Exactly why I loved and got through Tartt's The Goldfinch so quickly! It's ~800 pages but the chapters are broken up into small parts and it's super breezy
When it comes to third act breakups, i’d rather read an entire book of buildup and for the couple to finally get together at the end, than read a book where they get together in the middle and then break up/make up in the 3rd act
My biggest romance book ick, specifically, is when the main problem of the book arises out of the two characters NOT COMMUNICATING. Why the hell is every romance couple out here acting 12 years old and incapable of sitting down and having adult conversations. And if that is the only way that the author can think of to cause tension... they need to go to writing school.
If you want a cute couple that actually communicate read Heartstopper! It's abt 2 boys who fall in love! In the first like 2 books ( there's a show too ) they're only 15 and 16 yet have better communication than most adult couples! Just a book rec! ♥︎😊
Literally the first 40 pages one is SPOT ON. One of the reasons I never read as a kid was because I hated starting books... I just couldn't focus through the first 40 pages so I never read anything. But I have to say, an ick for me is... full on hook ups in the morning before they brush their teeth. I just cant stop thinking about how bad their breath has to be the entire time, and it is NOT hot at all. Also, small text. I will literally not read something if the font is small..
I can understand the “no way I just said that out loud” when it’s a heated situation or an emotional one. Since I feel like sometimes we forget ourselves and end up saying things we wanted to keep only in thoughts, realizing it a moment later. But most of the time it still feels so forced haha. Just to move the plot or reveal something that was supposed to be a secret.
I feel like enemies to lovers does work in sports romances (when they’re on the opposite team and fight for some big thing or something) but when it’s a romcom I think you’re definitely right!

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not but when the main characters meet on the first page/chapter I love that. It’s straight in no messing around and makes it so much easier for me to read
i completely agree about long chapters! i love the inheritance games because of that fact. it feels like i can get through it and enjoy it without being bored of a giant chapter. it seems to be easily bingeable that way instead of reading something that takes FOREVER to get through

I met my husband in the subway I was late to my music class he was coming from a soccer ⚽️ game we saw each other it was instant love the following day after bumping into each other we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend 8 years later we split up and we gave our relationship a second chance! I should write a book! 23 years later with 2 kids we are still in love 😍

Ok. I totally get your point on enemies to lovers, and I think it’s been really badly done in recent romance books. HOWEVER, my all time favorite rom com, Pride and Prejudice, is definitely enemies to lovers. Sure, Darcy didn’t kill her entire family, but he did ruin the chances of her sister marrying well in a society where that essentially defined your future. Additionally, she (mistakenly) thought that he cheated her boyfriend out of an estate he supposedly inherited. And there was nothing she could do about it because of her station in life, and he taunted her for it… Yeah, I’d be pissed too.
I may get alot of hate for this but oh well I feel like it must be said: My book ick is how in romance books especially there will be a scene where a character is casually SA'ed and then it's just brushed off and never acknowledged. Ex: randomly kissing a stranger you don't know/doesn't know you or using SA as a plot point like they did in Love & Other Words w/ Elliot and that girl. I agree that the first 40 pages can be excruciating😮💨
I literally crack the book spine the second I start reading 🤣 I'm very careful not to crack them in the bookstore in case I don't end up buying it, cause who wants to buy a brand new book with an already cracked spine, but once that book is officially mine you can bet imma crack them all 💅🏽😂

I have a friend who published a finished book on wattpad as her senior year capstone project. I mean, I'm genuinely proud of her for accomplishing that but she still cringes about it regularly bc she had to talk about it in front of a panel of teachers 😭

I hate it when characters parents sell them off into marriages. For example in Neon Gods when Demeter sells Persephone to Zeus (a 60 years old man that killed his last 3 wifes) or Scarletts father in Caraval that is like "well I sold you to him so you now go to his bedroom with this men you never met before and let him r*pe you to make up for your misbehaviour". It makes me sick
Mine is a weirdly specific one, but whenever foods are used in comparison to one of the characters. Some of the worst ones were "he was so hot you could fry an egg on him" (I'm not even kidding right now, some author and editor looked at that line and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it) and the ever-popular "the mushroomed tip of his . . . ". Like This needs to stop. Mentioning foods when trying to be sexy just really kills the mood for me.

12:45 Yeah, they always put stickers in random place that are sometimes important. I had a couple where they actually covered up half of the synopsis....what a nightmare. Sometimes they was easy to peal, but others was gravity. I just never understood the concept
I also don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. It's not like they're actually related or anything. Would we have thought it was weird if the mcs got married then their divorced parents started dating? I don't think so. It's not a favorite trope of mine by any means, but it's just kind of a quirky way of meeting one another.

I crack spines and I'm proud of it. I have seen that photo where someone cut in half thick books to make it easier to carry I feel that was a one person band but that would be my ick. I hate long chapters too I'm reading Burial Rites atm and the chapters are like 20 plus pages long. I don't like when the same detail is mentioned in the book so much for example Daughter of the Pirate King loved the book but I didn't need to be told she could defeat any man like it makes it almost unbelievable. In a book group on Facebook there was a running gag of posts about characters letting out a breath they didn't realize they were holding.
Everything written by Ali Hazelwood gives me the ick. Her entire writing of the character Bee from Love on the Brain? I rolled my eyes so much. Like at one point Bee got too excited and wrote something in German and “didn’t realize it.” ????? she isn’t German. English is her first language. BFFR.
My biggest ick would be a love triangle between brothers/relatives like... That is ridiculous and disgusting (Yes, The Summer I Turned Pretty plot I'm staring at you because WTH)

