That's perfectly fine by me, The used stuff is much more affordable.
For something that's such high quality, they are really ignored by a lot of people.
GL it is an amazing brand. I changed my jazz bass for the l2000 and it is way more versatile and easier to play. I think it is ignored because
1) Honestly the GL logo and headstock is horrible (just cosmetics... but it doesn't look "cool" so people ignore it).
2) Those instruments appeared later so their tone is not as iconic as the tone of the first models as it doesn't appear in most of the classic records.
Better for us, i can get them second hand for a really low price.
I like the fact that none of his companies ever competed with each other his Music Man designs didn't compete with Fender and G&L didn't compete with the Music Man. He brought something new everywhere he went he never went backwards always something new.
Yeah, I'm, uhm, certain the bean counters at Fender weren't feeling any sting from losing sales when they saw Louis Johnson slapping a Stingray, when he otherwise would have had a Fender, if Leo had stayed in retirement, like CBS expected. While the designs were different, they were all competing to be the bass that someone bought instead of the others.
L2000 was Leo's final gift to the bass world.

I think the G&L JB-2 was Leo's final bass that he created before he passed away in 1991.

I really liked the 5 string G&L I checked but I'm still going with Stingray. The G&L had a really nice neck but I felt like the Ray suits my personal playing needs better.
The BEST BASS Mr. Fender ever made was his FIRST! Everything else flowed from that........without the 1st design there is NO G&L or any damn thing else.

I agree! That G&L is wicked!! I like having knobs and switches to mess about with the tone. That helps a lot depending on the kind of music you’re playing, venue, dealing with ego maniac guitarists, etc. 😎👍🏽🔥

I was fortunate enough to interview several times George Fullerton the "G" of G&L who had been with Leo since 1948 and was involved in many of the designs. I asked him what Leo felt was his best work in both guitar and bass. When it came to the Bass he didn't even hesitate and said Leo believed the L-2000 was his finest work in a bass. He added both he and Leo were immensely proud of their work at Fender, products built for Musicman and G&L. Had they never sold Fender to CBS, the evolution of the instruments would have become what G&L had to offer. That said, his opinion was he and Leo in guitars were most proud of the Stratocaster as it became an ICON unto itself and the love players had for it on stage or in a studio was stuff of legend and it's acceptance was world wide.
L2K is without a doubt, the most tonally versatile of them all - in a sense that it has the most tonal options built in with the controls and the two MFD humbuckers. That said, I had all of these basses, used them all in several band settings (vintage rock, hard rock, funk rock, funk punk) and my favorites are the P bass and the Stingray. They're my GOAT without a single shred of doubt.
L2K's problem for me was that it's a bit of a marmite creation. Lots of tones, sure, but not an instantly recognizable tonal character, super hot pickups (I had to cut both bass and treble controls all the way for it not to light up my GK RB preamp clip lights all the time, and that was with the preamp/buffer off) and it just didn't quite sit in the mix the right way for me. I tried all the pickup/preamp/tone control combinations during the band practice and my band mates were like "yeah alright, that bass sounds pretty cool". I thought "meh, it was ok with the front pup only, doing a pseudo P bass thing, but still underwhelming to me honestly and I prefer a P bass for that". Then I pulled out my Stingray, and we played another song. All of my band members were shocked and reacted "OK that Stingray absolutely blew the L2K out the water". It didn't fare better for my vintage rock outfit either, but my Precision with flats rules supreme there and nothing will ever top it.
I tried to like (and love!) the L2K, but it just doesn't seem to do anything masterfully for me. Swiss army knife bass? Maybe a jack of all trades, master of none for me. I went and listened to every single possible band I could find that had a bass player using an L2K. Helmet sounded the best probably, but that thing is overdriven to hell, and honestly you could use any good passive Fender or almost any other bass to make it sound just as good with that grit. Skunk Anansie - couldn't find any live clip where Cass Lewis' Stingray didn't sound massively more interesting and funky to me compared to his later L2K (he's using a custom made bass now, I forgot the name but it's tonally closer to a Stingray copy). Those are just 2 examples, but I searched for anything I could find and was never impressed (even Tom Hamilton sounded better with a Stingray in the 70s to me).
As for Leo saying L2K was his best bass invention - Leo lost hearing pretty bad at that point (read up the stories), and he was always a tinkerer at heart. I'm the biggest Leo fan for sure, and I practically don't play a bass if it's not his creation (why I wanted to love the L2K), but it's pretty obvious that's what he would say because: A. it's where he was working at that time (and it was his final work place) and B. he was a tinkerer and L2K was filled to the brim with tonal options and it was his latest baby (or one of).
Maybe it's just that I prefer a Precision and Stingray tone, sure, but I really wanted to like L2K a lot, and not in a way for it to emulate any other bass tone, but for it to shine with its own character. I just didn't find there to be much character to be honest. As always, your mileage may vary.
Id say the musicman was his best bass. But all of them are iconic

