A wonderful review. I've loved this moody little film for years. It isn't your typical horror film, more of a dark melodrama, but Foster's performance is incredible, especially for a teenager.

Did you have as much trouble finding a DVD as we did? This is one of my ex-wife's favorite movies because of Foster's performance, and when I finally found the movie it was on a bare0-bones DVD double bill with THE HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE - which we tried to watch once, and gave up on.
PS: After writing that, I happened across a Kino Lorber Blu-Ray, which unfortunately has no special features with Foster (as the episode notes, Foster does not remember this movie fondly, possibly due to a creepypasta producer who wanted the film to have more nudity...with a 13-year old girl!). OTOH, both the director and co-star Martin Sheen talk about making the movie....

I've got a fond history of this movie as I watched it during a sleepover and was drawn into the story of a young teen trying to hold all her secrets together (my friend thought it was dull). Years later, I got to pick my new daughter's middle name, so I went with Emily (after Rynn's favorite poet). Years go by and she had a baby of her own...on Halloween. Anyone near Southern Maine should visit Marginal Way, as that's where they shot a few later scenes with Rynn and Mario tossed Mrs. Hallette's keys. The blu ray is pretty solid as well.

Don't know how this will sound to many, but this is to me, if not the best, one of the best performances by Jodie Foster. Sure, people know her from Silence of the Lambs, Contact, The Accused (all of which are great movies) but this one right here. What a script, what a character Rynn is. You would never see such a movie nowadays. Funny, how we've gone from the peak of cinema (70s) to the downfall of cinema so quickly.

Yes, that's a very interesting suggestion - that could absolutely work - but as there are unsavory rumours about his proclivities in real life cf - as his divorce papers from Denise Richards revealed, it would be too much and in extremely poor taste. But an off- Broadway play.....hmm.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For the equivalence of a million dollars, and get a Jodie Foster and Martin Sheen, even early in their successful careers, I don't think it would be difficult.
But, it would get studio interference, or reshoots, because a crowd reacts poorly, and it would ruin it. So, your right.
I was maybe 7 or 8 when I first saw this, and I hated Sheen so much. His performance was disturbing, and I was crushing on Jodie Foster hard.
There were so many excellent movies, in the 70s, that aren't on many folk's radar.

Norrin Radd just go into it knowing it's character driven as opposed to action driven and very "stagey". Most of the movie takes place in the house, especially the living room. It definitely feels like a filmed stage play. If you can go with that I think you'll enjoy it.

Yeah I usually hate slow and talky horror films (if you can even call it horror) but every thing about this movie made my skin crawl, maybe it was sheens convincing go as a creep or the detached kills but everyone in this movie just felt sinister. Very heavy atmosphere without the cliche dark and stormy night in an isolated whatever.

It's so weird I literally just watched this! I enjoyed this movie but I don't think I'd have called it a horror flick. There were points in the story that I thought might push the line but they were actually very innocent and sweet. I wanted the kids to be happy together, and I was glad this girl who had been forced to be so grown up could find someone who it seemed would look after her. Martin Sheen was a total scuzzball in this, but he had to be to show just how grown up Jody Foster's character was. Thanks for covering this one.. it was cool to learn more about it.

I scourged the web several time for information but there's precious little about it (I could never get my hands on those interviews where Foster claims to dislike the movie). Another good recommendation Cecil! I've heard of this one, but never seen it. I will definitely check it out now. Got one question though. I wonder why they only filmed one scene, that was actually in the house, & the rest on sets?

Preety good 70s entertainment. I could've sworn I'd seen it as kid, but nope.
Solid performance from Foster as well as a young Martian Sheen who does a great job playing the creepy villain, Frank.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I'm going to sub & see what other recommendations you have.

The career of Jodie Foster is a lesson, how a level-headed, talented, smart person can thrive in something as evil as the entertainment business, despite starting her career as a toddler. She's is the greatest actor ever.
Its such a great underrated film
