Big difference between west of the mountains and east of the mountains. And I can’t wait for the rainy season to end.

Short overnight camping adventures are good too.
I always consider those spots that are not really anywhere....
    It often beats driving more.
Highway sounds as background noise is in a way reassuring.
Its much better than thick woods with odd sounds all night.

Yep, that’s a typical free campground in Washington. I’ve learned that most of those places aren’t really a destination, just a place to sleep. Some of the national forest campgrounds are free in the offseason. I’ve had better luck with those.

I have been in that area. The landscape is interesting if you know a little of the Quaternary geology. A great stop just west of there is the Vantage area on the west side of the Columbia. The Ginkgo petrified forest has some very interesting trails. Personally if I wanted to stop on the way back from Pullman (not that I have ever wanted to go to Pullman - I am a UW man after all), I would have gone a bit farther from I-90 and stopped at Dry Falls/Sun Lakes State Park. There is a good deal of hiking there and the landscape is much more spectacular. Yeah, it is a bit off the route, but well worth the 30-40 minute drive.

Oh, wow, nice to know about the discover pass, it looks like a great deal even for a week's vacation. It looks like it covers entry into state parks (For day use only, camping's separate?) and free camping at the DNR campgrounds if you can get a site -- do I have that right?
Probably a good thing you were at that one on a cold, rainy day, looks like that spot gets pretty rowdy when the weather's better!

Was that orange and gold object on the ground an empty shell casing from a rifle? The sign you took a video of looked like it was riddled with bullet holes. Seeing those things would have raised my concern about how safe it is to camp at that site. Was there any concern by you for your safety or did you have any concern that there could be rowdy people coming onto the campground at night and disturb the peace and quiet in the night? Glad you enjoyed you camping.
