    I love watching some of your old videos!!! LOL I'm a handloader and keep a massive stockpile of the 62gr and the 75gr gold dots on hand including loaded ammo it's definitely my favorite 223/556 bullet and oddly enough if you're willing to load your own ammo you can almost use it as a plinking bullet because they're that affordable.

    If I had to use a military round I'd take the Mod 0 any day over either the M855 or M193. But, I'd take the Gold Dot over both of them as well. Dr. Roberts has lots of good info on ARFCOM on all these rounds for those interested; much more than any of my gel tests will tell us.

      .223 soft points are more effective than people think. I've seen just as many deer dropped in their tracks with .223 as any other full-power caliber.

    This throwback makes me smile, it's been awhile since 2012!! Also, seeing these old midwest industries handguards makes me remember how much I love them. I bought a PSA upper around that time that had a 13" rail of the same style and I always liked how it felt in the hand

    From what I've heard (I can not verify this at all) the newer rounds have slightly more velocity due to them dropping the 556 version from the lineup. Again, I have no evidence but I read it on the internet :D

    Aside from being on the slow side, I think the Gold Dot 64gr and the 75gr loads are the best all purpose round. Penetration is excellent, expands early for better terminal ballistics, barrier blind, and shoots at least 1MOA for me. I've seen Iraqveteran's video and his 9mm HST partially expanded at almost 450 yards, I would be confident this round would get the job done past 400 yards.

    This ammunition (mine is '12 headstamp) was chronographed at 2711 from a 16" suppressed carbine, and 2500fps from a 10.5" suppressed SBR.

    I've used this round on MN whitetail deer with good results. Three deer ran a total of 30 yards after impact at 50-70 yards. Impressive terminal damage. Note that all 3 shots were just behind front shoulder, through both lungs. Damage to entrance-side lung was definitely fatal. Also saw wound channel damage to heart in one case, liver in another. Third shot was a bit high. Lungs only. Animal still went down in 10-15 yards. I was not completely sold on 223 being used as an ethical deer cartridge. After these results, I have changed my mind. In the right circumstances (with the right shooter), 223 is plenty (and less damage to venison).

  • @Mrgunsngear
    @Mrgunsngear  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely. Military 5.56 rounds are not great defensive rounds (outside of the Mod1/0) for civilians. There are just much better options available to private citizens.

    i'd just like to interject to your haters - that there's nothing sacred about ordinance gel. ordinance gel has an acceptable "range" of BB calibration depth, there's nothing precise or exact about ballistics testing, terminal or exterior. stacking tolerances from factory machining process can have two of the exact same barrels firing much difference average velocities. ballistics testing is a rough estimate, albeit interesting. Thanks for another great video.

    I use Speer LE Gold Dot 223 64gr for deer. Exit wound was the size of a US quarter. My concerns with this round was the over penetration at shorter ranges of up to 125 yards shooting through the body and wasting the remaining kinetic energy into the landscape. This ammunition works great for raking-shots and engaging variants at longer ranges 200+ yards. Federal Premium LE TRU 64 Grain Hi-Shock SP -- may be a better choice for deer hunting. Hope this helps.

      I got some 55-grain GDSP, and it was very accurate. I don't have a chronograph or ballistic gel but I did shoot a deer with it and it only went about 75 feet before it dropped. The only problem was I didn't get complete penetration. The bullet lodged under the skin on the opposite side, but the permanent cavity was large enough and went nearly the entire length of the overall wound channel.

    FWIW I have a lot of respect for M193 and M855, both would make great defensive options. But the fragmentation was just a lucky coincidence, they didn't know the rounds would do that when they made them, it wasn't until ballistic testing w/ high speed cameras that they figured out why they were so effective. I'd say the real benefit of the Gold Dot round (or Winchester PDX1) is that it can be fired safely in any rifle (semi or bolt action) that is chambered in .223, while 5.56 can't.

    Exo594, that is nickle plated brass. It is very popular in factory loaded premium personal defense ammo. Some say that the nickle plated brass feeds better and can be seen easier for a "chamber check." I say- It just looks different, which is cool to me.

