Firelock Games Week continues as we take to the high seas for a game of Oak & Iron.
Nate takes the Spanish to face a fleet of English ships with Mike at the helm. Who do you think will win this battle and sink there opponent's miniatures?
What fleet do you think you will be collecting?

This hits just the right balance of skill to chance and really captures the flavour of naval warfare - well done guys.
That seems to be my impression as well.
I love the combination of somewhat detailed damage with simple book-keeping (with the tokens for sail damage, for example) which can force players to make decisions, such as fix some damage vs reload cannons. This compares very well with other rule-sets that have either less detail or onerous book-keeping [yeah, I'm talking about you, Sails of Glory]. However, the one thing that still bothers me is how quickly the cannons are reloading. When battles are fought in a pre-Nelson manner, with the opposing lines sailing past each other, then instant reloading isn't much of an issue, but when one fleet turns to sail toward the other, then a lot of the strategy of whether to take the long-range shot or wait until they are closer is lost. Whether this could be "fixed" with two firing tokens, so that it requires two crew-action phases to reload is something worth testing. [The Sails of Glory method is better on strategy/realism, but the book-keeping is awful.]
Love the Oak and Iron Let’s Plays. More please
Not nearly enough nautical play available on the tabletop. Thrilled to see this is greater detail and can't wait to know more.
HOLD FAST ME HEARTIES!
“There’s so many holes now. There’s every chance he could miss” 😂😂😂
Glad to see the company going from strength to strength after the brilliant blood and plunder
Love these naval battles. One of my favorite time periods.
Great battle ! The flow of a squadron engagement ( with the crews condition) is well represented. Funny how extreme granularity isn't a necessity when "crew overall condition" is well modelled into the design. I know you Firelock fellas going forward up in the timeline but would be interesting to actually see it move backwards down to the start of it all. Anyway can't wait for the backer orders to start to arrive.
Thanks for hosting them for this playthrough.
So stoked for this game. Loving Blood & Plunder, and this is a great way to finally get a true fleet on the table (me being Dutch, that would be Piet Hein or Michiel de Ruyter)!
I haven't played sea battle games but after these videos I am hooked. Super play gentleman!
I like the concept of this game, for bigger or squadron action. I think I need to go back and watch the "intro" videos on game play as I don't understand the order of activation of the ships, the tokens placed on the ships and checking off damage on the ships' cards. What symbols are on the dice? I notice "cannon" and "skulls" are the rolls you want, what would other symbols used for? When Nate's ships' magazine was hit, why didn't it explode/sink? This was another fun and exciting video...good show!
Nicely painted ships. A painting guide or a list of colors and what they were used for would be really helpful.
loving the let's plays, wish there were more
This has just sparked my interest in naval wargames and my son would love to play this
Dying to give a Naval Battle game from the age of sail a go! Looks great! Great content guys.
I've been waiting for a long time fpr these games
We so need to play more firelock games in my club.
Looking forward to playing this. Looks great! Interesting playthrough
Loving the quality of the components and the way it plays
Hey guys😀
New subscriber👍
Love oak and iron really versatile game play and very fluid. It looks like an absolute tonne of fun. Great video guys I'm going to go binge some more mwahahahah😀👍
Super excited for this game. Always wanted to have a nice little game in the Age of Sail to sit around the table with friends and have a (cannon) blast.
This game needs to drop!!!! So excited for this adventure.
Looks fantastic. Can't wait for my pledge to arrive.
Really good game. Close right to the end. I'd really love to try this game.
Hopefully on its way to me soon - videos like this making it difficult to wait...
So looking forward to this!
Once I finish up some of my current projects I am going to pick this up.
I cannot wait for this to come out
Excited for this. Cannot wait
I love their work with Blood & Plunder, and I'm very curious to see how this game plays with my local group. I'd love to run a campaign that uses both Oak & Iron and Blood & Plunder!
Love this genre and the video is pretty nifty too. It’ll be good to see how this game pans out against Black Seas
Gutted I sold my island scenery, need to get back into a naval game - this looks good.
In June I'll get my miniatures. Realy excited.
Really looking forward to this game
Your wait for ages for a decent naval sail game then two of them come along at the same time. How does this compare to Black Seas?
Black seas rules seem more complex; as well as their ships that require more work, to a lot more work. I have both core boxes on order and will decide which I like better.
For one thing, the time frames are different. So, if you want the Golden Age of Piracy (in this case 1650-1750), then go with this one. If you want more Age of Sail (in the case of Black Seas (1770-1830), go with that one! I'm pretty basic, so I'm more invested in pirates, personally.
My son bought me this game and we've played several games. This game is a blast - so much fun.
Can't wait to play this game, looks great!
Just release it will ya! This looks brilliant!
Very nice looking game and well demonstrated.
