    No one can be correct all the time & mistakes happen. The nature of camera reviews is for specific brand owners to be a overly sensitive about their own gear. I get hate mail daily for simply finding performance differences, but in the end the vast majority of my subscribers are positive and supportive. Keep fighting the good fight Tony!

      Micheal please ignore the haters, Your reviews are very thorough and therefor a great source of information.
      Tony has faster uploads often a bit less thorough But therefore he can cover more.
      No need to back down Tony the points for a neutral buyer were legit. That said Buying used instead of new is always difficult due to depreciation.
      The current concerns are legit though. (but then like you said it's not like Pentax could have done a better job with their current lens line-up)

      I agree with you. I subscribe to your channel as well as Tony and Chelsea's channel and a few more besides. I am no fan boy of any camera maufacturer, I just appreciate good cameras and lenses. Over the years I have owned 7 Canon SLR/DSLR's, 4 Olympus SLR/M43, a Pentax Spotmatic F and a Practica Nova 1B. I currently own a Nikon system and an Olympus system. All were great cameras for me at the time of ownership, but none were perfect. I consider my D500 the best camera I have ever owned but would never get worked up if a reviewer criticised it. I can never understand why certain people feel the need to be offended then become abusive just because someone writing or producing a review does not agree with them. I am grateful to all of you who provide free reviews and tutorials and treat them as a guide - not something set in stone.

    Hi Tony,
    You might not read this, but I'd like to thank you and to apologize as a Pentaxian.
    I started in film with Pentax, then Canon and back to Pentax (K3). You are totally right in everything you said, although some of the comparisons you made are from the point of view of what you already do/know. You might already know this, but I wanted to share what I think you might miss and why some people get so idiotic about. Using Pentax is sometimes like when you start using a different system, like Windows to Mac or to Linux. You tend to do things in the same way you did or that you'd expect it to be in a specific way. In Pentax your style will be different for many things and you will overcome both the AF problems and the lack/deficiency of side/surrounding AF points (which could/should be better, no doubts). Video is a NO-NO (no way around that one)
    On thing that I value and I cannot find in other systems is the primes/ltd/pancake lenses of Pentax + WR capabilities. I travel a lot and with the 18-135mm, Ltd 15mm and Ltd 70mm I have a very light weight kit that can produce almost professional results. Yes, sharpness isn't perfect, but I CAN take everything with me, worrying about rain/snow/dust and miss any action (in a competitive price range)... I do not understand the hype of sharpness and bokeh that drives this world nowadays. Hopefully Pentax will renew the film Ltd to the current standards or upgrade the DA to full frame soon... The K-1 was long overdue, I think will deliver what it promises and intends, but Pentax should have paved the road a bit better taking into consideration it's great history of lenses.
    Anyway, your video has helped me to decide and my K-1 should be arriving soon.
    Please, please, please... do not stop reviewing Pentax systems/lenses due to some retarded people. We really appreciate your channel and you're a real PRO!
    Thanks again!

    This is the best Photography channel in my opinion i don't always agree with everything but that's personal preference which is part of the point of the videos, i feel like this is the least biased channel that has the best connection with its viewers, iv never seen a channel that replies to as many comments (iv seen 2 year old videos with replies in the last day which is crazy) and responds in this way in videos it shows a great deal of care and effort and i think that shows Tony and Chelsea truly have the buyers interest as their biggest concern, thank you for that you've helped me make choices and save money which is GREATLY appreciated :))

      You do not need to lick anyone boots: everyone has a bias, but in this case Tony did not prepare himself for the homework about Pentax.
      How many homeworks you skipped in your life? It's simple as that, because Pentax DSLR was the subject he was never really interested in, but it intrigued him ONLY because everyone in the class started buzzing "FF". Only because of FF Pentax is suddenly on people's radars.
      Now he has learned a thing or two, and, hopefully, will benefit from it.

