How to make Kiln Cookies for Ceramics

- This is how I currently make my "kiln cookies" or "patties", to protect the kiln shelves from glaze drips, especially when doing some weird experiments or trying new glazes.
Update! The reason my clay (not the glaze) got stuck, and why I saw plucking, was probably because the kiln was firing higher than it should!
Hope you find this useful :)
Do you have your own kiln shelves/cookies tips and trix to share? :}

Do you find with this technique that underglaze on foot ring doesn’t stick ? I saw you made a mug cap with glaze?
@@yshoux i havent tried putting underglaze on a foot ring as far as i can remember, but in my experience underglaze doesnt stick to things, so i assume you wouldnt need a kiln cookie for that:) Not sure what you mean with the last sentence, sorry.
Great tip with waffle rolling pin
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Most satisfying moment when I thought of the wafflepin-strategy and it worked! 😄
Do you fire the cookies before you use them under your pots? Or are they still greenware when used under the pots? Excellent video. Really useful.
@@alisn.7998 I bisque them, then use them under pots in glaze firing. But im pretty sure it worked also when I tried a greenware cookie. 😊👍
Great video! Well presented and useful.
Glad you liked it 😁
Where did you buy the rolling pin? (They are hard to find online.)
Bought it at a local secondhand store, the "kruskavel" are common here in Sweden. But you could get a rolling pin with some other pattern, plenty of those online:) For something similar, maybe search for one with a geometric pattern.
Is there a reason you add texture? Does it make it easier for you to pull off pieces when glaze drops?
Maybe less surface area?
@@jessarsenstudios yep that is why, and if the glaze drips it will sorta run into the texture instead of pool around the bottom, I imagine:)
Very nice! I'm just starting my adventure with pottery, thank you for this video
Mmmm forbidden stroopwaffels
Hello Nylma, I found your video a very interesting one.
I am from Brasil and yould love if you can tarnslate what is Pladebeskyttelse?
Hi! Not sure where you saw "pladebeskyttelse" since the video was in english? 😅 But I assume that is "kiln wash" :)
Very cool! Where did you get those 1kg weights? Thank you for posting this! ❤
I got them at some second hand shop a long time ago. You can also use weights for weightlifting, just those flat things whatever theyre called, very handy:)
Great video. Clear, informative, well edited. Thanks
Thanks a lot:D
Thank you for this video! Can you reuse the same cookies ? How long can we use cookies for ?
As far as I know, you can reuse them until they are not functional anymore. Like if they get glaze on them that you cant remove. And Ive noticed some of them start to get bloating after being fired many times.
Do you sell these?
I don't, it will be much easier to make them yourself imo, you don't have to use a textured rolling pin if you don't have one, and don't need cookie cutters either.
Would these work under glass while I fired?
Not sure what you mean "under glass"? Do you mean when adding bits of glass to the ceramics? I use these as a safety precaution for that too, but then I also like to make the "cookie" with some edges so it will properly catch any glass if the ceramics crack and glass pours out - that's just how I do it.
@@nymla I make glass art in a kiln. Can these be kiln washed and used under glass?
Maybe. I don't know enough about glass art to answer that, sorry. @@elizabethwatson71
Mysig video! ❤
Yay! 😊
Superbra tips!
@@nymla
@@AnnaBrolén Tack! 💚
Thanks a lot for the informative video. 🙏🏻🌱I have two questions:
1- There's no need to bisque fire again after applying kilnwash? (before using them in glaze firing I mean)
2- Is it possible to apply kilnwash on bone dry cookies and then bisque fire them?
Thanks in advance ❤
