    I paid $23.78 at a store in Anchorage, AK for an 8” Lodge skillet and $37.20 for a 12” skillet. I got them specifically for my parents cabin in Alaska.
    It was so fun making my own seasoning on those pans.
    They make the BEST fried home fries and Moose sausages!

      Not unreasonable prices for that part of the country I would think. And with proper care they will last, quite literally, for generations! Thanks!

    Thank you for bringing me to this store! I love cast iron and have almost unintentionally become a bit of a collector since I find I need this piece and that piece and now have many pieces! I'd love to get that shallow stovetop fish fryer. Could use it for so many things! Thanks again. 😊

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's going to depend largely on the type of things you like to cook, and how many people you're cooking for I suppose. A relatively large frying pan, like a 12", and a 5 qt. kettle with a lid are two we carry most all of the time at a bare minimum.

    Viewing in March 2021, wow have times changed! Wish I could have been there....currently lots of shortages or price gouging on Lodge cast iron. Been trying for 3 weeks to order a 10” camp stove on their website. Thanks for the video!! ✌️

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there have been a lot of unusual and unexpected reactions to the events of the last year. Things will eventually stabilize. They eventually always do. Just keep trying and I suspect with time you will get your order. The more common items like skillets and griddles seem to be readily available now in most department stores. Perhaps the stove is just in higher demand or there are some logistic problems.

    I would have a field day in that store and I have to remember that when planning my next vacation. I already own a Lodge indoor dutch oven, and an outdoor dutch oven which I recently purchased due to going back to cooking with the non stick cookware wasn't satisfactory and I was tired of wasting money on stuff I would have to replace every two years of less.

    Omg this is awesome I have one skillet and I’m looking to expand my collection. It’s my favorite thing to cook with . I didn’t really how much they actually made ! Which deep skillet do u recommend for family cooking

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh Lord, that is a nearly impossible question to answer. The 12" is a basic must-have in any kitchen. However, in addition to several of those, (yes, several) I also own a variety of smaller ones, but my typical go-to pan is either my 13.5" or 17". It depends on what I am cooking, but I like to have some swinging room, and for fish the 17 is an absolute must. I have several 10" pans I also use for baking pies. So, my idea of a basic kit is an 8, 10, 12 and 17 skillets, a 2-ish quart sauce pan, and a 5 to 7 quart Dutch oven or kettle.

    • @minastar8602
      @minastar8602 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks you soo much this really helps ! I can see how the 17 inch is best for fish. I fry small fish in my current skillet and I always think I really need to go a bit bigger for bigger fish. Really I just love lodge and i just want everything cast iron now lol. But this narrows down essentials which where I need to start. So thanks for all your advice.

      Agreed, and I’m not much a fan personally of enameled iron since the enamel can break and is virtually impossible to get off without killing the iron. It will inevitably start degrading over time. I really like having the regular plain Jane oil seasoned iron.

    hi Paul! I've looked at some of their stuff at the Birch Run outlets before but that store really looks impressive! The leather pot handle cover is ingenius- what a great way to not lose all the skin off your hands!
    I don't know if you have many more trips planned this fall or if any are in the area but if you were a fan of the Andy Griffith Show I was just reading an article last week that the lady who played Thelma Lou does signings every month at the Andy Griffith Museum In Mount Airy- (She retired to the town that Mayberry was based on)
    Anyways, thought I'd mention in case that ever took you or Bev's fancy & you were headed that way anyway!
    I hope you're having a great week! 😊

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Annie! Well, as chance would have it, the next TENTATIVE trip is in fact to North Carolina, so that would conceivably work. However, we are getting a little burned out, and the response to the new stuff has been . . . well, less than exemplary. At least this morning, I am questioning what I am doing. Thanks for the idea, and we'll see if it works out. Thanks mostly for sticking with us. :-)