      Why are you only responding to those who praise you? thats not what you claimed in the review follow-up. Personally I belive you forgot to mention the K1 as a street-shooter camera witch is what lots of Pentaxians do. Easy axess to all controls, excellent picture-quality, high iso performance and so on. Many of the worlds most famous streetshooters use big chunky dslr´s. Other than that I will also say that you normally know what you are talking about. ( but the Hasseblad review you also jumped the gun before the camera was avaliable)

      @ericlowenbach8663 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hans Kristian Hedenby have you read the comments? He has responded to a number of critics here. You seem to be reading a different page. Also, the K1 is not a special camera for street. You may love using your K1 for street photography, and that's great. But it's not special among SLRs for street.

    • @Hasse.Holliday
      @Hasse.Holliday 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not read all of them. No time for that. The K1 is exellent for street. Most photographer (professionals) refuse to use small bodies. K1 is better than the competition because of the quick axess to controls not because of the pic. quality.

    Hi Tony.
    As a moderator for Pentax users at Photo.net I want to say how much I have appreciated your reviews. Generally the Pentax users on our site at Photo.net are quite a bit more civil than what was expressed here. Just to comment, I think I have been more educated by your reviews than any other source on-line as they seem well evaluated in controlled and side by side analysis. As an "Advanced Amateur" I appreciate that I haven't the technical knowledge to evaluate lens at this level. As a professor (and a parent) on a budget I think pretty carefully about my purchases. I have thought about the K1 for landscapes and astronomical images. I have wide legacy glass, a 20mm f2.8 A and a Russian Fisheye (15mm) as well as two dozen other lenses (including limiteds) up to a 600mm f5.6 A. The lenses have been magnificent on APSC bodies (K3 and K5IIs), but I have been hesitant to go for the K1. If I cannot be convinced that the 20mm f2.8 or other wide angle lenses I already have are not going to deliver truely wonderful landscapes edge to edge it isn't likely that I'll get the K1 as the idea of purchasing another lenses (like the rebagged Tamron) that will ultimately support the best features of the K1 is not in my budget. I still have a daughter to support for college.
    Again, many many thanks for the time you put into your videos. As a scientist myself its hard to overstate the need to be able to have viable controlled tests to be able to bring meaningful data to these evaluations. It's a pity that you have run into such a negative response and further even more unfortunate that it becomes imperative to have to address such comments and invest more time into those comments. Still your efforts are well appreciated by at least one life-long Pentaxian, or Pentaxer, or Pentax user, whatever.
    Cheers and Thanks,
    Doug

