Potted grass trees do not have their roots established in the ground. They cannot source their own water and nutrients from the earth. Keeping consistent moisture in the soil while they are in pots helps them continue to grow.
They don’t have to be soaked or flooded. If the soil is moist, that’s great.
Depriving them of water while they are in the pot, forces them to rely on the store of water they have inside their “trunk”. They can do this for a while, but it’s an unnecessary stressor. If you want them to thrive keep some moisture in the soil.
