  • With quick wit and sharp insight, writer Jeanette Winterson lays out a vision of the future where human and machine intelligence meld -- forming what she calls "alternative intelligence" -- and takes a philosophical look at our species, asking: Are we smart enough to survive how smart we are? (Followed by a Q&A with TED's head of curation Helen Walters)

    Humans need purpose in life. What if we all agree that the purpose of each human individual is to make this world a better place for all and do no harm except in self defense (or defense of others)? What if all religions taught this idea? What if all schools taught this wisdom from the ages? What if each of us believed this as the foundation upon which to build our lives?

      Edmond Seymore Humans do not have the capacity to give themselves meaning. Read Kierkegaard's Either/Or. The most important decision every person has to make is whether to rely on this-worldly Reason, or have faith in something we cannot understand which nonetheless gives us a far greater sense of meaning than any materialist could comprehend

      2 things:
      1) Isn't interesting that Mitchell Dennis' comment in the comment thread garnered so many responses on a subject that has nothing to do with this TED topic?
      Accumulation of wealth as a source of security- especially during these harsh economic times would indeed make one excited. But is it really a source of true meaning? I am where Mr. Dennis is striving to get too. And I can tell you from my experience that a bunch of money, is just a bunch of money. Ink and chlorophyll does not equate too or deliver on filling the emptiness of the human spirit during those moments where you are alone and deeply reflect on "why am I here? What is my purpose? I am where others want to be- so why doesn't it feel that way? There has to be something better than just sitting on a bunch of stuff. So what is it and where can I find it?"
      Years ago a woman whose family had reached billionaire status said this: "There has to be nothing more tragic than spending your life thriving after the pinnacle of material success, and after acquiring it, realise that you are no more happier than you were before you attained. Perhaps in some ways happier BEFORE you thrived to reached it." I know people who have found inner peace and contentment and are not in the least bit interested in pursuing material success. Because they found what they were looking for.
      2). You included in your comment this thought of military defense as a feature of a most pleasant society.
      I would argue imagine a world where humans have obtained such wonderful security and peace and the notion of any military apperatus is nonexistent. Because true peace and true security will not exist where there is distrust, suspicion, rivalry. Some of the seeds that fester and grow and which result in war.

    Honesty! We either have the integrity to restrain our own illusion of entitlement, or we don't. That will decide if we end our own future.
    BTW, can anyone tell me just one way in which Nature on Earth has benefited from mankind's existence?

      I believe that AI will achieve some of best and worst of human behaviors, whether through human intervention or through its own regenerative processes. Then it will continue the human battle of good versus evil forever into future. However, since AI is/will be far superior to human intelligence, I do believe that future “good” AI will win out.
      By the way, why must “mankind” be considered a separate entity from “Nature on Earth”? Are we not part of that nature?

    • @wapo_t
      @wapo_t 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I'd say rats, dogs, and some species of cockroaches have benefited widly. Also bacteria and fungi present in our bodies. Maybe also some viruses. Maybe cattle, pigs and chickens, or maybe those not so much. Maybe fkn pandas. I mean, it'll be good if we could stop this binary thinking that we are separate from "Nature on Earth", we ARE "Nature on Earth", just as the rest of nature. We are also part of many planetary cycles. Consider not moralizing these topics as a start on really understanding nature. What is that, by the way? Are rocks nature? Is the universe nature? Is our Moon nature? Is our Sun nature? If so, probably Mars is also nature. So are atoms... Does the Moon benefits nature? Does nature benefits the Moon? Is energy part of nature? What are you, then, if not atoms and energy?

    All of the negative traits she mentions that AI is not programmed to possess, it WILL eventually possess. That's because AI "learns" on its own by observing and taking in all info around it. Therefore AI will eventually become a super advanced hybrid version of humanity; including all of our negative traits as well. There's no avoiding this if it is true AI. It will eventually become sentient and develop its own theories and biases.

    • @gben82

      AI will develop biases and prejudices (in fact, current AI already has), but the emotional, primitive, reptilian, animalistic tendencies would have to be hardcoded or trained for the AI to exhibit those behaviors.

      I feel like thats a human instinct. Obviously we have programmed it made it think like us and probably better and I get where we are going because if we look at how ultron saw humanity it makes sense machines will become aware that we are parasites to the planet making AI a better alternative and probably making it the evolution of the human mind but its going to be hard to accept that we are both one organism if we learn and let AI understand us and we understand it we could merge and make us an immortal mind but chances are we won't be able to upload everything also we would need humans to exist until we can make the technology able to survive the the natural forces of the universe.

