I recorded this on videotape in the 1970s, and when I was at university (late 70s-early 80s), it was the basis for many an opera party! We all ogled Anna Moffo (who was the host of the PBS airing), drank vodka shots whenever they drank vodka shots, and drank champagne whenever they drank champagne. Our goal was...to see if we could all stay awake until the very end! Of course, we also had chicken on the grill, and usually burned our fingers, trying to pick up the pieces. Fun times, with good friends, and this video holds a very important honor, in my memories. Thanks for sharing.

I have to contradict: Although he is an amazing actor and singer he is way too old for this role. The Prince is supposed to be a young and spoiled aristocrat who is constantly bored despite all of his money. Seeing an old man playing that part makes me think he is bored because he has seen it all in his long life.
I know this is highly individual but in my opinion Brigitte Fassbaender did a much better and way more convincing job. Not only is her voice better suited for a young man, almost still a boy, but she was performing way more energetic and convinving. Especially the accent :)

    • @michsturge671
      @michsturge671 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Red80008I've never read any reference to Orlofsky's age in any score or libretto but I imagine Fassbaender would be convincing. My problem is that most female Orlofskys treat the role in an overly foppish fashion.

Herur22 thank-you. I saw same production different cast, but it was getting really getting ragged and old. It was so bad that the prompter threw the score at the cast because they couldn't remember their lines. There was complete breakdown where people just stood around and stared at each other. Just deadly boring. So next year they brought in Domingo as conductor because public and critics were yelling that Domingo didn't know anything about conducting and tenors aren't conductors-- So this was like rude gift to Domingo. Same old production and Domingo expected to be just like donkey pulling plough in field--an ass for critics. Domingo came, he made cuts, he imposed discipline and he had very good performances--
After that critics quite yapping about Domingo as incompetent. But WienerStaatsOrchestra-- god, what a rat's nest. You couldn't hear the singers because the members of orchestra were talking so loud and moving their stools around and playing cards and going in and out... Just completely unacceptable behavior that would never be allowed in the US. I was really shocked. And then I understood why Wiener Staatsoper couldn't get a long term contract with a conductor. Really disgusting behavior.

Mary C Legg OMG, was it really that bad? That's terrible. I thought that the Wiener Staatsoper was a serious institution. Was that performance where Domingo was conducting the one with Prey and Kiri Te Kanava? I saw that perfomance (not in theatre) and I found it quite charming.

Herur22 I can look in program, but it was past 100 performances and when I asked my teacher about it, she told me it was disastrous and actually created huge uproar because it was so bad. If the orchestra is so damn loud moving chairs and talking that you can't hear the singers, it's really bad. So Domingo got the job of the nest year's Fledermaus which was then only Silverster and NYD. And every newspaper went after him and ridiculed him and ripped him to shreds that he could never conduct and blah-blah, so hence reason why he got the champagne opera. Herr DIr Drese knew what he was doing. Domingo came in and he cleaned it up, kicked the orchestra, made the jokes funny and really made the performance snap. It was still the same old set, but it was completely different performance on stage. It was really huge turnaround. It was the winter he had pneumonia and sang outside the Rathaus in the snow as benefit concert. I think it was same year. My autograph books and music were stolen, so I cna't easily check it.
He lost his family in the terrible Mexican quake and nobody thought he would ever sing again. So he just couldn't rest. He had crazy hectic schedule and despite being really ill, he was standing out there in snow singing for anybody who wlked by Rathaus. I forgot what else he conducted because he then came back and did some Wagner conducting I think-- and then the incredible Lohrengrin and Parsifal. Domingo, such a man of courage.
When Drese got chucked out by politics-which was huge shame-- and Holender in, Domingo and about 5 other singers dropped their contracts as Holender was really abusive to singers and actually they had contracts with Drese. Holender was really horrible agent to sing for, but he's still in the Staastoper I think. I think his first year, he had 20+ performances of Parsifal--s if anybody needed that many.
Holender-- god knows how he got that job-just politics. have no loving memories of him or his office. Rude, arrogant...whatever. Old Raab, yes. Young Raab, yes. I was foolish not to return to them and ask them for help. I didn't know how to ask. They wanted me and i should have realized that eally they would have helped me. that's what good agents are about.

IncredibleGoliath yes, it rather makes TH-cam a horrible place to visit. You really have to wonder about 80-85% people posting--they couldn't sing for the life of them, but they're very good at ripping and being pretentious. It's normal.

Distribuer Orlofsky à un est aussi stupide que si on faisait la même chose pour Cherubino ou Oktavian...
Cela tue toute l'ambigüité du personnage.

At the end of second act you can often find different gems (arias, songs, dances, concerts) from the classic repertoire, which itself are not part of the show.

Janowitz is a fabulous Rosalinde, there is none better. Too often the role is sung by a soprano near the end of her career ending badly.

@@aliena2979 then the role and character of Rosalinde as such must be boring to you. However, Janowitz is an extremely good Rosalinde - her dialoge and acting subtlety funny and witty, no less than brilliant. No irritating overacting like so
many find hard to resist - perhaps because a lot of people find anything else boring?

I wonder if this production implies that Falke is attracted to Eisenstein? In my experience it is somewhat unusual for a straight male to stroke the inner side of his straight friends thigh as Falke is doing on 25:17, for instance, and also the way Falke keeps stroking the hair of Eisenstein at the very end of the opera. Mind you, it strikes me as quite interesting - and would also help explain why Falke is so angry about what seems like a fairly innocent joke. But I am probably over-interpreting.
