  • I gave this about a 50/50 chance it would work. Have driven it several thousand miles after bolting the engine cradle back to the frame with a longer bolt through the top hole in the frame. Has held up just fine and it goes down the highway normal again without wandering all over the road. I am not recommending that this is a safe repair just showing what I did.

Thanks for sharing. I did not need to cut the side panel. I fished in via the square drain hole a long bolt with the threads at the lower end. You can also fix it using a long U shaped steel plate with a hole at the bottom for a bolt and the two sides welded to the vertical walls of the car's main frame.

Top marks for ingenuity. It may last a lot longer than you think. There's really not that much dynamic load on the front of the engine cradle. Most of the suspension impact load goes into the upper chassis via the top strut mount and into the rear cradle to chassis mount via the A-arm. That's why there are so many of these Equinox and Vues running around with this rustout and people don't even realize it.

So far it has been 9 months and it is still holding up well.

Just wondering if its still holding up? I have a 06 vue with 71k, and the passenger side cradle rusted out, and i like your "repair".

It is still holding up and it has been about exactly one year since the "repair".

@@tylerexperienceDid cabin noise increase from this solution?

If I were you, I would put a long steel plate under the top nut and washers to have wider support. Use a little JB Weld to prevent plate shifting.

I like your steel plate suggestion.

Just curious why you didn’t buy the actual brackets to fix it. A 2006 Saturn Vue if it has the 3.5 in it is a very very good vehicle.
I like your ingenuity there are never thought of that. The only problem with that situation is that the part that you put the bolt through is very flimsy it’s like 18 gauge steel.
I definitely respect the ingenuity that is something that I never thought of

I looked at the brackets but I am a horrible welder and wanted to see if I could get it roadworthy without welding. So far it has been on the road for 8 months after this hack repair and no issues.

My 18 gauge section was completely rotted away.
So I bolted in a 2"×1/4 thick steel plate to replace that rotted section.
It's a 100% hack but I am back on the road.
So if yours does fail you still have one option left before the weld on brackets.
