The consensus among Maneater fans and the gaming media is that Scaly Pete was an evil shark hunter who cruelly killed our mother shark - thereby justifying our quest against him. I lost track of the number of article a I've heard describing Scaly Pete as a cruel monster for his actions. I strongly disagree. The reason is because the Mother Shark was NOT an innocent shark minding her own business. In the first level where you play for her, she is required to devour a bunch of innocent beachgoers. Scaly Pete is only called in after she brutally murders them for no reason. What was Pete supposed to do? Let her keep eating people? Let her go, so that she comes back and continues to kill? Put her in a zoo? (I'm sure there would be people calling him evil if he put her in a zoo, too.) So in my opinion, Scaly Pete's Original Sin was actually a Virtue.
BRONZE AGE I think that you forgot though, he did cut into that baby shark. And he did it to market, so he was planning to kill it as it got older. So, while he was morally justified for the mother, he was not morally justified for the baby. So, he got what was coming.

Props to Pete's voice actor. He does that big brash Cajun thing well, and then he'll switches gears into softer, pensive. The delivery on lines like "I hope this college thing works out for him," man.
I was actually blown away by how much of a actual character Pete turned out to be. I was sure he was just some one dimensional shark killing bad guy but as I played and watched him emote, care for his son, and reach tbe brink just to take that shark down was amazing.
The original maneating mother shark was probably the one that ate Pete's father, and he couldn't acknowledge the idea that it was just a bull shark. Maybe when he was a kid he thought it was a Mega, because alot of things seem bigger to a kid's point of view.

I didnt say logic shouldnt apply to video games, but in a game where your shark can have electrical teeth and such I wouldnt try apply real life life lengths to it. Also no the maneaters mother was heavily implied to have eaten Pete's father because it had his father's spear in her side.

I love this antagonist, at first, he looks like a careless shark hunter, but as we progress, we get to learn more about him... almost feel for him, especially when he loses his son, it’s such a great way to learn the antagonists ways and learn more from him
What most people don't realize is that Scaly Pete was morally justified in killing the mother shark. The mother shark had just eaten ten innocent beachgoers in the first level!

But at the same time, the local residence don't care for the water environment as you can see by various region of the water. If they ruined the local ecosystem, it would disrupt the food chain and instead of going for fish, the sharks mainly targeted humans. This could also explain why some fish has some wierd mutation due to radiation.
So I’m guessing the bull shark mom really was the “mega” Pete remembered from his childhood, and he really did imagine it to be something bigger than it really was. Then along comes its kids as a true mega for the showdown he really wanted.
I was hoping that theres another shark. A way bigger one, the one he talks about when he has the moma hanging on his boat. Maybe theres a hidden one somewhere in the game.
Megalodon dlc might happen guys I mean a lot of people want it in discord and on the forums so the devs might be thinking about doing it. Think about it a brand new map along with giant prehistoric creatures that can help you get to the level of mass the megalodon was known for. And a new antagonist.
I actually like this ending, it seems fitting. These two creatures so full of hatred end up destroying each other. I actually ended up liking Scaly enough to were I didn’t want to just kill him in the end. I think the way both him and the shark went about things there really was only one way it could end for them.

For those of you who “are French and can’t understand what he saying and the word doesn’t exist” Cajun French is the French patois. So of course you don’t understand it. It’s French slang. But the saying does in fact exist. Some places have different dialects of French, just because it isn’t your type of French and you can’t understand it. Doesn’t make it less valid.

You do know sharks don't really have familial instincts, right? The Maneater was attack people from a mix of mutation, altered diet (the first thing she ate was human flesh, that leaves an impact) and desire for payback for that scar.
@@katonnor He also had a small window of escape when Pete told him to abandon ship, he chose to get the extinguisher instead and tried to put the fire out, the way I see it, Kyle was responsible for his own safety, it was his decision to stay behind that killed him

I kinda feel bad for pete, his son tried saving the shark and the boat but ended up dying due to it. Pete then ends up taking his own life in a last ditch effort to kill the mega.
@@jakes7342 I was talking about the theme of the game dude. In fictional stories you can make a story revolve around certain themes that otherwise probably would not happen in the real world in order to tell a story with a overarching meaning to it all or left to interpretation of the viewer.
Scaly Pete and his family and the sharks are actually two of a kind. They killed members of the other's species even before they went on a revenge quest. It seems fitting that they both died at each other's metaphorical hands at the ending. Personally I'd root for Scaly Pete though because as a human, I am biased towards his struggles.
@@Stanna44 The shark that Scaly Pete was after in both cases were maneaters (it's in the game's title after all). I think it is justified to hunt down sharks that purposefully attack innocent humans. In situations outside of this though, I agree that hunting down sharks is totally wrong, especially for their fins or sport.

