Hey everyone 👋🏻. I posted an Instagram story today showing behind-the-scenes of the videos I make like this. If you're seeing this past the next 24 hours go to my profile & look for the story titled "Film". Thanks for watching! instagram.com/mattdavella
We live in a materialistic society best thing I've done in my life was traveling to the Philippines the people I met had no money but they where all so happy and welcoming to me and it made me realise what a dog eat dog my country is in Australia people living in Competion all I want is to have my peace of mind
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Im 67 and retired in 2016. Since that time, I’ve adopted a plant based diet, started working out, got into meditation, and became a minimalist after watching your fabulous documentary. Much thanks to you and just love your podcasts - you’re awesome!
I became a minimalist when I went the Philippines and realized everyone was happy even tho they had little. I told myself if they can be happy with less than I can too. When I got home, I started getting rid of stuff and minimalism began for me.
Hi Matt, I love your quote "When I closed my eyes, when I imagined what success would look like to me in the future, it was no longer a big house, a nice car, fancy things, the white picket fence. I saw me doing work I loved, I was sharing time with family and friends, I was contributing, and I was making an impact" I'm pretty young and this quote sums up how I want my future successes in life to be measured off of. Minimalism created a new life path and I look forward to the road less travelled! FYI your TH-cam videos are INCREDIBLE. Please keep up the great work!
I stumbled across the documentary on Netflix in the beginning of 2018. Then I discovered the minimalist channels on TH-cam. That's how I found you Matt. My life has drastically changed since. Thank you.
I’ve been binging these videos all week whenever I’ve had a spare moment, and it took me until watching *this* video to understand why. This channel is exactly what I needed to see at this moment in my life. I’m someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression and general dissatisfaction for nearly all of my time on this earth; all of the times I’ve felt the least unhappy and the most fulfilled were when I could see clearly who I was and where I was going. This summer, I cleaned my room (like- cleaned it, cleaned it; i probably made Marie Kondo proud), donated a bunch of stuff and organized what was left, and that was the clearest my head had felt in 19 years. I thought, “oh man I wish I could do this with everything.” And then I went back to school in the fall and I fell into the same rat race. Juggling dozens of ideas and assignments and deadlines and stuff not only in my head, but in my physical space. There was just ~too much~. It kept me from thinking clearly, and I felt so much all of the time that my emotions box (not for the first time) blew a fuse and I just gave up. I scraped by in class, I stumbled through exams, and finally, finally, I came across this channel in one of my late night binges of movies and TH-cam videos. I was like “oh he’s a minimalist, that’s super cool.” Not realizing that, as I would slowly pick my way through the channel, that is the life that my mind has been calling me to live since it got a taste of it this past summer. I’m so excited to implement minimalism- or essentialism- into areas of my life that desperately crave it. I have a feeling this could be my turning point; not just physically and mentally, but creatively as well. Thank you so much, Matt. I can confidently say that you’ve actually changed my life.
I’m learning so much from you Matt, love these short stories you’re creating. I have no idea how you get these done in one shot, but I’m tempted to give these a try. I thought Minimalism was a fantastic documentary, my wife and I watched it a week ago and we've talked about a different aspect of it every day since. I’ve recommended it to my friends. You’re having an impact and changing lives even on the other side of the world. Take care mate! 👍
I watched the documentary and it blew my mind! I didn’t know minimalism was a thing. Everything started to make sense to me! Every time I came home I felt so anxious and stress and I didn’t know why. Watching it changed my life and the way I pensive things now. I immediately started getting rid of my stuff and I feel happier. I have been 3 weeks into minimalism and I don’t see myself going back. I’m loving my new life style.
This documentary helped me see what ive actually doing my entire life: waste time thinking in things that i dont need to. Past a year without buy some things and was wonderful.