Great batrep, game look awesome would love to get a set
Justin growing a beard again. Absolutely love it.
glad i backed this, need to get me one of these water mats though.
I love the ship models!
"More 'a wake' than me."
Now just to get my hands on a whirlpool to recreate scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean 😈
The rounds plays pretty fast!
I really can't wait to compare this the Warlords Black Seas. Both look really good!
You can read the rules at Firelock's website. They are on the download section.
@@Cubannerd Thanks! I missed that!
Can't wait to get this game
Really love those epic battles ! Hope to win one of them to sink some enemy ships captain
Very good gameplay - definitely wanting to be more than a spectator! ⚓️
Psyched for this game can’t wait to try it out.
Great game and set in an amazing periodo of time.
Somewhere between Xwing and black seas, Looks fun.
I'm going to need one of those 1st ratings for Blood & Plunder!
Just bought Black Seas, so interested to see how this differs.
Me also!
Missed out on the kickstarter for this one
Is the game designed entirely with open water in mind, or would it work well with LOS blocking islands?
Can't wait for my kick starter to come, backed the full double set. Hint: would be nice to get an update since the KS has been delayed and it's been a while.
that ship game looks fun
Can anyone say where the gun smoke and wake markers are from? I can't see them on the Firelock website... thanks
Really like the movement mechanics in this game looks great and well thought out! Ps. Can I have an OnTableTop dice tray pleeeease 😁
Looks like a solid, quick system once it gets going.
Looks like a solid game. Would love to try it.
Looking good. Something a bit different to the 'usual' releases
Nice fact about the Wake Justin. from an Irishmen in America.
Uhhhh, I can not wait to get my hands on this!
Looking really good
Yay, Oak & Iron!
i like the look of this system
Love the game mechanic to this, debating this or the game from warlord
Would love to see a campaign that links this with games of Blood & Plunder.
We're working on one at the moment
@@Paint_with_Nate Awesome man, I bet it's going to be great.
This game looks like it would be fun to play.
Awesome game!
wonder how this compares to Age of Sail, never played a naval game, but letting loose broadsides would be fun.
Anyone knows which brand and size is this gaming mat?
Looks like Deep Cut Waterworld 6x4 neoprene mat. It's a good deep cold water scenario mat. They also do the same pattern in a lighter Caribbean colour. I have their 4x4 cloth mat, its a great pattern.
Love it!
Looks like a great game!
Which game mat are you using, supplier and size? Which one would you prefer Oak & Iron or Black Seas?
Looks like it's the Deep Cut 6x4 Waterworld neoprene mat
Is this all production stuff? Does that mean it's close to shipping for Kickstarter backers?
This all prototype stuff. We filmed this month ago, production stuff has just started rolling in, so we are close!
Looks like a fun game.
Please have the Portuguese as a playable faction! The first of the great Seapowers (and which at that time controled half of South America and major strategic locations in Africa and Asia) should not remain delegated to oblivion like that. Or just be lumped together with the Spanish (despite the shortlived Iberian Union). In the same way that the Dutch were not German, the Portuguese were quite different from the Spanish, particularly as an Empire based on maritime power and trade.
I'm very interested in this time period and in naval wargaming and find the Firelock systems quite engrossing, but I'd like to see a broader aproach (not always only the Caribean) of the period, including Portugal, the Barbary Coast and the Ottomans. I'd like to be able to fight seabattles of the Luso-Dutch war, for example, which feature some big engaments and had important geopolitical consequences and not just as a prequel to the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
I wish the game success though and may take the plunge someday. Cheers!
Looks solid, love the flavour for the differents nations. Let's hope I win.
I Like the firelock games t-shirts too!:)
Blood and Plunder is good stuff, I'm sure Oak and Iron will be too
Never dabbled in Naval warfare. Seems a good a time as any.
So many skulls! Mindblowing ending (*g*). Realy want to play it myself.
Looks super cool! Sign me up! :)
Great game
Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum! Pirates, buccaneers, freebooters, filibusters and freelancers... Caribbean what could we want more :-)
Awesome
Great game guy’s
this oak and iron will look good on my table, usually the only iron and oak i have is when i iron clothes on my oak table :{
Another Black Seas player here. Lurking.
Didn´t they at one point mention that cannon reults at musket range count as criticals too? Because the guy playing the spanish got those at least twice later on. Did he just foget it or did i misunderstand something?
That's for raking shots :)
@@FirelockMike oooh i see. Thank you!
I need this as a PC game.
That playthrough didn't excite me, but I suspect this game exists more in the minds of its players than with most other games due to the nature of the movement
Arrrrrrr!!!! This game looks so good it won't need to walk the plank ;p
aaaaaargh there be booty
as soon as i get cupboard space......be picking up oak and iron boys
Looks cool. I like maneuvre-oriented wargames.