    I'm a Pentax shooter and own the K-1, mainly for the reasons you mentioned in this video, Tony. I have many lenses capable of covering a 36 x 24mm sensor (around 40 actually. Primes ranging from 15 - 500 mm of various quality and usefulness) and some of these are very special assemblies of glass. These are not designed to win pixel peeping contests, but designed to render in a unique and pleasing fashion. As you said, there is more to photography than lines on a sharpness graph. I disagree with your reasoning about the lack of lenses and the usefulness of the existing arsenal, and I said so in the comments to your original post, but I hope I did so with respect and grace. I think you made light of some of the unique features of the K-1 while over emphasising some of the weaknesses, but I understand that Pentax does things differently than the mainstream, and these features may not be of obvious weight to even seasoned and reasoned reviewers who have not had to the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Pentax 'way'.
    Some of the utterly disgraceful comments which followed your review are more than unfortunate. Deplorable, rude and a reflection on the nexus between decreasing education standards and the easy access to faceless opinion on the internet. (that's my real name in the box above, BTW) I do not think it is unique to Pentax shooters, to throw out horrid comments, and so disagree with those who characterise this activity as an attack by Pentax trolls, but it is deplorable nonetheless. Having said that, I don't think your 'Attack of the Pentaxians' intro is exactly designed to sooth the waters, as amusing as a reference to 50's B movies may be. But hey it's your site, do as you wish :)
    No argument from me that Nikon and to a lesser extent Canon has a better offering in the AF (especially tracking) stakes, but I think the K-1 is more than adequate compared to almost every other camera on the market, and especially at the price point. Is it a 1dx or 5d? Nope. How many Canikon cameras can focus down to -3 ev? and how much do they cost? Would I think of the K-1 as my go to 'spray and pray' camera? Nope. I have a K-3 @ 8.3 fps for that. I get that the Nikon D810 (at 50% more) and the twice as expensive Canon (6D? I get lost with Canon's innumerable offerings) has better tracking. Fair enough, one has to get something for the price premium. One could also argue that these heavily more expensive cameras fail compared to the K-1 in terms of some features (which you did Tony, but failed to mention some, and spent less time on the pluses than the minuses in this area. IMH*O) No bias is inferred here, but I wonder about familiarity.
    *humble or hubric is interchangeable here. :)
    I readily admit I have nowhere near the experience with alternative systems and also admit that you, Tony, know a lot more than me about Canon and Nikon et al, and photography overall, but I submit that there are others who, through use and experience know more about the Pentax system than you have shown. I simply disagree with the logic behind the dismissing of the Pentax array of newly released DFA lenses because you found the DFA 70-200 softer at the edges at F/2.8 than the Nikon alternative. I find it odd that it was not mentioned that it is also found on other sites who measure lens sharpness that the Pentax variant is sharper in the center (where it counts wide open) than the Nikon. Does this mean that you will in future discount the Nikon lens array because this one lens is not as sharp in the center as the Penton (*TM) alternatives?
    I get the point Tony, that you are relied upon by people who look to your vids to influence their buying decisions. I just disagree (respectfully) with the premise of your argument WRT lens selection and the price/value curve.
    I now have a serious question which both illustrates my ignorance of the Canon lens range, and will hopefully help fill it. How many of the dozen or so wide angle lenses you lists as being an option for Canon shooters are better optically and technically and artistically than the array of various wide angle lenses made for Pentax k mount, and are still usable. Of course it must be understood that Canon abandoned their previous mount, whereas Pentax has kept the K mount for 40 odd years. How many of the bakers dozen of these listed lenses are cheapish optics and overlapping , confusing choices?
    (Please, like Tony requested, I'm after polite factual discussion here. Trolls and fanbois please avoid.)
    Finally, I find it odd,Tony that you have never had the chance to try any of the 'three amigo's on either apsc or 24 x 36 format. I would have thought these legendary collections of glass would stir the interest of one interested so much in photographic excellence. No less than Leica had enough respect for the FA43 to have it made in a Lieca mount.
    Politely and respectfully Tony, I disagree with some assertions. I enjoy your style and your commitment to education. I hope you find the time to answer.
    Wayne

  • @BenjaminKanarek

    I totally agree with your critique...I wrote the following on DP Reviews.
    Agreed. As a past pro Pentax user of the K10 up to the K3 the two glaring flaws in my opinion and based only on my professional needs has always been the AF and the limited amount of fast AF prime lenses. The very small concentration of AF points in the centre of the viewfinder doesn't help matters either when wanting to focus on the models eye which must either be forced into the centre of the frame, reducing usable pixels in the final published works or reframing which is slow cumbersome and not accurate especially when using a fast lens. What I suggest Pentax does is what Nikon has done with their D800/810 and allow for a 5:4 crop option which replicates 90% of most magazine formats and bringing the upper focus points closer to the eyes of the model although not perfect, still close enough. However, having a few more focus points in the upper quadrant would be ideal. If Nikon in their 5:4 crop mode, could just give us one more row of vertical focus points, it would be perfect beyond words. But as is, I can generally get close enough to the crucial focus point desired.

    • @nomorokay
      @nomorokay 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Kanarek Have you not tried selecting one of the outer focus points and locking in that one? I do this for most portrait sessions, going all the way back to my MZ-S, then to the K-5, and now the K-3. When the camera is held in portrait position, it’s easy to line up the selected outer focus point with the model’s eye. It hasn’t even been necessary to use the outermost focus point.

I really value that you take the time to factually and honestly highlight all the strengths and weaknesses of each individual camera that you review. The viewer can then decide whether a particular camera would suite his or her particular needs based on your very thorough advice. You give great value for money advice regarding choosing the right gear for those of us who do not necessarily have loads of cash to spend on that ever-ellusive-perfect-camera we all crave to own. Whether it be Canon, Nikon, Sony or Pentax etc. Your K1 review helped me reafirm my decision to save up for the Pentax as it suits, not only my style of photography, but my pocket too. Thanks for mentioning what bang for my buck the K1 would mean. You and Chelsea do a great job on your channel. I hope that the few rude remarks you suffered will not hinder your reviewing more Pentax gear in the future. Your KS2 review for example was just as enjoyable to watch and very informative. Pentaxians are, for the most part, sensible and friendly folk who are like kids in a candy store now finally able to rave about the new full frame that Pentax has to offer. And like most exited kids, some of us can sometimes get carried away by what we say online. Thanks again for producing such a great channel for all of us to enjoy!