One of my biggest icks is the groundhog day type troupe where the same day is repeated multiple times. I feel like we get screwed on a full book because you have a beginning, the same middle 3 times and then an end. I just HATE it and refuse to read them.
I dislike how many books end in proposals or have epilogues where they get married. Not every relationship ends in marriage and not every story needs that epilogue. I don't know I get a little annoyed at it to the point where I won't read the epilogue so I won't ruin the book for myself
Oh the sticker drivers me insane too! I do try to not break my spines but that's BC I reread and I've had book pages fly out! I was going to order where the crawdads sing but then the books started to show that it would be on Netflix, 8 knew this likely wasn't a sticker and I didn't see the book locally so I didn't end up buying it. They literally lost my sale BC of their possible sticker. Another thing I similarly hate is when you are looking at a specific version/cover etc on Amazon etc but you read the reviews and it's for every book under that title. If it's got a different ISBN it's a different book and that's the one I want to know about, and if i order I want to receive the one pictured and not a different cover or font etc. I'm in a small town and have a limited budget so I am stuck with books from Walmart or trusting the internet. I'm not driving 3 hours one direction to a book store BC I just don't have the cash to make that a worthwhile trip. I see book ppl who buy series as they come out and then they don't match bc of online shops, so now I end up trying to wait for a series to be out then spend a fortune on the set so I know it matches. My ex and his best friend are models and it doesn't matter how good the book sounds, if I have to buy a picture of an ex to curl up with in my bed I'm just leaving him on the shelf 🤣🤣🤣 sooooo I guess I'm agreeing with Missy of these but fake stickers and real humans on covers literally have prevented me from purchasing!

I hate long chapters in books but I looooove them in fanfic lol. The difference between reading something new versus a deep fixation with an established character, I guess? I'm reading a nonfiction memoir right now and all the chapters are 60+ pages each and it's such a drag to read even though it's an interesting book, just because I cannot pick it up casually. But for a fanfic I'm excited if I get a 10k chapter on something I'm reading/writing haha

I hate it when characters parents sell them off into marriages. For example in Neon Gods when Demeter sells Persephone to Zeus (a 60 years old man that killed his last 3 wifes) or Scarletts father in Caraval that is like "well I sold you to him so you now go to his bedroom with this men you never met before and let him r*pe you to make up for your misbehaviour". It makes me sick
Mine is a weirdly specific one, but whenever foods are used in comparison to one of the characters. Some of the worst ones were "he was so hot you could fry an egg on him" (I'm not even kidding right now, some author and editor looked at that line and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it) and the ever-popular "the mushroomed tip of his . . . ". Like This needs to stop. Mentioning foods when trying to be sexy just really kills the mood for me.

I crack spines and I'm proud of it. I have seen that photo where someone cut in half thick books to make it easier to carry I feel that was a one person band but that would be my ick. I hate long chapters too I'm reading Burial Rites atm and the chapters are like 20 plus pages long. I don't like when the same detail is mentioned in the book so much for example Daughter of the Pirate King loved the book but I didn't need to be told she could defeat any man like it makes it almost unbelievable. In a book group on Facebook there was a running gag of posts about characters letting out a breath they didn't realize they were holding.
Everything written by Ali Hazelwood gives me the ick. Her entire writing of the character Bee from Love on the Brain? I rolled my eyes so much. Like at one point Bee got too excited and wrote something in German and “didn’t realize it.” ????? she isn’t German. English is her first language. BFFR.

One of my biggest icks is the groundhog day type troupe where the same day is repeated multiple times. I feel like we get screwed on a full book because you have a beginning, the same middle 3 times and then an end. I just HATE it and refuse to read them.
I dislike how many books end in proposals or have epilogues where they get married. Not every relationship ends in marriage and not every story needs that epilogue. I don't know I get a little annoyed at it to the point where I won't read the epilogue so I won't ruin the book for myself
She should try the way of breaking in paperbacks where you take a section from each side till you get to the middle.

I was going to order where the crawdads sing but then the books started to show that it would be on Netflix, 8 knew this likely wasn't a sticker and I didn't see the book locally so I didn't end up buying it. They literally lost my sale BC of their possible sticker. Another thing I similarly hate is when you are looking at a specific version/cover etc on Amazon etc but you read the reviews and it's for every book under that title. If it's got a different ISBN it's a different book and that's the one I want to know about, and if i order I want to receive the one pictured and not a different cover or font etc. I'm in a small town and have a limited budget so I am stuck with books from Walmart or trusting the internet. I'm not driving 3 hours one direction to a book store BC I just don't have the cash to make that a worthwhile trip. I see book ppl who buy series as they come out and then they don't match bc of online shops, so now I end up trying to wait for a series to be out then spend a fortune on the set so I know it matches.
My ex and his best friend are models and it doesn't matter how good the book sounds, if I have to buy a picture of an ex to curl up with in my bed I'm just leaving him on the shelf 🤣🤣🤣 sooooo I guess I'm agreeing with Missy of these but fake stickers and real humans on covers literally have prevented me from purchasing!

I hate long chapters in books but I looooove them in fanfic lol. The difference between reading something new versus a deep fixation with an established character, I guess? I'm reading a nonfiction memoir right now and all the chapters are 60+ pages each and it's such a drag to read even though it's an interesting book, just because I cannot pick it up casually. But for a fanfic I'm excited if I get a 10k chapter on something I'm reading/writing haha
The only thing with the third act conflict is that we’re all told to follow story beats and books that are without conflict towards the end are always called boring so