Love the bridge design of the G&L, so much better than those Fender bridges..
Objectively, yes the Fender bridges are very outdated pieces of bent steel plates that don't do much. But if you're going for that vintage sound having less sustain might be what you want. And they're pretty easy to set up, so that's nice. I don't mind them sticking to those old bridges.
The fender bridges on the pros and elites are in my opinion the best bass bridges ever. They look so damn good
Fun video but you guys missed the biggest technical advancement in the history of those basses: The bridges and saddles. Along the way fixing many issues and increasing sustain.
Great video guys! I find it awesome to see all of these Leo creations placed side by side, and of course the G&L getting some of the love its always deserved but hasn't always gotten. My L-2000 is such a beast I could never part with it, but these are obviously all incredible.
I've got a G & L Tribute Series L-2500 Bass and I would never change It for another Bass :)
My G&L L2000 is the best bass I've ever held, it's the perfect "Fender" bass, with the switching and tone sculpting you can easily get a P a J an M and its own unique tone
Amen brother. And what is more is that it can achieve even the Musicman tone. With one bass you got all Leo's great work!

I recently did some custom mods to my G&L I added a coil splitting switch to get even closer to J and P bass tones and a forth pot and they’re all concentric so I have an individual Vol, Bass, Mid & Treble control for each pickup, and a detuner on the E tuner. so yeah it’s a monstrous beast of tonal options and has lasted me nearly 2 years as the bass I play almost exclusively, with constant gigging, touring and recording in multiple bands across multiple genres, without missing a beat, I expect it to last many many more years and the whole thing told with all its customisation barely cost me $1200aud ($800USD/€700/£650)
I don’t think I’ll ever need to change the stock pickups and hardware because they’re just that F*kn good
The G&L is like comparing a modern car to a vintage car. The vintage has style but the modern is usually better in every way.

Yeah dudes,, great jams . I'm learning more about playing just watching you guys... And the bases are a fine line up of all Leo's great lifetime of work. What a gift Leo gave to the world, all the Motown sounds, all the Classic rock bass tones, and the 80's and 90's still it's the Leo Fender bass tones that shine through. And of course the L2000 is the culmination of the "Fender Sound". Recorded many albums on the L2000, and that tone... it really holds up.
I wish I still had my G&L. Some girl sold it for heroin. Too bad.

Great video again. Nice bit of history. I'm a jazz bass owner due to having small hands. Love the sounds of all of these though. Bought myself a Sterling Sub bass for my 40th birthday last year and now really enjoying the active EQ. Leo Fender seemed to get it right every time.

I’ve got a 77’ Jazz,A 79’ Stingray, A 1980 Sabre, A 95’ Stingray 5, And 2 US G&L L2500 5 Strings (Fretted and fretless).All of them are keepers.Beautiful
The split coil Precision Bass is the best. Except for the rare Musicman or Jazz, a good Precision has the most full, satisfying tone of any bass.

I have a Jazz, a P-Bass and a G&L L2500 and 90% of the time I play the G&L, just because it's like a swiss army knife. From deep and dark to bright as neon, it does it all.

The extremely flexible tone sculpting on the Music Man is impressive. With some serious fiddling about you get to almost sound like a P bass -- the ultimate goal.

8:29 Leo Fender remained on the pay of CBS as a consultant after they took over in 1965. He remained on the pay until the early seventies before he set up the Music Man company.

