I remember living in the country outside of the city , no sounds except for wildlife and the distant wailing of a trains horn somewhere... Tony Joe was there in those times
Well, when he wrote it, he was far from home driving construction trucks and he couldn’t work when it rained, so he wrote this classic. While I love BB’s cover, it pales in comparison. This is the definitive classic.
I remember him from the Memphis club scene in the 80's.Many of my older friends and acquaintainces remember him from the early 70's.Under appreciated by so many, but that voice is right there with Waylon and Hank Jr.
He played at my mom's house when my sister married a friend of his. Our Uncle Billy kept saying "That old boy sounds JUST LIKE Tony Joe White." Great moments. Saw him play Trader Dick's one time, always loved his voice.
Hypnotic and sensual. I can't help but become melancholy each time I hear this piece, I drift into a state of mind that holds me prisoner. Can you relate??
Saw tjw at the borderline in 2004 down charing cross road...he just walked in the venue carrying his own guitar case..strolled up to the bar..bought himself a bottle of bud then grabbed a bar stool, plugged in his guitar and sat playing for 3 hrs! Then sat with us after his set and sunk a few more beers! Legend! RiP big fella
I was at that show and it was tremendous. The audience totally appreciated his music. Saw him there again a year later and another 5 times. Loved his music.
I was there too! Travelled up from Poole for the concert. Amazing evening!! Also saw TJW at The Brook in Southampton.A little neare and just as good! 🎶🎶
Magnificent song. The Brook Benton version is in my all-time Top 3. There's a brilliant Ray Charles cover, too. But I love Tony Joe's version too. Rest in Peace.
BBs is good l grant you but l greatly prefer the original. The difference for me not so much the vocal and arrangement but the fact BB and his producer knew it’s a great song. I am not so sure TJW did: the recording is so unassuming and therein for me lies its charm. Less is more sometimes
The four note lick here (at 1.40) before he goes down to Dmaj7 is glorious (and is so like the opening notes to Band On The Run)....reminds me of the Paul Kossoff "less is more" principle....
Terrific voice soulful grooves and a great musician.Would have deserved much more attention. He never had the worldwide recognition he deserves. R.I.P TONY JOE
Tony wrote it and everyone else went to school on it. So genuine and a soulful approach to a song that takes you to the story he tells. Simply Beautiful.
I keep on returning to this song (and another version where TJW is playing acoustic and harmonica) however, the look of concentration and admiration for the song is evident from the look on Holland's face ..
This song was a huge commercial hit for the late, great Brook Benton, and let me tell you, here is another singer Tony Jo White sounded like. I still have that vinyl recording by Brook as the one (CD) by Tony as well. I did not recall Mr.White was the composer. Tony Joe White was a good singer and a great musician as well. May he rest in peace.
Lynda, I guess that's just fitting considering he wrote the song, but this interpretation is extraordinarily sweet. He probably sang a different rendition every time he played it live, just going with the flow, and whatever mood he was in at the time!
ÇHE PERDITA! CHE CLASSE LA SUA MORBIDA E CALDA VOCE TOCCA IL CUORE LE SUE MANI MAGICHE SULLE CORDE DELLA SUA CHITARRA TI FANNO SOGNARE! CHE IMMENSO ARTISTA
Stuff this roll on brook Benton and Randy Crawford. I have seen him perform his version on the late show on BBC two many moons ago composes who had their songs cover by other people Neil Finn were there with crowded house doing don't dream it over as Paul young cover it does anyone remember the show I'm taking about?

I remember living in the country outside of the city , no sounds except for wildlife and the distant wailing of a trains horn somewhere... Tony Joe was there in those times
This is still one of the best peoces of music to come out of later and the BBC. Thank you Jools
Nobody’s version captures the real loneliness of the song better and clearer than Tony Joe White. Too beautiful. Holland’s piano is PERFECT.
Well, when he wrote it, he was far from home driving construction trucks and he couldn’t work when it rained, so he wrote this classic. While I love BB’s cover, it pales in comparison. This is the definitive classic.
My god how I love this song........
That piano player is killing it. What a player to go with the lead singer. Greatness from both. Awesome!
the pianist is the show's host Jools Holland A well known and respected figure on the British music scene .
Rest in peace Tony. Thank you for being with us all these years with your wonderful music.
Always Home late , Tony Joe He has been with me from the first time I heard Polk Salad Annie.
That was very special.
The Mississippi will remain in flood from the tears of all TJW fans till they meet meet him in heaven one day .. RIP great man.
What an original talent he was. Tony personified soul.
That was effing great! Now I'm all teared up. One of the greatest bluesmen of the last 50 years!
"Rainy Night in Georgia" is one of my all-time favourites. Thanks, Tony. Rest in peace.
I saw TJW live in 1971 when he opened for CCR; been a fan ever since.
Makes a grown man cry. Thanks Tony and Brookd

A great song ..sung and played by a man comfortable with his own sound. Simply wonderful and a nod to the very sympathetic pianist, Jools Holland.

I listened to this song by Brook Benton when I was in Viet Nam a long time ago.Man am I getting old.
❤ Thankfully, you made it home. God bless you.
Damn it... I don’t know if I have ever heard a song this good. He damn sure made it feel like I was right there with him on that rainy night!
A song is always extra when the songwriter performs it. Certainly hold true here.
Rest Easy Tony. I've long enjoyed your music since my grandmother played it for me as a kid 30 years ago. You never got the notoriety you deserved.
Tony Joe is a legend. So sad he’s gone but his music will live forever.
Wow-just fabulous

Magnificent song. The Brook Benton version is in my all-time Top 3. There's a brilliant Ray Charles cover, too.

Some of the most tasty guitar licks you'll ever hear.......
The four note lick here (at 1.40) before he goes down to Dmaj7 is glorious (and is so like the opening notes to Band On The Run)....reminds me of the Paul Kossoff "less is more" principle....
I love TJW's guitar playing. Great tone and feel.

Such a magical song and TJWs interpretation is the best
Lynda, I guess that's just fitting considering he wrote the song, but this interpretation is extraordinarily sweet. He probably sang a different rendition every time he played it live, just going with the flow, and whatever mood he was in at the time!
