- 10 years ago Stefan Janoski proved that keeping things simple requires skill and conviction. In pursuit of the perfect skate shoe, his ardent approach to the design process turned his first signature Nike SB into an instant icon, eventually evolving into a franchise with 1,500+ versions to date.
We sat down with Stefan, James Arizumi and Kevin Imamura to look back at 10 Years of Janoski and its arduous beginnings.

he created a whole design movement for skate shoes. Every one had variations of the same style by 2010. Adidas had its huge success with Busenitz making similar old school shoes.
And eventually the aesthetic blew up beyond skateboarding. Now all the "normies" like your grandad or little sister are probably wearing a pair of vans or Nike SB's. Your little sis probably has a Thrasher sweatshirt too.
Janoski made skateboarding "stylish". And pop culture snapped up that style in no time.

@@metzgeruesef He didn't specifically say that, he said he could have settled for a shoe that he made but it wouldn't be exactly how he wanted. So he settled to make a colab shoe with the Janoski's. Poor Shane, he got the short end of the stick...

S5NNA depp P-rod, Salazar, BA, Tayler, Janoski, Koston, nyjah. That’s more than 4. And the countless collabs like lance, kb, team rider series.
I think the design of the shoe, the timing of its release in skateboarding, and the fact that shane oneill primarily skated it right when he was becoming famous and everyone wanted to be like him all worked perfectly together

For sure it is the best Nike Sb cause is not a vintage shoe reinvented for skateboarding, a shoe from an amazing Skater for skaters
And most of them are affordable and still look great when you wear them with other casual clothing.

How long do they usually last you? Do they rip easily? And what do they cost?
Joshua Garcia I’ve had mine for about 3 years now, still no holes and the soles are in great condition. They were my main shoes for a while too. Really good quality for $80, sometimes cheaper if they’re on sale. You can check the zumiez or tillys website

I always loved that his shoe read “For Daily Use”. When it dropped the Nike SB sneaker head culture was crazy and dudes weren’t skating shoes but collecting them.

Bring back the Janoski from 09-10. Better quality, design. Now theyre just pleather and squeak or have a air bubble in them/ocean shoes.

Have you tried Es Accel? I wore around 50-60 pairs of them during my "career" before everything went wrong. 🤔

i just called the skatepark of tampa shop and asked where can i find the original janoskis with the leather laces, the ones they made in 2009-2010, and the original black colorway. They said they have a few at the store and to call back in novemenber or december and they'll have more, hopefully for sale on their website, cuz i don't live anywhere near Tampa lol.
Been skating Janoski’s since 2010. Definitely have gone through over 50 pairs.

kemp Pretty much haha maybe more pairs in a year. They’re great quality shoes and their soles last for awhile. I just don’t like to skate a shoe until they’re completely trashed.

The P Rods are also a really nice shoe. The thing is neither of them last very long if you skate hard.
I use to ride a lot prod 1 and 2s back in the days. Wish they were still doing them.

I remember when they came out. Saw them in my CCS magazine and bought them right away. Just like they said in the video, shortly thereafter almost everyone was wearing them. Such an awesome shoe. Loved the story

I still remember when the Janoski SB dropped. It was my favorite skate shoe of all time because I never liked big puffy skate shoes. The board feel it gave you was like no other. Watching this video and hearing him explain all this now years later is awesome.

I just pulled out my old pair of Janowskis I had from my closet and had all these memories swirl back. Never knew the shoe was so popular but it was always my favorite skating shoe and Janoski was one of my favorite skaters. Glad everything went the way it did during the creative process

Definitely top 5. The SB Dunks and P Rods are dope as hell too, but Janoskis are the most affordable and look great no matter what you're wearing.
I used to go through one pair of van a month, i was really stubborn I really tried to make them work. I tried to avoid going to Stefans shoes. Then vans stopped making the shoes i like skating and i had no choice left and just tried stefans shoes out. I quickly realised i waisted my time not skating in these shoes. These are the best shoes I’ve ever skated in 20 years. And i can make then last up to 6 months compare to 1 month with vans. Thank you Stefan. I wish i started skating these shoes ten years ago

Freaking love that shoe. Went through around 10 pairs.
Tried others, but none really come close to the Janoski when it comes to boardfeel, durability and style.
Keep the variations coming, and don't give up the leather laces please!
That was so good. The Janoski is by far the best shoe I have ever skated so I just keep buying them over and over. I swear it gives the person wearing them special switch flip powers.