Its not just that he killed her mother. It's that he also scarred and tortured her a baby shark. His sin is arrogance and cruelty. He is still likable in a way but at the same time he is an antagonist.
Sharks don't give a single fuck. They swim, they eat when hungry, fuck if possible, and live out as long as shark lives allow. They even eat their own young if it's fair game. This seems more like JAWS 4 meets the show SWAMP PEOPLE.
I think A lot of people are forgetting petes hatred of all sharks in general. He even admits he’d kill every one of them given the opportunity. Even this exaggerated game expresses that the main sharks human eating behavior in this game is weird as all hell though. It just seems they made bitter enemies out of each others bloodlines. I dunno, Petes grudges Just keep him from thinking rationally and not fucking up the environment.
I just realized the Shark's burn scars and Pete's burn scars parallel each other. Pete is burned on his left side and the shark is burned on her right.
Spoiler alert, the shark does live after this scene. You don’t officially live, but you do get a free room as the shark. So technically, the shark survived. lol
@@jeffyshredz He has that before, after Kyle died. He is burned and his left Eye is colorless. Just the same goes for Scaly Pete, the Devs want to show us that they just the same side of a coin.
Jaws showed that the shark survived though. This one shows the surrounding area for the entirety of the credits, and not once does a shark fin come up.

@@LilGhostlyX_X tbh he was a likeable dude, especially for the screentime and you could tell Pete really did care for his son and that if anyone was going to change Pierre's mind, it would've been him.
To be fair, he never once actually fully says "Megalodon", just "Megashark" which can really mean ANY oversized shark bigger than its species is supposed to be (just like the one you play as; bull sharks usually grow to about 12 feet/3.4 meters long, but by the end of the game it's more than 30 feet/9 meters long, more than twice as big). Never (IIRC) is the actual Megalodon shark actually named or fully referenced by anyone in the game, they're really talking about modern sharks way bigger and stronger than they're supposed to be.

We need to take into consideration what the very first comment you hear after eating the hand in the beginning of the game where after tasting human flesh, the shark forsakes the natural order of things in order to hunt humans. This could be applied to the mother shark where after Pete's father hunts her, she retaliates and eats a part of him. That changes her hunting habits and then makes her hunt humans more rather then fish. This is then continued with the player shark and the cycle continues until both Pete and the player shark destroy each other.
Best part about it really. It doesent make it look lile all sharks are very dangerous killers just thus specific shark we play as is because it got a taste for human flesh early on
@Lexisking 1 ehhh more like killing the one guy who could’ve actually done some good for this area... since Kyle was learning to be a marine biologist he could’ve easily then went to the city government and pressure them to start cleaning the water and enforcing dumping laws...but then he died