    • @AnnieThyme
      @AnnieThyme 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RealUnitedStatesVlog Sorry to hear that. You both be sure to take care of yourselves- that's the most important thing. I guess if you decide to keep going forward & posting (& I for one hope you do in some capacity) you need to make sure you're visiting places that you really wanted to travel to anyway- even if you weren't filming ¬ going at it so hard as you do work all week as well :)
      Their is no question of me sticking around- I'm here ,you're stuck with me now :) I know I have missed the last batch that went up but they're in my watch later playlist and I do always get to them in the end :) I wasn't watching too much of anything I was having a flare up my auto immune disease and my eyes were effected so I was needing to rest them quite a bit. That was the only thing keeping me away.
      Like I said, you guys need to do what's best for you- just don't do anything drastic right away- like disappear from all social media without a trace or anything. I would miss your videos but if you decide this isn't for you, I'd still like to stay in touch and hear how you guys are doing. (I know this is an extreme jump from what you said-- and I hope a break, a refocus, or simply a night's sleep helps bring clarity to the situation for you)
      I'm here with or without the videos :)

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Annie. We appreciate that more than you can know. I'm not quite at pull-the-plug mode yet, but I am reevaluating the channel. I think I'm just tired this morning. We still have a couple of weeks of material in the can yet to post, so there is that! :-)

    new to cast iron here, has anyone here been using a new lodge cast iron pan and hasn't done anything to it except season it? does it smoothen over time into looking and feeling like glass like older cast iron i see here on youtube? or is the texture still rough? hope someone replies and if possible id like to see how your pan looks now and how long youve used it for. thank you. btw i have a 10" skillet. not looking very good. getting darker I think but not really black in color. it's more brownish to be honest when you look at it.

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the surface finish is largely (though not necessarily completely) independent of the seasoning. So there is some flattening of the inside finish over time, but that means decades. Now keep in mind that most pans need to be re-seasoned periodically. Because the pan should be BLACK and not brown inside. Perhaps next time we season something I can make a video on cast iron care. Paul

      RealUnitedStatesVlog thank you for the reply. i dont know what im doing wrong since i follow the proper steps and procedures of seasoning and cleaning ive seen here on youtube. i just noticed that my cast iron has like a fine leopard pattern on the inside. i dont feel any bumps or anything and you wont notice it unless you really look at it with good light. is this bad? how do i correct this? or how do i correct my pan looking brown and not black? ty

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don't know what you tell you. As long as it works okay I suppose it doesn't really matter.

    • @kimberly1567
      @kimberly1567 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding leopard pattern. I have several old smooth Griswold's and 2 heavily used Lodge pieces for outdoor use. I had never seen the leopard pattern until approx 4 months ago. I had bought a country ham and had it sliced. Each morning I throw a slice into a dry Griswold assuming the ham would fairly quickly thaw then provide some grease to coat pan. It doesn't. It provides grease beneath the ham only leaving the extreme 50% outer area to remain dry. The outer 50% is what leopard printed in my pan. I feel quite sure I can place pan in oven using self-cleaning setting and take pan back to original unseasoned status then re-season but, pan is cooking totally fine. I am sure forgetful me will forget something cooking soon (happens every 2-3 years) requiring me to burn off old seasonings and start from scratch. I recommend never to dry cook in cast iron. When cooking, place fatty items on bottom or at least coast pan with light application grease/oil.

      When Lodge switched to pre-seasoned cookware many years ago (which helped sales since a lot of people didn't know how or wanted to season the new items) Lodge had to add a slightly textured surface to hold on to the sprayed seasoning. If you want a very smooth cooking surface, you will have to do that yourself or season the cast iron a LOT of times to build up the surface.

    NEED ONE IN TEXAS!!!

      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can definitely see where this would be a popular place in Texas. However, there is a really great place called la Tienda de Cocina in San Antonio, and although they don't carry cast iron as I recall, they do have a lot of very cool cookware! Thanks!

    There's only one trivet at your online store . . . unless I missed it! (3:11 mark)

      Apparently there has been some misunderstanding: I don't have an online store. Perhaps you mean the Lodge online store, but I don't sell anything online.

    There is nothing like Cast Iron Cookware...

      @Realunitedstates  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. It still makes up the majority of our cookware.

    Why cant Lodge make a pan smooth ?????

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "smooth" is an ambiguous term. From my point of view, they do. A secondary machined surface would make the pan prohibitively expensive, and add nearly nothing to its performance.

    do a quick pan here XD

      @Realunitedstates  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually we couldn't. We agreed to keep the customers out of the shot, so panning was sort of out of the question.