I’ve been using janoski sb’s since the original black and white suede’s dropped, I never thought I’d own multiple pairs of the same shoe.

I've been running Stefan's shoe since the first year they came out. I've since owned easily 70 pairs of Janoskis. It does help that my brother runs a skate shop, and cost+10 on them is usually around $40.

That's why I buy used nikes off ebay. You get rarer stuff and it is better quality
Bought some Janoskis in 2013-2014. One of the best shoes I've ever worn, I wish they still made the same colorways.

This shoe was so underrated, it changed skate footwear and made it more mainstream, I remember every kid in middle school had these whether they skated or not.

I remember my first pair of Janoskis, my problem with skating up to that point was board feel, Im not that great of a skater but those shoes helped me tremendously when it came to simple flip tricks and control, I cant really skate other shoes now. maybe blazer lows but a good day skating starts when I put on my Janoskis.
To this day my favorite shoes to skate in and wear as daily drivers. Home run is an understatement.

Stefan Janoski definitely revolutionized the skate shoe game. The Janoski is like a conundrum -- minimal yet extremely effective in terms of board feel. He's one of the few people to create a new classic, which is very hard to do.

Gotta respect the attitude of "I don't have shoe now and, if the shoe isn't like I want it to be, I will not have a shoe. Doesn't matter to me." I bet it's super easy to give in, when you're about to have something like your own shoe and the company might come up with something that just isn't you, but you can't help but thinking the possibility of dropping the deal, if you start to demand changes. And of course sometimes this ("oh, well, no shoe then") happens, probably way more than we ever will even know. Nice little documentary!

Oh!!! He wanted to make your foot bleed, well mine bleed on the first and only pair of janoskis that I had. And let me tell you something the best Nike SB shoes are the Koston one Hypervulc I can skate does shoes forever. The fit like a glove, super high cushioning, great board feel and the best of all the are so much classy than the Janoskis. The only thing right is that the Janoskis are for daily use, but not for skating.
I skated about 45 pairs of Janoski’s! For me it is the best shoe to skate for sure! They look so pretty good and they feel good to skate! Love them❤️
Damn I remember when these came out. Fallen had a low profile shoe along with Van's but they were the only ones back in the day. I hated the bulky skate shoes so much

Janoski’s are by far my favorite shoes to wear. They are comfortable and pretty dope! Nike really made a dope choice signing this kid and making the brand stand out! Forever a legend.

Was highly disappointed in janoskis. The first ones were made like tanks. The later ones had a dip in quality. A pair of Vans costs less and lives alot longer. Wtf

En Mexico es raro que alguien patine unos Stephan Janoski , son demasiado caros para destrozarlos , he visto uno que otro por ahí pero casi todos traen tenis de menos de mil varos..
Fucking 9 years.... wore them for years off and on skating, daily use. Finally after being way past break in period (leather was tough, as it should be) skated them hard. Still lasted several years.

I remember when these first came out. Shane O'neil was skating them in Debacle. Also the Leather laces never stayed tied while skateboarding in them.
Its a great looking shoe, i just feel like theyre not my go-to for skating. I guess i prefer more support, like Lakai.
yeah, Janoski shoes are great for casual wear but I can't wear them for skating. I find the width of the shoes to be too narrow. I don't experience the same issue with any other skate brand shoes, or any other Nike skate shoes.
I had three pairs of Janoski’s but they had the air bubble. Those were my favorites.

NikeSB are just corporate shills leveraging what's popular. When I was sponsored in the 90's you wouldn't be caught dead in Nike's. Chad Muska's Etnies were and still are the GOAT for skate shoes.

These are my favorite shoes, hands down. I didn’t know the story behind them, I didn’t even know they were a pro skater shoe, I just saw them in a Zumiez about 5 years ago and thought they looked good and they felt right on my feet. It’s cool to see these were a product of butting heads

I've had my Janoskis for about 7-8 years and they're still going strong. Don't skate no more though as I can't risk broken bones or rolled ankles for work.

El Es me personally I would recommend the OG, now I will admit that I do appreciate them beefing up the insole a little bit but I feel like the OG just looks better. Now if you’re talking about skating, that is all personal preference because everyone skates differently so it depends what you like. 🤷♂️

The first time I seen them I know I had to have them! At that point I was about two or three years removed from skating being a father and not having time to skate much if at all and those shoes just spoke to me! I went to the Nike store in Chicago told the Guy what I wanted and He looked at Me funny, then said You know these are Skate shoes right??? LOL, I said YUP! With this Kool-Aid smile! Damn I'm getting old!
