The Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget

In 2019, the London Mint Office launched an appeal to find the UK descendants of John Deason and Richard Oates, the Cornish miners who discovered the largest gold nugget ever discovered in Australia in 1869.
In May 2019 representatives of the two families met under the statue of their famous relatives in Cornwall Gold, Redruth. BBC Cornwall were there to interview Justin Robinson, Historian at the London Mint Office, and Rachel Little, Marketing Manager at Cornwall Gold.
The London Mint Office presented a beautiful gold coin, struck in proof quality by the Perth Mint to the people of Redruth to mark the 150th Anniversary of the discovery. It was received by the town's mayor Deborah Reeve.