    I use this ammo for deer hunting. People that believe the .223 caliber is to small for hunting large game obviously doesn’t know what they are talking about. A lot of water buffalos harvested in Vietnam were shot from several 100 meters away. The ammunition for hunting is far superior then FMJ NATO rounds. The NRA forum on .223-caliber rifles for hunting: Despite the controversy ammunition experts have proven, “the .223-caliber has plenty lethal power to get the job done quickly”.

    The military can't use hollow points, so M193 and M855 are great options as they create substantial wounds through fragmentation. M855 can defeat infantry armor, and is probably better than the Gold Dot in that regard, however GD is designed for law enforcement who generally don't go against armor. Compared to pistol rounds, this ammo has great ballistics and great penetration, with the projectile going deeper into the block than M855 or M193, since they yaw in soft targets, then break apart.

      Lmao you couldn be more wrong about so many things!

    • @1911Funguy
      @1911Funguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TerminalM193 My opinion on this has changed quite a bit in the 9 years since I wrote this reply.
      M193 is still very effective against an unarmored target, however I'm not a fan of M855 anymore. M855A1 is an improvement but I think 5.56 in general is inadequate for military use, as the body armor used by America's adversaries has improved. Which is why the army is adopting 6.8mm. I think it would be smart for law enforcement to also adopt the same 6.8mm round that the army is moving to. Just to be better prepared for the possibility of armored shooters, and to have better range in general.
      If your rifle has an adequate twist rate for a 64gr bullet this 5.56 round should be great for home defense and for LE in most cases.
      Also, yes I'm aware the military can use hollow points. They typically don't use them in rifles. They have been using JHPs with the M17 pistol.

    • @TerminalM193
      @TerminalM193 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1911Funguy Well, I'm happy to see you've attained more knowledge when it comes to the platform as a whole. I didn't mean to come off so crude. I completely agree when it comes to m855. It's an extremely overrated round that really only benefits from 20"+ barrels and even then it's performance is very situational.
      Proper M193 is what I like to "stack". Primarily from imi, Winchester and Hornady Frontier. Those are the only 3 that seem to still produce full power M193. From my 16" I'm able to get 3060 - 3150 from muzzle which is almost perfect when it comes to defeating all soft armor and some plate armor. When it comes to terminal ballistics the round is absolutely devastating when entering a target at 2900+fps. Really it's only drawback is its 55g design. It can still be decently accurate and devastating through light brush but not so great vs any other types of barriers.
      For the home & farm I really like the 62g bonded sp gold dot. The bullets design allows it to function properly all the way down to 1300 fps so it's practically perfect for both my 11.5" BCM & 16" SOLGW. I'm able to get about 2900fps at the muzzle for my 16" and have taken massive hogs and coyotes out to 160 yards. The wound tracks and exit are always disgusting and I would hate to get hit anywhere with such a round. I'd really like to see how the round performs at 250-400 yards but currently there's only 2 spots on the property that I can reach out that far safely.
      5.56 is an absolutely devastating round when you take the time and effort to match the right bullet design to the intended platform. That's what I love about the caliber. There's so many different and great designs that serve specific purposes since it's such a popular caliber. I'm eager to see some testing done with the 6.8 through battle rifles. I wonder how creative they'll get with different bullet designs. It's insane how much pressure the new sig rifles can handle.

    I've got a sneaky suspicion that the ATK .224 bullet advertised as their Gold Dot is the same as the Federal Fusion line . Nothing wrong with that because I use Fusion a lot as a hunting round in different calibers , and it is a great bullet for it's price point . So if one is cheaper than the other , then go with the bargain .

  • @TurboMitsubishi
    @TurboMitsubishi 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Needs more frangibility. Could you test some Mk318 vs M855. Maybe it's my time in the Army, but that wound channel just doesn't look very impressive. I realize it's .223 so it's a little slower than 5.56. But I would have expected more from the round being a Speer Gold Dot bullet. Mainly because I have been very impressed with there .45acp ammunition.

