at your walking pace, depth should be anywhere from 2 to 6 feet. The bottom substrate should be a mix of gravel to small head-size rocks.

@@spoonfullife Definitely don't rule out of using the fly rod on the Vedder again though, but a spinning rod would cut down that learning curve by a lot. :) One suggestion that I have is to actually try fly fishing in lakes first before moving onto rivers, that's how I started and I actually still fly fish more in lakes than rivers. It is a lot easier and you can get into more fish. Good luck with the coho! We got three more weeks of good coho fishing on the Vedder, followed by good chum salmon fishing in the first three weeks of November. :D
About how long is the 12lb flourocarbon leader that you use and what knot or tackle do you use to connect that with your mainline?
Usually around 4 to 6 feet. I use an improved Albright knot to connect the two.
Thank you Rod! I have been trying to do a bit more spinning on the Vedder. This is my first year in the Fraser Valley and despite many hours on the river trying different methods I haven't had much luck... I am always concerned that I am in the wrong spot for spinning as everybody around me seems to be float fishing with roe. Am I really in the wrong spots? Or is spinning just not as popular of a method? Thanks again Rod!
Aidan, there's nothing wrong with being the only spinning guy among float fishers (check out the Facebook and Instagram video I just put up today lol). The only problem is that you have to watch all the floats in the water and time your cast right to avoid them all. This means you would not get in as many casts as you would like. I tend to avoid it and only spin fish at places where there's no one around. Good spincasting spots are also not that ideal for float fishing. I tend to look for very tight pockets around log jams etc and make 20 to 40ft casts, the retrieves are usually only a few seconds long. It's almost like bass fishing in some way, sending the lure out and expecting a bite immediately if there is a fish in "the hole". As mentioned in the video, once we get into the second half of October and more fish are in the system, they become more aggressive and will take lures more readily than now. Keep trying! :)
Everyone is always drifting roe in the Vedder. Fly rod and spincasting is where it's at though, in my opinion! i had my best coho season ever this year and not one was caught on roe.
I am just asking weather you use any weights like split shot when using spinners?
I don't add any other weights on my line when using casting spoons and spinners.

Great vid. Rod. Where is the best location to cast lure in the vedder. Lower/middle/upper section.? Most people said near the mouth.
There are waters ideal for lures throughout the entire river. These spots change regularly, it just depends on the river height. I would walk the river with a spinning rod and find them.

A 2500 or 3000 size reel would be good to go with it, like the ones featured in this video, that's what I use.

Dont add weight to spoons, it messes up the action.

I'd say ideally, you should have one spinning rod for lakes, and one spinning rod for salmon in rivers. It's really hard to find one particular rod which can accommodate both fisheries. If you really really have to, I'd say go with the Shimano Clarus 6', 4-10lb, shown in this video. That particular rod is slightly too heavy for small trout, but works great for bigger trout, bass, pike, pink salmon, coho salmon.
I own both spinning and casting setups, I'm planning on getting a expensive combo soon. Should I get a baitcaster or spinner combo, is one better than the other?
Well doesn't that depend on what style of fishing you intend to do? A spinning setup is better than a baitcasting setup if you are casting and retrieving lures, a baitcasting setup is better than a spinning setup if you are float fishing.

That rod is rated 8 to 12lb, and personally I am comfortable using it for chinook salmon even up to 20ish lb (in slow current). Most of the rods can handle fish bigger than the rating, as long as you know how to operate them properly.
Is a longer rod necessary? I have a 6 foot rod and I've caught fish as big as 15 pounds, I've never had a problem with it and was wondering what the longer rod does?
A slightly longer rod does give you an advantage of casting and fighting. A longer and more flexible/slower rod is a bit more forgiving and really comes in handy for salmon fishing.
I would thing Okuma would have a rod closer to what you like . But then again I see your a Shimano Guy !

I think it really depends on what type of fishing you are doing. I always prefer a slow action rod to get a better bend on it when bringing in a salmon, but it really depends on what lures you are using. If I am jigging, then I would use a shorter and faster action rod like I explained in this video. If I am fishing with spoons and spinners, a slower action rod it is. If I am beach fishing with bigger lures, then I'd be using a longer and faster action rod.

That is more than ok. My favourite spinning rod for coho salmon is rated 6-10lb, but if there is a chance that you'd get into fish in the mid to high teens, I'd go with the rod you mentioned.
We get coho usually from 7-12 pounds but the odd 15 pound and 30 just hoping my medium 7 foot rod will keep up lol

Yep. It's all single barbless hook for our river fishing.

Happy American Yep! You certainly can use a low profile baitcasting reel with a 9’ baitcasting rod for this. The only time I would do this is when I decide to only carry one rod and still want to switch up between spoon casting and float fishing from time to time.

The spinning reels which I use, usually Shimano 2500 size, the gear ratio is around 5:1 (Shimano Nasci) to 6:1 (Shimano Stradic).
Hey rod. I got a new rod this year for coho 10,6 g loomis imx float rod 6-12 lbs I believe I seen a video a while ago u fished with it ? How did u like it for coho and would it hold for chinook?
Great choice! That is my favourite float rod for coho salmon. I’ve also caught chinook salmon, steelhead and chum salmon up to around 10 to 15lb. That works fine in slow to moderate flow, but you’d be pushing it in the fast current.

I have a spinning rod with a 6-10 line rating. I've been told to use 30lbs braid because it has the 8lbs diameter. I've also been told to use 15lbs braid for the 4lbs diameter. Which would be be more sutible?

Absolutely! That is a good spinning rods for casting and retrieving spoons and spinners, and you can also get away with twitching jig. 1/4oz lures are fine since it's between 3/8 and 3/4oz.

Is a 4000 size spinning reel too big for a 9ft rod?
That would depend on the rating of the rod. If you are using a rod that's rated 10 to 20lb, for sure it is not too big. The rods being featured in this video are rated between 6 and 12lb, therefore we use a 2500 size spinning reel to go with these. There's no reason to use a 4000 size spinning reel if you are targeting coho salmon. A reel that size is quite a bit heavier and you'd get pretty tired if you are going to cast with it all day.
I always go for a 3000.....most reels it only adds a half oz or so from a 2500, usually the same reel with a bigger spool
More line capacity that way for more or thicker line depending on what you want without any substantial weight increase

Why can't you just tie the lure directly to your main line?
You certainly can if you are using monofilament. If you are using braided as your main line like in this video, then you'd want to tie a section of mono or fluorocarbon line to it.