He then proceeded to release the child of that rampaging shark near human civilization AND accidentally gave said baby shark a taste for human flesh when it ate his arm for its first meal. The ONLY reason Kyle died was because Pete released the baby shark that later attacked the boat, never would've happened if Pete had been responsible and ensured the newborn shark never had the chance to attack anyone rather than let it go for sport and allowing it to cause so much death. Pete took the Man-Eater down with him, but it doesn't change the fact that hundreds of innocent people died because he decided to release a dangerous beast.
Interesting enough, Pete’s character arc is very similar to Cpt Quint in the Jaws novel (not the film). -Both hunt sharks -Have a feeling of being superior to the prey they hunt -Have their world view shattered by a shark that is more mentally advanced that a normal shark -And die killing the animal they have made a mortal enemy out of
There is no good guy or bad guy in this game. First of all, the Mother Shark and the Main Shark have no concept of morality or what is right or wrong. Even though the game greatly exaggerates a shark's behavior and what not, they're animals who simply follow instincts and besides, humans technically entering their territory whenever we enter inside the water. We also have to consider, the Mother Shark had a spear at its side, so it's very likely that the spear was the cause of it going on a killing spree, it was very angry and pissed off because it was injured by humans. Same goes for the main shark, Pete scarred it and injured it, thus pissing it off and holding a grudge toward the man. Despite how exaggerated these sharks were in their actions toward humans, they're nothing more than merely animals following their instincts and forces of nature. However, it doesn't make them any less dangerous, they are too dangerous for any human to deal with and they're intellect is uncanny. They're too 'unique' and aren't your typical sharks, which makes them terrifying and creepy. Scaly Pete isn't a truly 'good' person. While I do feel sorry for the guy and understand how enraged he is for losing his son, which goes to show he does care about Kyle than he truly lets on, his lack of expressing love and focus toward his son lead to the demise of the latter because of his own selfishness and pride/arrogance as a shark hunter as well as his obsession in capturing and gutting sharks daily. The main shark didn't kill the son, it was merely an accident, but if Pete were to show more concern for Kyle's safety and life, he probably wouldn't have lost him in the first place. Even though the man was starting to show that he really does care for his son, his actions after the first ordeal with the main shark wasn't pleasant. Dump toxic waste into the ocean is not only polluting the ocean and its ecosystem, it may also indirectly kill and poison any person that is swimming in the waters. I can understand Pete's personal reasons for hunting sharks and wanting to kill the one who indirectly killed his son, but none of this makes him a hero or a good person, he was too dangerous and a threat to ocean's ecosystem. While I'm aware that the main shark is said to want revenge on Pete for killing her mother, the game never actually implies that the shark holds an emotional attachment or love for the mother shark. All we see is that both animals were injured and scarred, causing them to act more aggressive than they usually are and bare a grudge toward humans. However, if we think about it in reality, humans are the real monsters and kill sharks more than how sharks kill humans. Not trying to say what the bull sharks were doing is right, they're just animals. Trying to justify or judge something that is merely following instincts is pointless. It is a cycle of revenge, yes. But if you look back and think, humans are usually the ones that start the fight with nature itself. In theory, if Scaly Pete's father or humans in general were to leave these animals alone, this cycle of hatred and revenge wouldn't have happened.
No bad guy yet the shark is smart enough to target a single human who wronged him as a pup which shows its actually very intelligent unlike other sharks and has good memory to recognize Pete long after and tell him apart from other humans. Wtf did the countless civilians the shark knows ain't her target do to her though? Sure the first people she met were terrible but beach goers never provoked her or posed a threat like hunters, in fact they tried to flee. Narrator himself said after she ate Pete's hand that it got a taste for human flesh as its the first thing it ate. So its likely just blood thirsty not angry with humans, except Pete. She could have killed Pete with his son but let him suffer some more unlike other people it just eats immediately. Maybe the shark is so big and smart for similar reason why sharks were big and smart in deep blue sea though, instead of scientists its just some toxic waste or radiation messing with its DNA from the nuclear reactor she swam past multiple times that caused it to never stop growing. Maybe it would have gotten even bigger if it didn't die.
Pete is an innocent person who was hurt by sharks. The Shark is an innocent animal who was hurt by people. They are both gradually become worse and worse. Was not expecting this kind of story in the shark video game
This Shark was practically the equivalent of a shark doom slayer. Even for just a bull shark, This shark killed and took out alligators, hammerheads, mako sharks, great white sharks, sperm whales, several hunters before Pete, Killer Whales, and evolves in a way no animal ever would. Next we’ll be seeing it eat a colossal squid
Scaly Pete was actually the good guy in this story, the shark didn't care about nature, it didn't care about what it eats and what it does not eat, it literally murders anything and everything it sees. It's mother was also the same by actively targeting humans for no reason in the first mission. Scaly Pete was just angry that he lost both his father and son to a shark, I'm sure most of you guys would be angry too. Even if he scarred the baby shark in the beginning, at this point, he should have killed it instead. That baby shark killed alot of people and was the ultimate reason on why Kyle died, Kyle, the only person who could have fixed the pollution. I know this maybe just be the bias of being human talking but... I truly believe that killing the shark was the right thing to do, Pete saved countless more lives of people and animals with his sacrifice. That shark would have thrown off the balance of nature and he prevented it. I don't actually hate sharks, I even supported not killing them, but this shark is an exception because of the countless deaths it has caused. In my eyes, Pete was the good guy.
it's a bad guy for doing what nature does huh? that is kind of wrong it isn't good or bad and Pete can't be called a good guy either who knows how many innocent sharks he killed looking for the maneater ones.(happens all the time one shark kills people and people try to hunt it down killing many innocent ones) Anyway in this case neither of them can be called good or bad Pete is a fisherman that specializes in sharks who hates them for reasons and the shark is a predator who focuses on human because she hates them for reasons.(at least the shark eat what it killed)

