I love how you have the aviation bug just like me, albeit fixed vs. rotary wing. I should be hitting my 10,000th Boeing 747 flight hour later this year.
@@bernardanderson3758 thanks! The 747 runs deep in my family. My aunt was on the original design team back in the 1960’s. My mother’s best friend died in a 747 accident. And now I’m a 747 captain.
@@friskytwox ha ha! At last count I was right about 9,800 hours in the 747 and a little over 15,000 flight hours total. But hey, we all had to start somewhere!
Back in the day the factory would demo a loop at airshows with the D and E. It was not a full smooth "loop" but had a "kink" at the top to maintain positive Gs on the rotor system. Though if seen at ~ 45 degree angle, you'd swear it was a nice, round "loop-de-loop" 😊. I love this and hope they do well. Nick, thanks for doing this!
"You cant handle this bird"!!!" My rotary instructor was a Blackhawk high time combat pilot.. Ive trained with a few other instructors and flown with other pilots... There is just something truly special flying with a military trained pilot.. And, a Navy one!?! lol. Not even fair for the others..
My neighbor and good friend George, who's also a pilot, works for a Helicopter company here in CT (not Sikorsky), but the name escapes me...he's obsessed with aviation, like me, although I'm not as fond of being off the ground as I once was lol. Been fond of tooling around in my 991.2 GTS on pavement of late vs. 30-40k feet in the sky. Fly/travel safe, and one of these days my pugs are going to have to meet you and the pups, as they have a lot to say about you knocking the GTS!
The -530’s I saw at YPG were amazing. They were for a ‘foreign customer’, had the bigger Rolls Royce engine, air conditioning, six bladed rotor head with the four tail paddles. They were carrying all kinds of weapon load outs and were flying the piss out of them! My favorite load out was a brace of three barreled .50 cal Gatling guns with 2000 rounds per gun. They came back empty every trip!
Not very nice to interrupt your host, even if time is a premium. A part 2 video can always be produced. I flew the original OH6 (500C) with the then Allison 250, the the original Little Bird with the 450 shop version, in the military of course. Talk about maneuverability, even with a fully articulated rotor head. Awesome feedback from the push/pull system. Amazing bird, nearly 60 years old design that still rocks.
This was really interesting. I had no idea that helicopters were so expensive! I guess I’ll have to take this off my Christmas list. No wonder I keep getting socks.
When you accept Dennis’ (my namesake btw) offer to tour the production facility, you can stay at my house. I’m 8 minutes from driveway to MD Helicopter. Stay a few days and we’ll also fly to Sedona for breakfast in my humble but fast and sporty Skystar Pulsar III, which is hangared at KFFZ Mesa Falcon Field, a stone’s throw from MD. Brother Nick your content covers the perfect range of subjects. BTW I’ll pick you up at Sky Harbor (I work there) in the 2017 991.2 that you helped me decide on 😎🎩♠️💙
I would like two thanks.......This and the E series please My all time favourite heli. Flown a D series and nothing compares to it for it's agility and ability to get in and out of tight spaces. Oh how I wish I had a spare few million bucks...What a machine!
Nick we had a C model at Marines that was at Ardmore when I was a baggie (loader driver) got to love the Hughes and this one with all that grunt could it ever get any better !
A MD530 is like a VW Beetle. NOTAR = No Tail Rotor. You see them in films from the 1990s used by Police Forces. Much lower noise for urban environments. Large diameter tail boom. Seen the film #BlackHawkDown to see the 160th #NightStalkers flying #LittleBirds, an OH-6 with the outboard benches for #DeltaForceOperators and an AH-6 Attack Helo (MiniGuns) in action. Bell’s V-280 Valor, a tiltrotor aircraft, and Sikorsky and Boeing’s Defiant X walk around would be nice. Plus the Future Attack Helos the Sikorski Defiant X and Bell 360 Invictus.
They’re not big sellers anymore, particularly the 600N and 902. Those NOTAR’s eat up a lot of power, plus noise abatement restrictions aren’t imposed like they were 25 years ago. Why you also rarely see the “quiet” 4 bladed T/R’s on the 500E and 530F.
Remember the company is coming out of bankruptcy. They were bought out by a big consortium firm. The deadweight is being trimmed. The NOTAR looks to be dead weight.
Can't wait for the 7 hour video going through all the configuration options.
that would be nice
Watching Magnum PI made me fall in love with the MD500.
same do you like the pointy nose or the bubble nose i am not sure
Definitely my favourite helicopter as well. Been in love with them since I was a boy.
how long have you been a girl?
One of my favourite helicopters of all time! Can't wait to see what else you've got for us from Heli Expo.
A MD factory tour would be cool I'd like to see the FLIR camera setups for police and SAR.

Enjoyed this. Both you and Bank really know your stuff on this helicopter.
Very good ! For those who like to PILOT helicopters, this is the best currently manufactured.
Differences in helicopter models are about as subtle as the range differences in 911s.

Thanks Nick. I really enjoy the helicopter videos.
Best, meanest, and most hard core heli out there, loved them since i saw them as a boy in a movie called Capricorn One. I love them.
Absolutely fascinating, thanks guys.
This was so great on Magnum. TC really knew how to fly this beauty
That helicopter crashed. The real pilot almost died.true story . He was doing work for the electric company. In hawaii true story.

I always liked this heli the first time I saw. So we do have options for hot high altitude engines and rotors (including tail rotors).
Finally a solid explanation on the 2 vs 4 blade Tail Rotor!
easily the coolest heli
The most famous being the “Island Hoppers” owned and operated by one Theodore “TC” Calvin (Roger E Mosley) from Magnum PI!
Great video. This is my favorite helicopter also!. Thank you very much for putting out this highly informative video..

Any chance the 530 will go with the “slim line” i-panel?

Hey Nick Happy st Patricks Day! What was the helicopter they used in Magnum PI?
You heard him. You need a factory tour.
Had not been a chopper affectionato but I get it! Nick you must begin to review watches and we’re full circle on guy interests!
I used to fly Cobras with Dennis.
I have a 1 sitter mosquito 🦟 barn made to be a Shepard . Time 4 an upgrade
What about A/C do they have it or can you get it 😊

Nick not a NOTAR, it has a tail rotor!
kind of funny how to the public it's not an all weather bird, but the army uses it for the most hair raising all weather missions for 160th
#Augusta_Westland now #Leonardo make some pretty Helos, more in line with Porsches.

Has the 6xx been trashed ?
Hi MD 530F have autopilot?
Negative
Nick's would say " It Hurts when I PEE " and have Mini guns .
Have auto pilot?
I like helicoter or shoper
What kind of Porsche is this?
It's the MH-6 "Little Bird"

Whats the service like in the 500? Is it still 25h or 50h intervall

Why an auxiliary tank is a must. You should get at least 250NM with a Fargo aux tank and over 300 with a Robertson.

Why does the tail section looks so much longer?
The T/R shaft is longer than the E model, as are the M/R blades.
Boost off is unpleasant flying.