      These perform great out of my 10.5” and 11.5” BCM barrels.
      10.5” - 2363 fps 7 yards away - 16” of penetration with similar wounding displayed with MG&G longer barrel. 100 yard - 16” of penetration with excellent wounding.
      11.5” - 2509 fps 7 yards away - 14” of penetration with more wounding capacity than MG&G linger barrel. 100 yards 13” of penetration with major wounding capacity.
      These and the 55 grain variants have very similar ballistics, and in my testing is a wash.
      I most certainly would not want to be on the receiving end of them.
      For the price, these can not be beat, especially when found for $10 a box frequently.
      Another devastating round at an excellent price are the Federal MSR rounds!

    I'm looking forward to seeing this out your 10.5" barrel. Also, what would be your preference between this and the Winchester Ranger 64 grain round? I've got some Hornady 5.56 62 grain Tap and some Australian Outback 69 grain ammunition that I would like to see you test.

      they perform very similarly

    Great video! I wonder how performance would fair from a 12.5" barrel with a 1/7 twist...

    I can get this pretty cheaply, locally. For about 50 cents a round. What do you think for stocking-up ammo, for emergencies?

    What is your preference for 5.56, hollow/soft points or otm types (75 tap or 77 gr) and why?
    Also if one has a longer 20 inch barrel, will that benefit a certain type of bullet more?

    • @Mrgunsngear
      @Mrgunsngear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TehRaven I have a video on setting up a HD AR. Also one on AR barrel lengths

    • @Torchwood3339
      @Torchwood3339 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TehRaven keep in mind that when you get up there in weight the bullets are longer and wont fit the magazine or the mag well and can only be loaded through the ejection port !
      also the heavier bullets need the tighter 1 in 7 twist rate for stabilization...
      and yes barrel length makes a difference as does the gas port and size of it !
      there are lots of vid's out here that cover everything ;)

    Hard to explain in 500 characters but since you're a handgun guy this may help---would you ever us NATO 124gr FMJ 9mm as your primary defensive handgun ammo? Probably not. Same reason you wouldn't want to use military 5.56. The .mil folks have WAY too many unfair restrictions on the ammo they can use---you don't.

    Awesome ammo. MRGNG, do u think this would be a good self defense round or do u think there is too much over penetration? I know u like the Hornaday 75 mg ammo. How does this compare to that?

    At the end of the video you mentioned testing this load in SBR length guns. Did you ever get to that? It's hard to search your channel as for some reason the "magnifying glass" icon to search videos within your channel doesn't show up when viewing your main channel page. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    I wish some one would find the velocity of the round after it exits 12" of ballistic gel (human torso width), as its used by LE and home defense rounds

    • @justinv3080
      @justinv3080 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      B Berg ballistics gel penetration is roughly double flesh penetration, so 18 inches of penetration into gel is roughly 9 inches into human flesh, and the exiting layer of skin adds more confusion to the mix because it could take an additional 2-4 inches of gel penetration just to break all the way through the skin. Nothing is guaranteed though, especially with bones in the mix.

    Mrgunsngear Channel Did you ever get around to the SBR ballistic test with this ammo? I searched, but realized really quickly that you have a ton of videos!
    Between this, and Fusion 62 grain ammo, what would you recommend for the 11.5" barrel I mentioned to you before? Thanks for the review! I trust Gold dots in my 9mm and .40 handguns, and these seem good for a rifle as well. Not sure if 2 grains will effect velocity in an SBR much.

    • @Mrgunsngear
      @Mrgunsngear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mrgunsngear Channel Oh, and I appreciate the. recommendation. I'm going to go ahead and pick some of this up, today. I know you have a, if not a couple SBR's, and ammo ballistic experience.

    Like your videos. A while back you were testing the mk318 0 mod and getting crazy penetration something like 30-32 inch? Anyways in reference to that particular ammo I watch people shooting it in gel and all get like 14-16 inch as best. Have you tried shooting it thru gel again to see if you got same results? My old 30-06 doesn't even penetrate that much. Thanks