+Redeemed the issue at question here is.. what is "clutter"? to your average Tibetan monk, your life is hopelessly cluttered, you have many clothes, you have an insanely varied diet, you have computers and Internet and shoes and electricity and running water. Minimalism is something like Amish living, basically a rejection of commercialism and a life based mostly on meditation, prayer and living off the land. When someone on the Internet says he is a "minimalist", he is in fact practicing "selective hoarding" - he actually DECIDES what he chooses to clutter his life with. True minimalism is totally getting rid of desire - not many people can achieve that, and certainly no one actually on the Internet. No one on the Internet is actually a minimalist by virtue of the fact that they are on the Internet, with a phone and/or a computer and Internet access - that in itself is already clutter.
@@smissions7340 Minimalism is living with items in respect to what the individual considers essential to his or her life. Your last paragraph is more likely the definition of asceticism, which is living devoid of all materials.
Became a minimalist a year ago and never felt so content & less stress in my life. Got rid of so much clutter and stopped shopping for unnecessary things no matter how good the deal sounds.
Respect to you brother! Thanks for sharing... here’s a quote that came to mind: “Happiness is not a goal...it’s a by-product of a life well lived.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
Hi, Matt! Thanks so much for sharing this. I love that story about the film director and you’re aha realization that saying no is an option. I’m doing that just now, not only culling my physical things, but allowing a job to come to an end instead of upping the hours, and moving to a new place and releasing a volunteer position I have held. I don’t have to keep doing things just because they’re good and people expect me to. Swimming in new directions…
I stumbled on your content yesterday at 4am. I couldn't sleep. I hit the 'subscribe' icon cos I knew straight away this could change my thought process. It's currently 3.30am in London. I'm on holiday from work, so Im watching endless videos, as you do, on TH-cam. From Tomorrow, Im going to begin my new minimalistic life. And I can't wait
I haven't finished it yet but I just want to say I really appreciate your stylish, funny and down-to-earth style of videos! It's a fresh of breath air to watch them and definitely inspiring.
They are wacky not you. What you do is your business not theiirs. Do not live up to the expectations of others - family, friends and neighbours. Kind greetings from Switzerland.
One month ago, I found your no sugar video and since that I started to watch the rest of your videos and couldn't agree more, right now you are the influence I needed, thank you
YOU definitely changed my life. Becoming a minimalist has made me a lot happier and I do not have to waste too much time on keeping track of unnecessary things. This gives me more time to be more proactive on things and projects that really matter.
😁 I'd probably do the same. That much money would make me feel I'd never have to worry about my income for the rest of my life. It's true that I'd spend very little of it, but then I'd pass on what's left to the next generation.
I think the difference is Dave was already a multimillionaire when he received that offer. As Matt has pointed out in previous videos, after a certain point more money doesn't increase how happy you are.
Being a soon-to-be college graduate following an imaginative future, this really hits home and truly inspires me to become more in tune with my aspirations. Thanks for this.
I found the minimalist doco late one night because i was stressing about what my next step was. Fast forward 12 months and my values and pathway is so much clearer to me. I don’t have it all figured out but making some solid changes has definitely put things in perspective and now i am enjoying the journey not stressing over it. Thank you so much
Cool story! Didn't quite have that much student debt, but I went to minimalism because I wanted to become financially free by 28 and I knew consumption was the first thing that had to go. I did allow myself to splurge on one hobby of mine. For me it was surfing. So I allowed me to spend money only on surf gear and trips. Everything else went to zero. I was living in a $650k condo with almost nothing inside of it and sleeping in the walk-in closet :)
I had a job at a start up that was a decent income, but I was able to setup my position where I worked 5-10 hrs a week. That allowed me to take on other projects and investments in real estate and the stock market.
Haha yeah. Being single and not having kids can be freeing. ;) It's hard to stay in a relationship when you have extreme financial goals. Kudos to you for being able to find that balance. Something I still need to learn how to do. Yeah, not having a mortgage is the key. It's even better if the property produces income. :)
I really enjoy listening to you and watching your channel. I think changing our perspective on "wealth" is a game changer. I too always wanted a bigger house, now with more people and dogs I could easily downsize and our house is already on the smaller side. I go out in California and I'm saddened by all the people focused on screens that used to make eye contact and enjoy smiling, waving at or saying hello to each other. Yes, changing our perspective is vital.
