I’d love to hear about the sustainability of their collections and the actual impact of their collections on the native habitats.
While it is super cool to see that they breed some species they obviously take A LOT of fish from the wild for captivity.
I was thinking the same thing. They are taking these creatures from a huge environment and putting them in tanks. I dont understand that.
Same issue for me. I understand captive breeding for preservation and whatnot but something about taking them out of the wild just really bothers me. You'd think by now we would have like, every species available for captive breeding because they've already been captured in the past before we knew better

@@laurieb3703 They’re not doing that to every animal. It seems they have in-house breeding facilities for the more popular stuff including corals. It does seem that they’re taking the more exotic animals out of the wild, but it should be going to educational institutions such as public aquariums (there are plenty of laws regarding the export/import of live protected animals everywhere). The awareness that’ll they’ll produce will by far outweigh the environmental impact of taking them out of their habitats.

Everything is wild caught.
I believe he discusses this in the previous video on Cairns Marine (although that regarding coral, the same essentially applies to fish). Australia has very strict regulations around collecting, which is great.

Kind of a small tank for a grouper 😐 so they just take fish from the wild and sell them? Seems a bit unethical. I know salt water fish are harder to breed but still. Love her enthusiasm though. You can tell she loves her job

This facility looks great! I’m just wondering if they’re providing enough space to ethically keep fish. The minimum tank size to keep a clownfish in is 20 gallons, and the clownfish in this video were definitely not in 20 gallon tanks. Not trying to hate at all, I’m just curious!
Thank you! I was wondering the same thing but I didn’t know how to word it without seeming like a jerk. You worded it perfectly. I hope they’re not in those tanks for too long. Hopefully they’re just there until they go to their forever home/aquarium/wherever. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.
To be honest, most of these holding facilities have fish in small tanks, at the very least, its quite good that they're very on top of their filtration type stuff and the fish all seem in great health, even got the sharks breeding etc, so I'd say its kind of a necessary evil for the industry, it can be MUCH worse
The idea of "20 gallon tank" is to make sure there is enough water to handle things like oxygen, nitrate, ammonia, etc. levels, not for swimming space for this fish. Other fish, as you can see in the video may have larger tanks, more bubbles (oxygen), rocks/tubes to hide in, etc to accommodate the needs of the fish. The space for the clown fish isn't an issue. The clown fish you saw in the smaller space is part of a water system that is likely hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water and therefore more than enough to handle the clown fish
well, this is a holding/export facility, so they are not going to keep them for too long, only temporairly, and it seems they keep their tanks in a good condition so the fish are healthy.
From what i've seen most export facilities use small tanks, cause they need to cut cost though, but yeah its only temporary so the small tanks should be no problem

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this. They take good care of them and all but they take so many creatures from the wild just to then be put in tanks. I feel so sad that they have to be taken from their homes, and for us.

I might be wrong but i assumed all of those tanks are temporary housing and basically just comfortable holding tanks for until they get purchased. You can see with the one tank with the trees that any animals they are actually permanently keeping are in actual well kept tanks. And she specifically said they where all sectioned so they don’t get stressed out. This looks like the complete opposite of animal cruelty imo 🤷🏻♀️

Anyone else uncomfortable with the fact that they where “collected” rather then captive breed, like isn’t that one of the reasons the reefs are dieting out

No most saltwater fish are very hard to breed due to unique requirements also they are harvested in a safe way the main reason reefs are dying is coral bleaching due to climate change
Australia has very very strict rules regarding wild caught fish/inverts/coral, and I'd assume they're working really hard on GBR restoration and public education on top of their animal management, as they specialize in GBR fish.
The Great Barrier Reef needs to be protected and saved, not plundered for profit. This was a sad video.

I have lived in Darwin all my life and have not once seen a emo memo. I cannot believe they are native here. But in saying that, the water is croc invested and you cannot see more than 1 metre down because the water is so dirty. So cool what you learn!!!