I actually liked Kyle and he opposed his father on his ways of hunting. Maybe Pete got what was coming to him but not Kyle.
You do know sharks don't really have familial instincts, right? The Maneater was attack people from a mix of mutation, altered diet (the first thing she ate was human flesh, that leaves an impact) and desire for payback for that scar.
In my opinion pete killed kyle not us. We didnt bite kyle he died in the explosion which was caused by the fire that pete started trying to kill us

Scaly Pete and his family and the sharks are actually two of a kind. They killed members of the other's species even before they went on a revenge quest. It seems fitting that they both died at each other's metaphorical hands at the ending. Personally I'd root for Scaly Pete though because as a human, I am biased towards his struggles.

In situations outside of this though, I agree that hunting down sharks is totally wrong, especially for their fins or sport.

The consensus among Maneater fans and the gaming media is that Scaly Pete was an evil shark hunter who cruelly killed our mother shark - thereby justifying our quest against him. I lost track of the number of article a I've heard describing Scaly Pete as a cruel monster for his actions.
I strongly disagree. The reason is because the Mother Shark was NOT an innocent shark minding her own business. In the first level where you play for her, she is required to devour a bunch of innocent beachgoers. Scaly Pete is only called in after she brutally murders them for no reason. What was Pete supposed to do? Let her keep eating people? Let her go, so that she comes back and continues to kill? Put her in a zoo? (I'm sure there would be people calling him evil if he put her in a zoo, too.)
So in my opinion, Scaly Pete's Original Sin was actually a Virtue.
Its not just that he killed her mother. It's that he also scarred and tortured her a baby shark. His sin is arrogance and cruelty. He is still likable in a way but at the same time he is an antagonist.

I think A lot of people are forgetting petes hatred of all sharks in general. He even admits he’d kill every one of them given the opportunity. Even this exaggerated game expresses that the main sharks human eating behavior in this game is weird as all hell though. It just seems they made bitter enemies out of each others bloodlines. I just realized the Shark's burn scars and Pete's burn scars parallel each other. Pete is burned on his left side and the shark is burned on her right.
Spoiler alert, the shark does live after this scene. You don’t officially live, but you do get a free room as the shark. So technically, the shark survived. lol

To be fair, he never once actually fully says "Megalodon", just "Megashark" which can really mean ANY oversized shark bigger than its species is supposed to be (just like the one you play as; bull sharks usually grow to about 12 feet/3.4 meters long, but by the end of the game it's more than 30 feet/9 meters long, more than twice as big). Never (IIRC) is the actual Megalodon shark actually named or fully referenced by anyone in the game, they're really talking about modern sharks way bigger and stronger than they're supposed to be.

We need to take into consideration what the very first comment you hear after eating the hand in the beginning of the game where after tasting human flesh, the shark forsakes the natural order of things in order to hunt humans. This could be applied to the mother shark where after Pete's father hunts her, she retaliates and eats a part of him. That changes her hunting habits and then makes her hunt humans more rather then fish. This is then continued with the player shark and the cycle continues until both Pete and the player shark destroy each other.
Best part about it really. It doesent make it look lile all sharks are very dangerous killers just thus specific shark we play as is because it got a taste for human flesh early on

He then proceeded to release the child of that rampaging shark near human civilization AND accidentally gave said baby shark a taste for human flesh when it ate his arm for its first meal. The ONLY reason Kyle died was because Pete released the baby shark that later attacked the boat, never would've happened if Pete had been responsible and ensured the newborn shark never had the chance to attack anyone rather than let it go for sport and allowing it to cause so much death. Pete took the Man-Eater down with him, but it doesn't change the fact that hundreds of innocent people died because he decided to release a dangerous beast.
Interesting enough, Pete’s character arc is very similar to Cpt Quint in the Jaws novel (not the film).

