Are DIY Windshield Repair Kits Any Good?

  • Today I perform a rock chip repair on the Tesla Model 3's windshield using a $13.99 kit from Amazon. I then compare the results against a previous professional repair.
I purchased the kit and supplies for the repair myself, and I am not sponsored or endorsed by the manufacturer of the repair kit.
Overall I found the repair kit to work well, though not perfectly. The center of the rock chip filled in nicely; however, the outward radiating cracks were still noticeable after the repair. As this was my first time using the kit, lack of experience probably contributed to any shortcomings in the results. The repair appeared visually comparable to a previous professional repair on a different rock chip, so I am definitely satisfied with the way it turned out. I found the kit easy to use and the instructions were easy to follow.
Let me know what you think, and thanks for watching!

As a dealer tech that’s done plenty of these repairs I’ve seen a really helpful trick for getting the crack lines to fill in away from the center. While the hole is filling with resin, lightly heat the inside of the windshield with a lighter starting at the middle of the chip and working outwards along the crack lines. This helps thin the resin to better get into the cracks!

So I ordered this kit and reading the instructions I was absolutely confused, unmotivated, and I even started to look up professional repairs. This video was clear, and made this process super easy for me!! Thank you 1000 times from Texas!!

Hi from England.. Great video. Thank you for posting this up on YT. I have had professional repairs done and naively expected the chip to disappear .. it didn't and doesn't. They were no better or worse than your example. ps.. many of the comments I have seen on other demos have similar naïve expectations and just rubbished the product. The only perfect cure is total replacement. However if you don't want to do that for every chip on the screen you can do something that will help prevent further damage. If you drive around with chip you can expect a replacement at some point and it may be at a very inconvenient time. I will carry a kit in the boot (trunk). All the best 👍👍

If a widow has a crack longer than 10 mm the screen needs replacing!

Thanks! You mentioned you had previously repaired a similar crack professionally, how much do they charge?

I used a professional for a crack that looked similar by size and shape. The result is very much the same to your novice repair. The remaining traces of the crack lines disturb me more than the little dot in the center.
My opinion: It's worthwhile doing it, but if it's within the direct line of sight, I would get the wind shield exchanged.
Also note: It's a one-off! If the first attempt failed there is no 2.try.

    Warranty void?

That's a good point. I believe that since the damage was caused by an impact rather than a defect in workmanship, the windshield wouldn't be covered by warranty. However, if some other failure were to occur that is unrelated to impact damage, then the windshield might not be eligible to be replaced under warranty after this repair.