I've just watched the minimalist documentary, and...it totally change my points of views !! I love this philosophy and lifestyle, and I just realize that my life used to be so...empty. Sad. And right now , I'm traying to follow each step of minimalist slowly and introduce to my life, and I'm feeling great again , Thank you so much, greetings from Mexico.
Wow, I never heard anyone else tell a story like this. For me, it was literally 40 years ago at St. Michael's College that Father Madden had a class on "minimalist" Henry David Thoreau's book Walden. Something in me CLICKED. I have been a "monk" and a poet ever since. Thanks for sharing that PROFOUND CLICK MOMENT. And the love, freedom and joy of the spirit it can offer.
Thanks for sharing this and all that you do Matt. What you felt when watching last call with Carson daly is what I felt when I saw your documentary Minimalism. I've changed my entire career path because of it and Im the happiest that I've ever been.
I think your videos are some of my favorites here on TH-cam! They are so well made, intentional and straight to the point and really relaxing to watch!
So true. In life we're constantly being sold this idea that success, money and material things will bring us happiness when in reality, it's a completely different story. I've realized lately that Buddhism revolves around this a lot - the value of letting go of external gratification and finding happiness from within, and I'm currently trying to be conscious about that fact. Awesome video as always Matt!
Didn't have issues giving things away. Then, I saw, different "Hoarders' stories" I felt compassion for them, though I couldn't do anything about their journey. Thought, nope that's not for me, and began to purposefully getting rid of stuff, that we didn't need or use. My family began to donate "just stuff " they didn't want, and that had been stored away for more than a couple of years, amazingly enough. Even the photos that were still in those store envelopes. What photos were kept were chosen by whomever wanted it/them, all others were put in recycling. The journey continues, but with much less to worry about. For friends and family that are still accumulating I just quietly bless them and release, they have their own path to follow. Thank you for your post.
It's amazing how you put into words the things that you feel. For months, I've been looking for those words and now, I'm glad I found them. This video is truly inspiring. Thank you.
Thankyou for not doing that thing where people stitch together a billion scenes into a 5-minute segment because they can't speak clearly or are self-conscious or something.... I love the clarity and simplicity of your videos.
You have the best voice. And your videos are really making me rethink a lot of things in my life. I don’t think I’d ever be completely minimalist but I can adapt a lot of this and most especially the mindset into my life.
The phrase "sooner than later" always reminds me that life is cyclical and there are lessons to be learned. The more aware we become of this "sooner than later", the better the life we can create for our selves will be.
Director of those movies and the star of those movies both began to look inwards. Interesting, excellent video as always Matt. Thank you for your content and a glimpse into your mind.
You dont see as much momentum behind minimalism at the moment but its such a powerful tool! I am working 30 hrs a week and will have my house paid off in 6 years!
My parents have been doing this for decades and it thankfully engrained in my personal way of life. It’s a choice to live simple and to not be enslaved by consumerism and the high expectations of the society around you. One thing though is that’s it’s harder to explain why you’re a minimalist than to just go in debt and buy that shiny new car.
Hey Matt i just found your channel today and i have to say it blows my mind how in one day i have already got rid of so much stuff. you have made me think of my life i a way i never even thought of. thanks dude and keep up with the awesome content. P.S cant wait for the rock to come on your pod case someday.
In Latvia we have a proverb: One is rich who has enough. It means that even if you are billionare but still have this feeling you are lacking something and still go for even more money - than you are poor not rich. Rich is one who has enough.
Omg, I just started.. it's my fourth day so I'm still kind of new to this. I read the description u directed the minimalist in netflix. I just watched it earlier!! thank you guys!!!
Thank you for the impact your videos had on my way of thinking and living. I'm a teenager and obviously still live with my parents and I'm trying to change their mind about stuff too
Just found you recently and am binge watching your videos... absolutely love you! Thanks for helping me change my perception and getting me excited about minimalism and what's important. ❤
Yes Tom Shadyac’s life was very inspiring to me as well and came at a time when I was two years into my 7-figure Income. That was 10 years ago. Divorced from all of it and “simplistic-life” (minimalist) as I call it is what truly resonates with me for years now. More rewarding and fulfilling. Thanks for the awesome videos you produce.