Great video! Love to see that you've got G&L instruments now. You should check out some basses like the SB-2. Leo's biggest innovation at G&L in my opinion is those MFD pickups (used in a lot of G&L guitars and basses). The SB-2 neck pickup is the angriest P-bass style pickup I've ever heard
FWIW, I prefer P's because I want to think about music, not a lot of tones, on a gig. I want a good basic tone, with no brain work. I can get a lot of variations (enough) with my hands. I may stay there or I may add effects. In any case, I don't want a lot of variables and to go searching on the gig. I may decide to get more punch with finger position or I may boost EQ on my amp. I don't really want 50 places where my tone might fall down. I definitely want to avoid failure points - as few batteries as possible.
Just because you can change the tone, doesnt mean you have to. You can spend almost as much time playing with the tone of a P bass as any other.
Right when I bought my G&L Tribute and sold my Sterling. The timing.
I bought a Sterling by MusicMan StingRay Short Scale Bass and it's pretty awesome. It has a three-way button for parallel, series, and single coil in a 4-string bass, neodymium humbucker, and a push/pull volume boost with 22 frets. Even though it was made in Indonesia it is sent back to the U.S.A for set-up and inspection. I'm happy with my purchase!

Best thing about G&L is that the "Tributes" are 1/4 the price of the MIA made and come with the exact same hardware, electronics, pickups, and wood choices. Fender and Musicman cut too many corners on their overseas made instruments.
Actually the Sterling by Music Man basses, Squier VM and Fender MIM or MIJ are phenomenal values and really superb instruments. Just picked up a Fender MIM P Bass and it's gorgeous in quality, sound and playability. The Sterling Sub Ray 4 I used to own was also really nice for a little amount of money.
I'm a big fan of companies who put the "good stuff" in the cheaper models. Warwick Rockbasses for example come with freakin MEC pickups. AMAZING! That being said the Squier Classic Vibe Basses are very cool too.
What does 'Phenomenal Value' mean? Musicman Sterlings are not S.U.B. basses, they are made in USA and cost the same as a Stingray. You pay $1700 brand new for 1 pickup and no passive mode. Fender MIM and MIJ basses cost around the same as a G&L, but you're still getting a very basic instrument, no preamp, no series/parallel switching, no humbuckers with coil split option. I can get extremely close to a Jazz bass sound, a Precision bass sound, and a Stingray sound with my G&L, and there's still a lot more I can do with it. S.U.B. basses and Squiers are made with cheaper hardware and different pickups from their more expensive counterparts. How does any of that count as a 'Phenomenal Value'? You can use personal anecdotes all you like, bottom line is you're paying the same price or more for an inferior instrument.
EpictheEpicest Sterling by Music Man is the Indonesian brand. They cost around half the price of a Mia but have almost the same quality.
Again, "Sterling" is both the Indonesian brand, and a model of Musicman bass. The model has slight differences from a Stingray but is still MIA and costs $1700. The Sterling line features the Ray 34 and the S.U.B. bass. The Ray 34 IS made of the same materials and hardware as the regular Stingray and costs about the same as the G&L, but still, only one pickup, no series/parallel switch, no passive mode. And the S.U.B. basses use different hardware and pickups.

I have all of those Basses, and all MIA's except the G&L which is a Tribute made in Indonesia and there is not really any difference between a Tribute and a MIA. They are great sounding Basses that cost a fraction of what a MIA would cost you. The one being demoed is a Tribute which gives you some idea.
Wow, this would be really tough to choose. I would say the Jazz Bass considering the time it was made. No one can doubt the original P bass. All good, what a great man.
J Bass will always be my favorite . The amplifier is a big part of the sound as well !
When CBS bought Fender from Leo, there was a 10 year non-competition clause and a 5 year commitment as a consultant for the CBS owned Fender that Leo agreed to.

