    Disagree 100%
We used to be in landscaping and it was tough to scale past a couple crews (like Tigran business also!). It's good and we made decent money but very tough to scale and take yourself out of the day to day ops.
Moved into lawn care (fertilizer, weed control etc) and have never looked back. Went from 4 crews in hardscaping to 12 crews in lawn care with the ability to not be involved with the day to day of the business and could take months off and the business would still run.
This is just his tactic to get more sales on his courses! Guarantee if Tigran didn't have his courses to sell, his landscape business would be as profitable as the 40 year old mowing lawns.

I wouldn’t fully agree with you Tigran. When it comes to maintenance it can be very profitable and it easier to scale than design and build. Just look at the biggest landscaping chains in the US. They usually just focus on commercial (mainly because employees can do a mediocre job and not have people complain about it). Although Mariani Landscaping in Illinois does like $54 million doing 88% residential work and doing it profitable for decades. I say this while I just do design build work but because I like building things but eventually I will have a maintenance team for high quality residential. I simply wouldn’t knock mowing but I know you want to sway people to your courses which is okay I guess but I wouldn’t do it knocking what many use to start off at.

I think it is clear to most lawn guys that you didn’t know what you were doing when you were mowing lawns. Yes your likely killing it in construction. But I’m sure your lawn game needed hella work T. Lawn guys drive those trucks everywhere

  • @allphaselandscape
    @allphaselandscape 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Mr. Clickbait,
You might have a point for the guy who is a one truck operation. You're forgetting to mention (or you don't understand) that lawn businesses are actually far more scalable. You can copy and paste your way to having 10-20million dollars in annual revenue and dozens of crews. Many guys have done just that. Anyone ever hear of CitiTurf or Perficut? These "stupid" guys could literally buy and burn your business 20 times over. To call them stupid is just completely foolish and shows what a juvenile business person you are.
Here's another FACT that you're failing to tell the people. If I have a $1 million lawn company and you have a $2 million construction company our profit is probably the same because a good chunk of your revenue is material cost. Not to mention the fact that you have to acquire much more expensive equipment. Let's also deduct all your equipment payments from your profit while we're at it. What's that.... a couple hundred thousand a year? Congrats, That means your less profitable but you've got a great bragging number.
Lastly, I noticed you're bragging about your truck again and lying to people that it costs $110,000. Show the contract again and everyone will see that The 110k is your total of payments with your high ass interest rate.... Not the price of the truck. I have the same damn truck but it's a paid off 2017. Your ability to overextend yourself with loans is really not that impressive.

    • @andrewstratton806

Exactly I slay with my paid off trucks mowers and equipment. Only thing I have a note on is my skid steer for 18 more months. Having notes on a bunch of stuff at the same time isnt impressive at all. Hire a mechanic it's alot cheaper then just buying new equipment every couple years

Exactly what I was thinking as well. First lawn care business I thought of was Augusta Lawn Care owned by Mike Andes. This Tigran guy is a joke by calling lawn care business owners stupid. He talks about not knowing anything about construction but silently outs himself as a poser. He’s the equivalent of a MLM finance guru that you always see ads for. He probably worked doing pavers and some landscaping and decided to just start his own business by hiring guys that are actually smarter than him who can actually do the work and know what they are doing, all while paying them less. And that truck……yeah, it’s a long wheel base Ford 250 with basically the best trim. $70k-$80k and sometimes less. But that doesn’t even matter, because it’s just a tax write off. This guy is a turd.

100% agree with you T. I started a lawn care business about 5 years ago. Finally grew enough balls to go full time at the start of this year. Things were going great until my car broke down and I had to buy a new one. I quickly came to the realisation that I can’t keep working for 200 or 300 $ per day because when things go wrong there’s no back up funds.
I have now started doing construction, I’ve made more money in a couple months doing construction than a good year doing lawns.
Defiantly believe anyone that’s doing lawns and looking to take the next step should go for it. It’s not easy but very rewarding at the end. 👍