    Thank you Tony. I do appreciate your honest reviews. Let me, without any kind of aggression, suggest some further corrections/suggestions (yes, with Nikon and Canon you do have a much larger selection of lenses). Sigma is, as far as I am aware, still manufacturing modern lenses with Pentax K-mount, such as the 35 mm f1.4 Art lens (perhaps this is an exception, I am honestly speaking not sure). In addition, you will find the following full frame (modern - digital era) lenses for Pentax at and below 24 mm:
    * Irix 15 mm f 2.4 Blackstone (weather sealed)
    * Irix 15 mm f 2.4 firefly (also weather sealed)
    * Pentax f 15-30 mm f 2.8 (weather sealed)
    * Samyang (Rokinon) 14 mm f2.8
    * Laowa 15 mm f 4 macro
    * Samyang (Rokinon) f 3.5 24 mm TS tilt-shift
    * Sigma 20 mm f2.8 EX (yes, slightly outdated, but by no means a bad lens)
    * Samyang (Rokinon) 12 mm f 2.8 fisheye
    * Samyang (Rokinon) 24 mm f 1.4
    I expect that all except the Pentax lens are also available for Nikon and Canon. I still think there is a larger selection for Pentax than most reviewers will care (or know about ?) to mention. I don't even have a Pentax FF camera. But I wish I had.

    I'm a Pentaxian and have been for years, (yes I admit it's a disease I can't shake). I thought your first video was a fair and honest assessment with some good points and well done. Yes there were some minor errors but we are all human and anyone who states they know everything about every camera system is not being honest. Being a Pentax user since the mid 80's the K1 is the obvious choice for me but for those looking to just get into the DSLR market then it's a great video showing strengths and weaknesses of all models. My love for Pentax is their primes and since I'm and avid outdoors person I love the ruggedness and weather sealing that Nikon and Canon can't match, especially for the price.
    I also think your follow up video is great and spot on. Sometimes people just need to get over it and stop showing anger behind a keyboard. You and Chelsea keep up the great work and video's and don't give up on us because not all Pentaxian's are vicious. :-)

      +TheCameraStoreTV That's because it was, and I'm not a Pentaxian. You can win by being respectful instead of painting a caricature as a stereotype of everyone using a brand. A few years ago I took a job supervising a "team" of people who communicated with each other primarily via text, both via IM and in chat rooms. I'm using the term "team" loosely and incorrectly, because I've never seen a group of people who supposedly worked together be so rude to each other. It seems to me that the partial anonymity of texting tends to make people who are probably reasonably normal adults in normal life act like adolescents.

Ha ha, I will be the first to admit Pentax is far behind in many areas but I also like their out of the box thinking from time to time. Just saying, I own a pentax 55mm f1.8 lens(~50 years old), and it is great. It renders colour beautifully . Not gonna lie, even though it is a smc (super multi-coated) lens, the flare is still kinda bad (but beautiful in a way) and the sharpness wide open at 100 percent is not excellent (even on a 16mp camera), but I think for any exisiting pentax users with pentax's old film lens, the k1 would be great, but I agree with you, if a person is looking to just start investing in a full frame system, the pentax k1, though outstanding, is not their best choice just because of the film lens. Just adding to your point. Good vid.

    Great responses to the comments on your very thorough, thoughtful review. "Strawman" and hyperbolic comments, nastiness, etc are results of the perceived anonymity of the Internet. It's a shame really that users of a particular brand get so defensive over critiques of their preferred hardware. I've been a Pentax user for quite a while. They've been great for me. And I am well aware of their shortcomings. I am also an amateur. And I'm "budget minded". Hence I've made a conscious decision to choose a brand that fits the budget and accept that there are some limitation. I'm also an artist. So sometimes the limitations are assets.