I know better than to watch these. I know I should be practicing and developing the sound I want through my playing, not through fantasizing about a new bass, amp, or pedal. Yet here I am coveting the next thing that I do not need to buy.
Had American version of all basses shown but the one I regret selling on is a early 80s g & L l2000 with swamp ash body and thick slab rosewood board , a thousand sounds in that instrument and all excellent, gutted,great show lad’s

Over the course of this channel you guys have featured many pedals that have been modded and I was wondering if you would consider doing a show on the processes and thoughts behind why you would mod a pedal and which ones take better to been modded.
I own all four of those basses and I'm glad they picked the G&L L2000, as it is amazing how many sounds you can get out of it. It can sound like a Precision, a Jazz, or a Stingray depending on how you set up the EQ. Ironically Andersons no longer stock them.
Strange eh? What is going on with G&L in the UK? Nobody stocks them. Luckily I bought a L-2500 Tribute at Andertons blow out price and It's so good I wish I'd bought another. Would love to have a CLF research L-2500 in Lake Placid Blue.

My vote would go to the short-lived Roscoe Beck signature Fender. I sold mine a few years ago and continue to regret it to this day. They're super hard to find and I keep looking for one. That was a killer bass with some amazing pickups that gave it a unique tone.
I had a teal green five string RB. It was great. Also regret selling it. I had an SB 2 and an L2000 that I also miss. I am a guitarist that basically bought basses to record my own parts instead of hiring a proper bass player . haha. Bass is tougher to play than most guitarists think. My first bass was an American standard Jazz. I went from the Jazz to the SB2 and I thought it was a big improvement.

These basses are all like any other siblings that share the same daddy...they're all going to have their own appearance and personality, but share and exhibit some characteristics of their dad. They may all look and sound different, but you can definitely recognize who their daddy is. They all sound great because they all share DNA.

I've just picked up a G&L M 2000 Tribute. Stunningly versatile but more accessible than the L 2000. Basically, it doesn't have the toggle switches, the controls being, volume, blend and bass, mid, treble, cut/boost. The build quality is amazing and the instrument plays like butter. I love it!
It was a hard choice for me, but I went with the L-2000, however I do like that the M-2000 has cut AND boost, AND mid control AND a blend knob, the dealbreaker was that it has no passive mode.

Wonderful presentation with historical content! My complements! My choice is a USA G&L M2500. This is over exotic custom builders for the value. I can purchase two G&L's for less than the cost of one Roscoe or MTD. Get two, one fretted and one fretless!

All Leo's designs and ingenious developments are fantastic, but it was at his last company G&L, that he perfected all of it. G&L all the way. Have had their SB-2T (Fullerton) for the ten years, and I can't play many of my other basses since. It just feels, plays and sounds better than my '74Ric, Welch RJB67, ATK750 and single coil-PB401. L2000 about to be ordered! ...and it'll probably result in selling the rest of the herd. Thanks for this overview that puts it all into perspective.

Hi! First of all, congratulations for the channel!! Specially the “all about bass” section. I want to ask you something. Is there any remarkable difference between a bass with maple fretboard and the exact same bass with rosewood fretboard? I was told each wood has its own nuances in the sound, but also I heard that maple fretboards have problems in order to stay in tune and, because of that, they are more difficult to adjust the intonation. Is that true?? Thank you so much for your videos and greetings from Spain!!

Having owned P Bass, J Bass, Stingray, Sterling and L2000. I gotta say that Leo got it right with Musicman. Having said that I prefer the Ernie Ball era 3 band EQ and top load bridge.
Leo Fender set the standard with all the basses he designed!!! He was one of the first, if not the first, music industry innovator!!

I owe a G&L Legacy American and Fender Stratocaster 40th anniversary American. Nothing beats de G&L. Plus I adore my G&L Bass guitar L2000
I have an American made G&L 2000 research bass and Stingray and Sandberg panther and the G&L is the easiest and loveliest to play.
All around £2000 mark and I’d take the G&L if I had to keep one.

I think the L-1000 (passive, single pickup - one of the first 500 made) may have been first. I had a 1980 model for maybe 20 years or so. The MFD pickup is still just about my favorite in the world.

I think it's the P-bass with the split coil humbucker, late 50's to late 70's. I've had 60's and 70's Jazz's and P's, original Stingray, EB stingray 4 and 5, G&L L2000 and L2500.
