There's a reason why Byzantine coins aren't worth much compared to Greek and Roman coins. The Average Joe can't explain what the "Byzantine Empire" is without Googling it. We are taught in school that the Roman Empire collapsed from barbarian invasions in 476 AD. In reality, the so called "Byzantine Empire" is the surviving remnant of the Roman Empire. The "Byzantine Empire" lasted until 1453, so technically the Roman Empire fell 40 years before Columbus discovered America. Most people don't know what the "Byzantine Empire" is due to the Byzantines being underrepresented in pop culture and lack of mention in textbooks.
