    Tip: Starting with the bass drum is the best because it's difficult and any rejected staves can be easily reused by milling them down for the floor tom staves. Likewise any floor tom staves that get messed up for whatever reason, can be usually used for a rack tom....so if anyone ever does this, cut staves for the biggest drums first and there will be less waste.

      I'll try to have next video edited soon, it is just a tedious task that I've been avoiding...

    This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing, especially without some f*****g TH-cam library muzak.
    I just bought a table saw, primarily with the idea of chopping some shells for a 'hipgig' sort of thing. It terrifies me, so I'm thinking through a jig that will keep my fingers safe...
    Having seen this though, I can see the attraction of a stave build. If only I had the time...
    Maybe strap clamps might help with your next build? Cheers from the UK.

      Safety first! I thought of strap clamps, but those tightening straps (or what they are in english) worked just fine. And I had them already.

    What kind of timber did you choose and why?

    • @juhailola

      Birch planks, because I like the sound of my tama superstars, which are made from birch ply wood. It's also the cheapest hard wood, at least here in Finland.

    bass drum with 30 staves, right?
    and 14" tom with 30? is that better than regular 20 staves 14" snare?

      @juhailola  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think bass drum was 32 staves and 14" was 30. I don't know if it's better or not, I just had to adjust the amount/width of the staves to the board thickness I had available. So every stave had to be less than 50 mm wide.

    I'm very impressed with your patience and dedication to make a good instrument! How did the "ancients" make drums: did they bent wood or did they saw the wood in angles just as you did? Have a nice week!

      Joo-o, kyllähän se monesti kun internettiä selailee niin tämä kielimuuri, se iskee. Ei vaan millään ymmärrä. Ja kooklekääntäjä on varsin kämänen. Sen verran kuitenki ymmärsin että jotain mittoja olit vailla. En muista. Joitakuita millejä. Joka suuntaan. Tuossa videon alapuolella ku näkyy tuommosta tekstiä nii siinä on linkki tuommoseen sivustoon, mitä käytin ku koitin saaha mittoja. Se laskee sulle vaikka minkä kokosta rumpua tulemaan. Näkyy mitat, kulmat ja kaikki mitä tarttee.