    Tony, your reviews are the ones I take more seriously. It's good that you now review Pentax cameras and lenses. Your insightful observations and well informed criticisms help us in the buying process. My personal interest is in photographing landscape and architecture, and when permitted, portraits of my family and friends, so your review gives me the reassurance I needed to consider buying the K-1 and two Tamron derived lenses. I'll make do with (and modify) my DA* 60-250 unless something better comes up. I can also use some DA and D FA primes in FF (plus the rest in crop mode) so am quite happy with that for the time being.
    I am sorry that some Pentaxians have posted unkind comments, although I also understand that those who have invested in older Pentax lenses might feel upset that their collection is not technically state of the art. As you pointed out, off-center sharpness wide open is only one consideration in buying a lens, and sometimes other factors matter more, so they can take consolation from that.
    It's good that you take time to respond to comments and have put this video together to explain some contentious issues. I hope that you are not put off by trolls, they are everywhere. I am a Pentaxian, and place high value on your reviews and guidance.
    Keep up the good work.

    tony, i was one of the people who replied to your previous video, and you replied back within minutes. as i said, i own the k1 and i'm loving it. i just wanted the point out that pentax does have more than one lens, but canikon does have a larger variety of lens available. i think you're doing a great job. its a shame you have to address to people bickering and crying over things.
    as a k1 owner, i do agree that the k1 is not the greatest camera out there. it almost does any/everything i want it to do, thus it works for me. at the end of the day, thats all i should care about. i got my camera to enjoy taking pics with...not so i can yell at others on youtube or internet with...

    Hi Tony, thank you for all the great content you, Chelsea and your team create.
    As a Pentax user myself i feel quite sad about all those bad comments.
    The Pentaxian is not used seeing their brand getting any spotlight and i think a few cannot handle it.
    I myself love the system. Not for its modern lens selection, its action capabilities or video, but for the comfort i find in its ergonomics, everything fits my slow working approach. The system is not fast, but it is reliable in nearly every situation.
    You did great. Pentax is (for the moment) a niche system and you reviewed it fairly. Comming from your way of shooting (you said it yourself in the portrait section - fast, lots of pics,...), Pentax is not the best system.
    I hope you don´t abandon reviewing Pentax products only because some idiots are stupid. I like to get some thoughts from a system outsider.

    I've been using Pentax since the K-7 and I'm so tired on reading angry comments from other pentaxians if someone criticize Pentax i any way. It's a fact that you don't have the same amount of lenses if you use Pentax and if Tony forget some lenses from Samyang /Rokinon or something else don't matter at all. Hi Tony and Chelsea, I just wanted to say that I think your videos are wonderful! You strike a great balance between entertaining and informing your viewers, and I feel like you really do care about the consumer. I'd highly recommend someone check out your channel for gear reviews because you don't inflate or oversell the products you examine, you do provide pros and cons, and you give people the information they'd need to buy the camera that fits them - and their shooting style - best. I'm currently shooting with a Pentax K-50 and I'm thinking about getting the new K-70 when it comes out. I know neither of those cameras would be great for shooting something like sports, but thanks to your reviews I could find a camera that would be. Also, thanks for the free buying guide, that was really nice of you guys to give away!

    I appreciate that you quote used-prices throughout, not like some more marketing-focused channels that always seem to say "surely you can afford list price, right? Wink wink nudge nudge"
    Time to market matters, and the K1 is brand new, while other offerings can be found used. If you want to be super thorough, you could make a short follow-up video once Pentax FF starts showing up in the used/grey import market. Thank you for making this video and your calm and humorous response! Nice joke to end on!

    Dear and admired Tony, sometimes I think that impolite people don´t deserve your kindness, they just wouldn´t understand. There´s so much in your videos to thank you for that I wouldn´t know where to start. If we had to get objetives articles about lenses an cameras testing we would have to pay lots of money and that´s no secret. People know it, so let´s be less "impolite" and more grateful. I realy love your videos, I watch´em over and over because there´s tons of objectiv and technical info.
    So again, dear and admired Tony...thank you for your hard work and your free and high quality videos.