I think both fields can be just as profitable. Mowing and smaller landscaping is our most profitable crews in terms of profit/man hour with much less equipment investment. If you can do a 100k job in 2 weeks at 10% margin but a mowing route can profit $1000 a day who’s winning after 2 weeks? Pretty comparable, but with mowing we have less hassle and don’t need extremely highly skilled people to run the crews. Losing one of those guys can take a huge hit on the quality of a job. Something to consider. Don’t feel pressured to get into these big projects When you may be more profitable where you are today. I’ll believe it when I see apple woods P&L 🤭😉😉

I mow Monday-Thursday and do landscaping/hardscaping projects on Fridays. And I don’t do lawns for $20 dollars… the goal is the find clients that understand that you get what you pay for, aka high end neighborhoods for the most part. Sure a guy could cut a yard for $20 MAYBE as well as I can for $40. But will he be consistent? No, he won’t. When somebody tells me “my other guy did it for this much” I just say that’s great, I don’t.

All what we do is mowing with some soft scape stuff. There is money to make in lawn care. How to make the big money is having a super tight route. 80% of what we do is turf maintenance work, 10% is soft scapes and the other 10% is snow plowing. The reoccurring cash flow is nice. We show up every week and make the same amount of money and it’s all profitable. There are better profits on construction work yes, but it also depends on how long it takes you to do a job. We bang out 800-1200 days mowing with two guys with very low overhead. I see where your coming from, but I’m not convinced that mowing is just dumb.

So although we do not make crazy money off mowing, mowing stems off into bigger jobs. For us at least 🤷🏽‍♂️

You forgot the part that construction requires a contractors license. Landscaping requires a C27 contractors license.
The contractors license requires 5 years experience, 2 licensed contractors to sign off on your application for a license, and pass the background check that takes 9 months, and pass the state exam.
It's illegal to operate a contracting business without a state contractors license on any job that costs more than $500.00 per job materials and labor and can't be completed in 1 day.

I would not have been able to without the amazing margins in maintenance. There will always be cheaper guys but I built my business around addressing the pain points of having to work with those guys. That’s competition. Mowing lawns is not for stupid people. Lmaoo this so true. I’m 16 and mow lawns and hate it. I’ve got 33 accounts and yeah I gross about $1400 a week from lawns but I can make twice that in a day quite easily doing excavation work and landscaping work. I bought a small John Deere loader last month and have already made more with that than I did mowing lawns all last year. I’m now looking to buy a mini ex and get out of lawns as soon as possible. I have been watching your videos for over a year and it’s changed my business for the better. I’ve been “taking hella risks” and it’s paying off. Thanks T keep up the great vids

The thing about most lawn guys is that they live in denial. Sure there are exceptions but the majority are barely hanging on. My second year in the lawn biz I was killing myself with 120 lawns a week and I realized there has to be a better way. Realized all the money was in the projects I was up selling my customers. Starting trimming trees year 3 and FF to year 13 I was losing tree work at an alarming rate because I was a slave to my lawn accounts. Finally pulled the plug 5 seasons ago and sold the lawn biz. Now we do as much in a week with trees as we did in a month of lawn biz.
How many times have you seen a lawn guy bitching about replacing a $400 edger? To many.
Let’s be honest, lawn pricing is the same now as 20 years ago and sadly the lawn guy gets the absolute least amount of respect in the green biz!

There's nothing wrong with mowing lawns. Construction and lawn care are two COMPLETELY different businesses. This is like a plumber telling a carpenter he's stupid for being a carpenter. They're different industries, there's no comparing them. You were obviously trying to be offensive with the video title at any rate. We're mostly design/build, but one thing mowing has for it is consistency and being less stressful overall.

Yo. Imma just say I what works for me and it ain’t lawn maintenance. It’s the difference between your average ticket price being $50 or $1,500, $5,000, $50,000... whatever level you’re at. I had the advantage of watching my dad and the multitude of landscapers and nursery owners that trained me in this business make the mistake of barely breaking even with all the overhead. Equipment maintenance, labor costs, fuel, etc... you can’t make any real money and on that I will agree with ya.
I have buddies in this business that beg to differ and perhaps I just don’t know what I’m doing but I solely do landscape/hardscape installation.
    Works for me.