Thank you for making this video!! My wife and I became minimialists after watching the documentary a year ago and we are exponentially happier ever since! If only I can work out how to minimise my desire for convenience food... 🤦🏼♂️💁🏼♂️
Minimalism does not mean you can't own good things; it just means that what you own supports your purpose in life so that your life is not cluttered with junk. It is the opposite of consumerism.
Gosh some people are even hoarders with their tongues... didn’t your mama ever teach you “ if you don’t have anything nicr to say... DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL”.... love your movie and love your advice I’ve instinctively have been minimalist since the 80s and I have been labeled crazy as well (but minimalism in terms of big things houses cars etc... only since your movie have I started the physical interior decluttering it’s a process... thank you for your work and advice!
Accidentaly came across your videos. I completly understand that feeling because that impact have had your videos on me. But my story is little diferent. I was raised in loving but kind of minimalist family. We always emphasized immaterial thing like quality time with each other more than buying stuff. After boom of social media and high school and college friends were always like buy, spend more money, buy expensive car. I have been telling them that I only need solid four wheels that will drive me from point A to point B. They were telling me that I have no money to afford car or that I dont understand anything. But that wasn t true. I just wanted to spend money on things that mattered to me like travel or some other joy. This gave me hope that someone else today thinks similar. PS I also like Pourover coffee.
My whole family lives on having objects and possessions as part of them, whether that would be keepsakes or things passed down from our family. Since about 12, I started getting rid of things that no longer brought use to me. Things like childhood drawings or toys or just things that were so called meaningful to everyone else. My parents thought I was trying to escape from things as I grew into my teen years. But I always saw it as, why have all these possessions if none of them came to use to you anymore? Why hoard and hold on? I was so tired of myself and others buying and shopping and looking for more things when we all had these things. I never wanted to be materialistic or to have those things provide some emotional support. To me, relationships and adventures and just memories bring so much more than something I could buy.
The only thing I chose to 'collect' and buy more of is tattoos. They are a placeholder of some memories and feelings for me while also being something I can take with me for my entire life. Like taking a lifetime full of memories with me
Keep up the good work, love the filmmaking/tech videos blended with the lifestyle improvement educational videos spiced up with the entertainment :) And also when the content is always good, it's impossible not to enjoy it :)
Go to estate sales on weekends. Its kind of funny how when someone dies, their kids just sell all the crap they have been collecting for years and years. It all looks the same too.
Really enjoying the stuff you've been putting out lately Matt, keep up the good work! thanks for sharing the BTS as well, that's a super clean setup you have. I'm guessing that's a daylight bulb you have inside the paper lantern? it works great!

“Detachment is not that you own nothing. Detachment is nothing owns you.“ :)
Thank you so much for that. That was just incredible.
So true!
That's so deep, but in a good way

probably ripped it off FightClub, slightly.

Big respect Terry, that's inspiring to see being able to keep growing as human, regardless of the age restrictions that society silently puts on us
Impressed and inspired.
Terry Magram very inspiring! I'm plant based too!
+1 to the vgang :)
Wow, I’ve arrived! 40 likes on a comment - that’s 40 more than I’ve ever gotten, lol!
Isn't life ironic. "minimalist": having less, but the beginning of finding more in life
Nowadays everyone sits around and watches a screen all day and have no courage to change anything around them.
+88rising I suppose that's minimalism too in a way :)
More success, less things
Less is more
indeed. Finding yourself, after being buried under piles of stuff.
*That moment was profound for you. This video was profound for me. Thank you.* 🦋

Came here after watching your video "I am on my own again." And this video is why I subscribed to you. Make more of such content please.
Trying my best. To become. A minimalist. This is so hard. Will not give up. Your videos are helping me.
