As a working railroader, I simply cannot understand the fascination with foamers wearing vests. Does it make them feel like a railroader if they do? Do they think "I will wear a vest that way if a train sees me along the tracks he will know it's a guy photographing trains and he's OK." Sometimes I think they wear then so they can get the engineer to blow the horn when he sees the vest. Foamers and railfans in general...LOSE THE VESTS! It does nothing for the train crews except make us think "Who the hell is this out here? Did I miss something on my bulletins? Is this a contractor out walking along the tracks?" Leave the vests to the people who are required to wear them!
For sure. They look stupid for most occasions. The only times I have ever worn a vest while Railfanning where times I was also on a NARCOA motorcar excursion and I was on an active railroad. Otherwise it's just normal clothes
Swiss railfan here, i have a vest on and i also talked with swiss train drivers and they always like, when they see railfans with vests on. You actually need a vest, when you are railfanning, and drones are not allowed anywhere near the tracks
probs just the way it is. Safety does obviously take a important precedence and while it's cringe it's also nice that people are visible. Most of the time it's probably just a weird attachment to the vest like wearing your favourite coat or pair of shoes. I see no actual harm in it. I have more problems with the coomers who run up and down platforms with cameras
When I was in fourth grade, I got donated a CSX vest. I only wore it twice. One for watching CSX in my car, the other for a school event I still have the best in great condition. I treat it like it was a gift Thanks to the conductor that gave me a csx vest (Disclaimer, I never asked for it. I'm an operating volunteer at the Illinois Railway Museum. Earlier this year, I was conductor on a caboose train on Diesel Weekend. There was a good number of people at Seeman Road, and all westbound trains were stopping to board and discharge passengers at the halt there. For reference, all locomotive-hauled trains on this railroad have the locomotive facing east (except for when we run the CNW bilevels, because commuter trains always have the locomotive facing away from Chicago). The conductor has to control the shove with a tailhose (combination brake valve and whistle) and call signals for the engineer. There is a gravel strip next to the tracks just west of Seeman Road, giving access to the turnout and signals at East Johnson. There is a gate across it to keep unauthorized vehicles from heading down that way. I've just given my flag signal to the engineer to shove west and I hop onto the steps of the caboose. Some high-school kid starts screaming and running alongside the train and cuts around the end of the gate _passing between the gate and my train._ I start panicking, thinking this little jerk is going to trip and fall against the side of the car, or even under the wheels. I lean off the steps and yell at him (I've found that I can really make some noise if motivated, with one of our steam firemen asking me to be "less terrifying" when telling people to get off the tracks). And I bellow "HEY! COOL IT!" as I roll past into Johnson Siding, and the other little jerks start laughing. There's a clip of it on TH-cam somewhere or other.
Meh i barely get out anymore since i started working for amtrak im just sick of the drama that happens when something good comes and the foamers taking pictures of you from a bridge at 2 an in the morning is something else

I guess it’s whatever floats your boat. I personally don’t see the excitement anymore with modern day railroading but my kids do. It’s what they see. I grew up with Geeps and SD40-2’s. I personally used to like the variety there used to be but those days are pretty much gone. I’m also around equipment 5 days a week (25 year conductor) so I personally don’t care to see it on my off days. As for dangerous driving, trespassing, or standing on the rail? That’s a totally different thing. Lastly, I noticed one of the comments on a post was by Tom Horvath. I used to work with him. If you see this Tom, Hello! I hope you are enjoying retirement.
I wonder if i look weird as when I'm railfanning because I don't have any cameras. On the other hand I'm usually sitting in my car in an adjacent parking lot so they probably don't notice.
As a crew van driver, alot of the guys I talk to here on the Thayer Sub get a kick out of some of these railfans (by and large, most of the railfans here in my area, are respectful of the railroad and get their shots while at a safe distance) and are pretty chill with them, unless you do some of the stupid stuff mentioned in the video, then they tend to get a little irritated, lol!

JOEY ROBINSON YOU HAVE BEEN FEATURED!
Risking your life just to film in portrait, bra-vo 👏👏
Wow after watching this video, Facebook Foamers/Railfans are on a different level of craziness. lol 😂
8:00 as a Chicago Southside foamer, that is why I stay away from Chesterton
Facebook user: Looks at a picture or post and sees a railfan holding a scanner, they think that they're talking to it.
BNSF 1458: Have you even used a phone before💀💀💀
3:28 bro risked jail to help the crew 💀
I have a never-thought-of fact: ALL railfans are foamers on some level, some are calm and chill, others are loud and overreactive, but all are still railfans!
Edit: except for the railfans that purposefully derail trains or cause problems intentionally, they are NOT NORMAL
I hope you are enjoying retirement.
i railfan away from popular railfanning spots for a reason bro 😭 and its cuz of the idiocy seen in this video
I wonder if i look weird as when I'm railfanning because I don't have any cameras. On the other hand I'm usually sitting in my car in an adjacent parking lot so they probably don't notice.
Now that I saw this, I think I’m ready to reconsider railfanning.
You've somehow managed to get poor engineer Michael canceled on Facebook lol
Facebook in my area are funny and stupid at the same time lol
Railfans on discord:
We ain’t going there 💀
Facebook + foamers = foambook :3
Serious help
@@SilkyTrains erm what
I AINT GUILTY I JUST POST MY CATCHES 🚂🚂🚂
Bro cooking up Bangers🔥🔥
He’s standing on the railroad tracks the vest will make the train stop but miles away
My dad’s car goes 0-60 in 6.50 seconds
But when we’re chasing a train it’s 0-60 in 0.5 seconds
We need a part 2, I mean, there’s literally an entire Facebook group dedicated to the idiots in this hobby.
As a crew van driver, alot of the guys I talk to here on the Thayer Sub get a kick out of some of these railfans (by and large, most of the railfans here in my area, are respectful of the railroad and get their shots while at a safe distance) and are pretty chill with them, unless you do some of the stupid stuff mentioned in the video, then they tend to get a little irritated, lol!
surprising the facebook group in my area is actually normal
No pls no i don’t want NS to derail out my house
A fellow Idiots of Railfanning group member. Glad to see ya on there.
0:33 I live next to train tracks so it’s possible for you to send NS to derail😭😭😭
I'm glad to not see myself on here
If rod harrell is on Facebook that should have a video of its own…