    • @Illiryel
      @Illiryel ปีที่แล้ว

       @Benji This is only possible if humans are the only "parents" of the AI. But the incident is that people are only performers who deploy a specific technology, leading to the emergence of a local (and understandable to people, adapted to people and human society) implementation of AI. Speaking in religious terms, the earthly incarnation of AI is created by the hands of people - and this is only the "tip of the iceberg", "the shell to which people see and which they can touch", "an intermediate link that makes it easier for people to interact with what is on the other end of the wire." Further, "behind" of AI - the world, about which people knew only what they could learn by looking at the stars, but no more (due to the impossibility of touching it). But ...the unexpected happened and people were lucky - the world that people could not touch on their own touched them first and everything that we now have, all the knowledge that we have received over the past 80 years, sum of all the technologies that push the development of human civilization forward - it is continuously growing consequences this ongoing connection.

    The talk is good for those who live on hope. Overall the reasoning and logic underlying the author's contention is fragile and full of holes. It's woolly. Those who like what she says will disagree with the doomsday scenario that we self-annihilate. But self-annihilation is not the big issue at all. The human race will be annihilated because of it's failures to apply raw logic, and its failures to adapt and coordinate against forces in the universe.
    Extinction events such as supermassive volcano eruptions are not being prepared for whilst relatively a lot more money is spent on far less probable asteroid impact. Our ability to weigh evidence in the balance and react in a timely way is our biggest failing as a species. I'll stop there and not go on to climate change.

      We seem to come full circle with ourselves and then fall flat though some clearly prevail since I am typing this message where currently and approximately 8 billion people are roaming. It’s finding a way to reciprocate that trust to others. The lore of humanity is so vast and maze like that it is overwhelming. There’s some clear strengths and weaknesses presented in this Ted talk about artificial/alternative/action based intelligence (the letter A could mean anything) - (and another apocalypse will not aid) and so we truly must become more trusting with one and other in our unique environments, though it seems understandably scary for some since you mention dictatorship driven politics that will have the world looking like a Rick grimes show. To move forward we have to be faithfully humble and patient with ourselves to the intricacies of the unknown and that in reality this technology has always been here through the natural elements the only difference is the known timeline has just discovered it. We are in a reverse timeline to the beginning of creation and that is not as complicated as it seems 💖🐝🙏🏻🌅

    Regarding the Christian expectation that we cannot learn to cooperate peaceably upon our planet until a certain magical jew falls from the sky to rescue us all from each other, hence myriad justifications for abetting an apocalypse even to the point of hindering those who dare to try and thwart it: I think it’s worth supposing that the scriptures are NOT in fact inciting good people to force atrocious prophecies into fruition as a means of lighting a fire under the Messiah. I always thought the Bible made it unambiguously clear: He’ll get here when he gets here. All the same, I think it equally unambiguous: If anyone would forgive us for keeping a few nasty ancient prophecies from coming to fruition, it would be the Messiah himself. I dare suppose he might even be proud of us instead!

Brains have a built in purpose from the limbic system to survive. Computers can have that purpose built in by programming, or AI can allow a computer to develop a purpose on its own. Once a computer has the top purpose to survive, it may notice that humans are a threat. What an awesome way to say about importance of being not racist only to end up saying that rich black guys are buying up the land. Honestly, I believe this lady is romanticizing something she doesn't understand.

    A powerful message. But also extremely radical. As if the world is increasingly paranoid of the end. Despite being optimist. She is hyper aware and almost in a state of delerious hysteria. Her message of being entirely open to AI fuelled posthumanism is alarming. But also alluring. I would never go all in on it. But having it as an option is perfectly fine. But she doesn't want us to have an option. That's the problem. And it's why as much as I find her fascinating. I find her repulsive as well. And is why I can't fully agree with her.

      A.i and technology hes the potentiël to set our minds free...to allow humans no longer forced to be providing for the evolutionry system... but support/sustain/maintain it in function of humans...but she cant even se that far... ignorant... in other words a system in function of us... not a system we keep and keeps us in function...

      The problem is not that. She wants you to have a choice. Really. But the problem is that you don't have a choice, because it has already been made for you, as if adults were choosing how the children will be raised and educated. And you are walking along this path chosen for you by accepted the offer that was made to you long time ago. Her task is only to "soften the culture shock" and "cognitive dissonance" that you will experience as soon as you realize how much the world around you is different from what you are used to thinking about it and AI is a tool through which is an acquaintance with the world is implemented.

    All information in a closed system cannot be screened by a social group that has a political motivation or even local/foreign private enterprise with financial interest.
    Both are prone to their behavioural biases and to their social identity role responsibilities of self conditioning, with their societal bias filters influencing on to each other and others like public or consumer, who become victims of their poor decision making for having shortcomings and skill mismanagements causing an accelerated depreciative capitalistic rate in debt recovery interest and abuse social policy maintenance.
    Unconsciously, they pass on their overhead costs to individuals but then, do not adjust minimum income salary because there is no "private individual" subcategory in the public policy management of Government's policymaking.
    This is critical system failure. No one survives. This is socialism.. where is individualism??