Bro, you are certainly creating an impact... keep going
I am on this path now and it's so freeing. Some people think I am crazy but I finally feel free!
“I Am” is one of my favorite documentaries.
Lillian Briggs I loved how Tom Shadyac was before the "trend" of it. I remember when Oprah interviewed him
you don't need a late night show on tv Matt you already made an impact to me by this.
I’m glad you shared your story. I was thinking that you decided to become a minimalist after meeting Josh and Ryan.
Hi Matt D'Avella I'm very grateful for your videos cause I'm changing my thinking cause of those videos
I've watched a couple of videos in this channel, but this one really spoke to me. I'm really considering living a minimal lifestyle.
im new here! but im sooo obbbsesss with your content !! simple. thats what my life is all about, simplicity
I love this. I have been thinking about becoming a minimalist for a couple years. I’m still in the beginning stages.
Minimalism has been fascinating me lately! Thank you so much for sharing!
A minimalist video about minimalism. This guy got it!
Director of those movies and the star of those movies both began to look inwards. Interesting, excellent video as always Matt. Thank you for your content and a glimpse into your mind.
I absolutely love the look of your videos, I come back time after time just for the pure aesthetic
You dont see as much momentum behind minimalism at the moment but its such a powerful tool! I am working 30 hrs a week and will have my house paid off in 6 years!
Good video. The moment we stop attaching our happiness to “things”, life makes much more sense.
And now youre changing our lives!! thanks for this video, and thanks for your time
I find myself saying "yes"multiple times while watching this video. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSPIRATION!
One thing I really like on your videos is that you take one long shot when filming.
I met Tom when I was 15. He did a show at CSU and my boys and girls club got to meet him. I remember him telling the same story
Loooooved that film too. Return to it from time to time.
Love this, it changed my life, it took some time but I feel so good I love it, we should spread this culture, it would make the world a better place
In Latvia we have a proverb: One is rich who has enough. It means that even if you are billionare but still have this feeling you are lacking something and still go for even more money - than you are poor not rich. Rich is one who has enough.
You’ve changed the way I see things in life I’ve watched almost all your videos looking forward to more
That's awesome, really touched by your simple words and explanation. Thanks Matt!
I really love your videos, Matt. They really work on me. And I love the idea that live should be giving good impact on others.
Omg, I just started.. it's my fourth day so I'm still kind of new to this. I read the description u directed the minimalist in netflix. I just watched it earlier!! thank you guys!!!
Thank you for the impact your videos had on my way of thinking and living. I'm a teenager and obviously still live with my parents and I'm trying to change their mind about stuff too
Snap. I saw 'I am' and it changed me. Minimalism is one of the best things ive ever done. Thanks for the video.
I call myself a “reductionist”. I am on the path but I have not arrived yet. Great simple and well articulated video.
Just found you recently and am binge watching your videos... absolutely love you! Thanks for helping me change my perception and getting me excited about minimalism and what's important. ❤
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND THEIR MESSAGE!!! Bless you!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Like taking a lifetime full of memories with me
Man, that was really beautiful and inspiring! Thank you for everything.
This feels very genuine
Thanks for sharing Matt! It's nice to see the channel finally start to grow and more people discover how good your content is, Keep up the good work!
Thanks for being around since the beginning 👊🏻
Keep up the good work, love the filmmaking/tech videos blended with the lifestyle improvement educational videos spiced up with the entertainment :)
And also when the content is always good, it's impossible not to enjoy it :)
Go to estate sales on weekends. Its kind of funny how when someone dies, their kids just sell all the crap they have been collecting for years and years. It all looks the same too.
Wow this is good ❤
Really enjoying the stuff you've been putting out lately Matt, keep up the good work! thanks for sharing the BTS as well, that's a super clean setup you have. I'm guessing that's a daylight bulb you have inside the paper lantern? it works great!
This video is the idea I needed. Thank you!
Happy for you!! Keep going.
I LOVE this video of yours. It's one of my FAVORITES.
love and appreciate your sincerity, I felt it in the way you talk.
