Tomb of Ustad/Tomb of shagird :--
The tomb of Shagird is quite similar to the tomb of Ustad , in plan as well as in elevation . However, it shows a definite refinement of proportions . The sides and corners of the platform have partly crumbled . In this tomb , the square corner turrets replace the chhatris , each measuring 4.26m a side . These are in better proportion with the central dome than those of the tomb of Ustad . The domes of these turrets are also double as is the central dome . Each side of the octagonal drum supporting the dome is pierced by an arched recess , the alternate sides having entrances leading into the dome . The finial of the dome is missing now . Instead of two stairways as seen in the tomb of Ustad , there are four in this one , one leading from each ivan . Each stairway serves one upper room from where one more stairway approached the top of the tomb .
None of the above two tombs bears any inscription. Previously, three scholars -Alexander Cunningham, Charles J. Rodgers, and H. Goetz-have studied these tombs. Cunningham assigns the construction of these tombs to the fifteenth century. Rodgers did not take up the question of the date of their erection at all. Goetz ascribes these to the beginning years of the Mughal rule in India, under Babur.
The paramount evidence for a later date of the tombs of Ustad and Shagird is provided by the use of semi-domed ivan and double dome in them. The semi-domed ivan appears for the first time in India in the tomb of Humayun . In earlier square type of tombs, the centre of each facade was marked by a projected bay containing the archway. At least four tombs in this style are still extant at Sirhind. Similarly, the double dome also appears for the first time in India in a fully mature form in the tomb of Humayun." The space between the inner and outer shells of the dome of Ustad's tomb is 4.6m whereas in the case of Shagird's tomb it is 7.8m. It can- not be imagined that this architectural feature appeared in such a ripe form at Sirhind earlier than in Delhi. General Cunningham visited Sirhind in 1863-64. At that time local tradition attributed the tomb of Ustad to some Sayyid Khan Pathan. We come across several references to one "Said Khan Chaghtai" who lived during the reigns of Akbar and Jahangir. From 1578 to 1585, he served as the governor of Punjab. Again, in 1605, he was appointed on the same post." However, he died before joining the post." After his death, he was buried in "the garden of Sirhind". Most probably, one and the same person is the Sayyid Khan Pathan of the tradition and the "Said Khan Chaghtai" of history. His son Beglar Khan (original name Saadullah) served under Shah Jahan and died in 1630." His body was interred at Sirhind in his father's tomb. It implies that the tomb of his father "Said Khan" already existed at Sirhind. Therefore, the so- called tomb of Ustad was in fact the tomb of "Said Khan Chaghtai" and it was, most probably, built during the first decade of the seventeenth century. Now, Shagird's tomb. . The paintings in its ivans depict cypress and flowering trees. The flowering tree motif does not appear in Mughal painting or architecture until the year 1619." The trees in the paintings of Shagird's tomb are shown complete to the mounds of earth out of which they spring. This motif appears in bas-relief on the dados of the Taj Mahal (1632-54) and executed in glazed tiles on the Chini-ka Rauza (1639),15 both in Agra. It is also carved on the dados of the buildings surrounding the Taj and later in other buildings erected by Shah Jahan in the forts in Agra and Delhi." Hence, the paintings on the Shagird's tomb were executed either contemporaneously or after the completion of the above buildings. And if the decoration of the Shagird's tomb is contemporaneous with the erection of the building as it most probably is, this tomb was built during the reign of Shah Jahan or later. According to Cunningham, this tomb was attributed to some "Khoja, or Khwaja Khan"." However, it has not hitherto been possible to establish the identity of the person. The plan and elevation followed in these Sirhind tombs had already made its appearance in Delhi in the tomb of Abdur Rahim Khan-i Khanan which he actually built for his wife Mah Banu who died in 1006/1597-98. The only other tomb in the East Punjab to have followed the style is the tomb of Jamal Khan (died 1620) at Rupar."
