Glengarry, Perth, 1970s. When the estate was developed, land purchasers could specify what patches of native plants on the land they wanted preserved from being bulldozed or trampled. I was about ten years old when we got our house and land. I can remember only four or five houses in our street that still had big trees and 'Blackboys' (as they were once known) in their front yards/gardens. I still remember the one at the entrance area of the Sorrento Primary School. It was over six feet tall and branched into two heads about four feet up. I was small enough, as a nine-year-old to climb it. But I always got roused on by the teachers when I did. "A whipsnake will get you!", they'd yell. I also got in trouble for eating those Banksia buds that were like bubble gum, and licking the nectar from the flowers.

Where did you get all those mature grass trees from?

On parts of the Penisula Development Road that runs from Lakeland to the tip of Cape York, there are bands of bushland that are predominantly grass trees. I used to drive a bus on that road, and was always spellbound by the bush. The grass tree areas stretched North and south from the highway along some ideal growing position that was only maybe half a kilomtre wide. In one area, you travel along some flat country dominated by tall termite mounds. Then you enter a slight rise in the country, crossing a long eroded ridgeline, and the grass trees grow all over it. It's an almost sudden change from termite mounds to trees and grass trees everywhere.

I know of no plant or tree that enjoys a drought. I bore water everything and they respond with growth, flowering and health. Watering also brings in bird life which feast on parasites and bugs , a total 100% win win outcome

Hey mate I have a cluster of 3 in my yard, the trunks are covered with years of dead sticks around the bottom, is there a way to remove it to make it look like yours? Its stuck on so hard and thick.