-Have their world view shattered by a shark that is more mentally advanced that a normal shark
-And die killing the animal they have made a mortal enemy out of
man hope they add some new shark evolution as DLC the way over the top ones
There is no good guy or bad guy in this game.
First of all, the Mother Shark and the Main Shark have no concept of morality or what is right or wrong. Even though the game greatly exaggerates a shark's behavior and what not, they're animals who simply follow instincts and besides, humans technically entering their territory whenever we enter inside the water. We also have to consider, the Mother Shark had a spear at its side, so it's very likely that the spear was the cause of it going on a killing spree, it was very angry and pissed off because it was injured by humans. Same goes for the main shark, Pete scarred it and injured it, thus pissing it off and holding a grudge toward the man. Despite how exaggerated these sharks were in their actions toward humans, they're nothing more than merely animals following their instincts and forces of nature. However, it doesn't make them any less dangerous, they are too dangerous for any human to deal with and they're intellect is uncanny. They're too 'unique' and aren't your typical sharks, which makes them terrifying and creepy.
Scaly Pete isn't a truly 'good' person. While I do feel sorry for the guy and understand how enraged he is for losing his son, which goes to show he does care about Kyle than he truly lets on, his lack of expressing love and focus toward his son lead to the demise of the latter because of his own selfishness and pride/arrogance as a shark hunter as well as his obsession in capturing and gutting sharks daily. The main shark didn't kill the son, it was merely an accident, but if Pete were to show more concern for Kyle's safety and life, he probably wouldn't have lost him in the first place. Even though the man was starting to show that he really does care for his son, his actions after the first ordeal with the main shark wasn't pleasant. Dump toxic waste into the ocean is not only polluting the ocean and its ecosystem, it may also indirectly kill and poison any person that is swimming in the waters. I can understand Pete's personal reasons for hunting sharks and wanting to kill the one who indirectly killed his son, but none of this makes him a hero or a good person, he was too dangerous and a threat to ocean's ecosystem.
While I'm aware that the main shark is said to want revenge on Pete for killing her mother, the game never actually implies that the shark holds an emotional attachment or love for the mother shark. All we see is that both animals were injured and scarred, causing them to act more aggressive than they usually are and bare a grudge toward humans.
However, if we think about it in reality, humans are the real monsters and kill sharks more than how sharks kill humans.
Not trying to say what the bull sharks were doing is right, they're just animals. Trying to justify or judge something that is merely following instincts is pointless.
It is a cycle of revenge, yes. But if you look back and think, humans are usually the ones that start the fight with nature itself. In theory, if Scaly Pete's father or humans in general were to leave these animals alone, this cycle of hatred and revenge wouldn't have happened.
No bad guy yet the shark is smart enough to target a single human who wronged him as a pup which shows its actually very intelligent unlike other sharks and has good memory to recognize Pete long after and tell him apart from other humans. Wtf did the countless civilians the shark knows ain't her target do to her though?
Sure the first people she met were terrible but beach goers never provoked her or posed a threat like hunters, in fact they tried to flee. Narrator himself said after she ate Pete's hand that it got a taste for human flesh as its the first thing it ate.
So its likely just blood thirsty not angry with humans, except Pete. She could have killed Pete with his son but let him suffer some more unlike other people it just eats immediately.
Maybe the shark is so big and smart for similar reason why sharks were big and smart in deep blue sea though, instead of scientists its just some toxic waste or radiation messing with its DNA from the nuclear reactor she swam past multiple times that caused it to never stop growing. Maybe it would have gotten even bigger if it didn't die.

This Shark was practically the equivalent of a shark doom slayer. Even for just a bull shark, This shark killed and took out alligators, hammerheads, mako sharks, great white sharks, sperm whales, several hunters before Pete, Killer Whales, and evolves in a way no animal ever would. Scaly Pete was actually the good guy in this story, the shark didn't care about nature, it didn't care about what it eats and what it does not eat, it literally murders anything and everything it sees. It's mother was also the same by actively targeting humans for no reason in the first mission. Scaly Pete was just angry that he lost both his father and son to a shark, I'm sure most of you guys would be angry too. Even if he scarred the baby shark in the beginning, at this point, he should have killed it instead. That baby shark killed alot of people and was the ultimate reason on why Kyle died, Kyle, the only person who could have fixed the pollution. I know this maybe just be the bias of being human talking but... I truly believe that killing the shark was the right thing to do, Pete saved countless more lives of people and animals with his sacrifice. That shark would have thrown off the balance of nature and he prevented it. I don't actually hate sharks, I even supported not killing them, but this shark is an exception because of the countless deaths it has caused. In my eyes, Pete was the good guy.
