I love both versions, but this one really hits the spot IMO. The lyric changes had meaning, I'm sure (to me they really do. It's a lot more polished, there's meaning). The vocals stand out more. There's a lot more power behind this. They did amazing.

right i felt like the original was overstimulating and a little too chaotic
what i’ve noticed is this:
when the demo said “i’ve walked into your dagger for the last time in a row, something something something in the snow”, the rhyme between row and snow is very clearly telegraphed. it’s a good lyric, but it’s a little predictable. but not having that rhyme and having adrienne talk about the snow out of nowhere puts more magic in the metaphor, because instead of adrienne looking for a word that rhymes with row, she’s making an earnest comparison to snow that isn’t telegraphed clearly. idk, i like both but there’s some real heart in this one

I'm saying this as somebody who didn't hear this song before the full release, and who has been looping this version for hours, and I do think that the fish and gills line is a cute line, but I love how it sort of smooths out the whole set of rhyme there when it drops the rhyming and leaves that line out. It feels so smooth suddenly, after building, which feels like emotions are flowing.
Of course it's all about personal preference!

I never realized how much pain my relationship is causing me until i listened to this song and realized how much i relate to it, he doesn't hold me but never lets me go, he changed me and then wanted me to be like before, he turned my whole world around but told me to stop feeling so much, he wants to be alone but doesn't want me to go away, He ignores me completely every single day but I can't do the same, I'm in pain, I'm living a nightmare, I'm with a man that maybe once loved me but doesn't act like he does, i feel like in every word and detail i put my whole heart yet his constant ghosting and stoicism makes me feel like I'll never be enough... And the worst part is that i love him, i don't want to leave because i still hope and pray for the day he treats me with the love i treat him. This song helped me realize how delusional i sound

We live separately but since school is starting soon and today was the get your stuff day, I saw her glaring at me from across the gym. Me n her share no classes so that's an upside.
But I still give props to your for dealing with it, going with it, although it's so wrong and the wrong choice your so so strong for enduring it. In my honest opinion you should think out and write down some way to tell him that he needs to do better subtly or to just cut them off. It's better to be held and for them to never let go, than it is to not be held but to never let go.

And till the last minute I hoped she would show me I was wrong and that the wait was worth it; But it was not, I ended up seeing how messed up and hurt I was for trying so much.. Then I had to leave and she blamed me, saying I was abandoning her, but, she abandoned me first a long time ago

i think the Colbert version will stand on its own for a lot of fans as the definitive version of this track (the flute!) so i like that, rather than try and replicate the TV performance, Big Thief recorded it with a different interpretation. the best group working right now by a long shot!

im so in love with this version. but, i dont think you can have the release without the demo, or vice versa. i admit, the demo is more appealing to the ears with the flute in the back. but i think the two versions have two different meanings. the demo is about being IN a bad relationship, and the release is about finally ENDING it. "im the fish and shes my gills" means SHE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT HER. but in the release, she is accepting the fact that she cant go on like that anymore, because she's always been "empty till she fills, alive until she kills". she's addicted to her in the demo, but shes ending it in the release. she can finally live without her, the abuser is no longer her gills. she is done "walking through her dagger" over and over. no more "rows" or "in a row". its over. shes done. it is THE *LAST TIME*. instead of sounding sad, and lonely, and craving for her abuser to just love her the right way like she did in the demo, she is now angry, and exhausted, and she screaming about how she is "falling" out of the relationship, she snapped and she cant deal with her anymore. the flute's absence shows the absence of admiration or care for her abuser because she doesnt wanna keep the relationship going, she wants to leave.
yes, the demo is objectively better, but the release is more powerful, and meaningful. and we need them both together.
